Book excerpt: The book lays algebraic foundations for real geometry through a systematic investigation of partially ordered rings of semi-algebraic functions. Real spectra serve as primary geometric objects, the maps between them are determined by rings of functions associated with the spectra. The many different possible choices for these rings of functions are studied via reflections of partially ordered rings. Readers should feel comfortable using basic algebraic and categorical concepts. As motivational background some familiarity with real geometry will be helpful. The book aims at researchers and graduate students with an interest in real algebra and geometry, ordered algebraic structures, topology and rings of continuous functions.

Together, these give an overview of some recent advances in the area of ordered algebraic structures. The first part of the book is devoted to ordered permutation groups and universal, as well as model-theoretic, aspects. The second part deals with material variously connected to general topology and functional analysis. Collectively, the contents of the book demonstrate the wide applicability of order-theoretic methods, and how ordered algebraic structures have connections with many research disciplines. For researchers and graduate students whose work involves ordered algebraic structures.

Book excerpt: The conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures held in Curat;ao, from the 26th of June through the 30th of June, 1995, at the Avila Beach Hotel, marked the eighth year of ac tivities by the Caribbean Mathematics Foundation (abbr. CMF), which was the principal sponsor of this conference. CMF was inaugurated in 1988 with a conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures. During the years between these two conferences the field has changed sufficiently, both from my point of view and, I believe, that of my co-organizer, W. Charles Holland, to make one wonder about the label "Ordered Algebraic Structures" itself. We recognized this from the start, and right away this conference carried a subtitle, or, if one prefers, an agenda: we concentrated on the one hand, on traditional themes in the theory of ordered groups, including model-theoretic aspects, and, on the other hand, on matters in which topology (more precisely C(X)-style topology) and category theory would play a prominent role. Plainly, ordered algebra has many faces, and it is becoming increas ingly difficult to organize an intimate conference, such as the ones encouraged in the series sponsored by CMF, in this area on a broad set of themes. These proceedings reflect, accurately we think, the spirit of the conferees, but it is not a faithful record of the papers presented at the conference.

Book excerpt: From September 1970 through May 1971 Tulane University organized a special year long program in the theory of noncommutative rings and operator algebras. Visitors from various institutions of the U.S.A. and abroad contributed to a series of lectures in which they covered recent advances in their own field of specialty. These notes contain these lectures to the extent that they have not appeared elsewhere. This volume presents the lectures on applications of topology to ring theory, through the representation of rings by sections in sheaves.

Book excerpt: This indispensable reference source contains a wealth of information on lattice theory. The book presents a survey of virtually everything published in the fields of partially ordered sets, semilattices, lattices, and Boolean algebras that was reviewed in Referativnyi Zhurnal Matematika from mid-1982 to the end of 1985. A continuation of a previous volume (the English translation of which was published by the AMS in 1989, as volume 141 in Translations - Series 2), this comprehensive work contains more than 2200 references. Many of the papers covered here were originally published in virtually inaccessible places. The compilation of the volume was directed by Milan Kolibiar of Comenius University at Bratislava and Lev A. Skornyakov of Moscow University. Of interest to mathematicians, as well as to philosophers and computer scientists in certain areas, this unique compendium is a must for any mathematical library.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this unique book is to establish purely algebraic foundations for the development of certain parts of topology. Some topologists seek to understand geometric properties of solutions to finite systems of equations or inequalities and configurations which in some sense actually occur in the real world. Others study spaces constructed more abstractly using infinite limit processes. Their goal is to determine just how similar or different these abstract spaces are from those which are finitely described. However, as topology is usually taught, even the first, more concrete type of problem is approached using the language and methods of the second type. Professor Brumfiel's thesis is that this is unnecessary and, in fact, misleading philosophically. He develops a type of algebra, partially ordered rings, in which it makes sense to talk about solutions of equations and inequalities and to compare geometrically the resulting spaces. The importance of this approach is primarily that it clarifies the sort of geometrical questions one wants to ask and answer about those spaces which might have physical significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory of associative rings and their modules, designed primarily for graduate students. The standard topics on the structure of rings are covered, with a particular emphasis on the concept of the complete ring of quotients. A survey of the fundamental concepts of algebras in the first chapter helps to make the treatment self-contained. The topics covered include selected results on Boolean and other commutative rings, the classical structure theory of associative rings, injective modules, and rings of quotients. The final chapter provides an introduction to homological algebra. Besides three appendices on further results, there is a six-page section of historical comments. Table of Contents: Fundamental Concepts of Algebra: 1.1 Rings and related algebraic systems; 1.2 Subrings, homomorphisms, ideals; 1.3 Modules, direct products, and direct sums; 1.4 Classical isomorphism theorems. Selected Topics on Commutative Rings: 2.1 Prime ideals in commutative rings; 2.2 Prime ideals in special commutative rings; 2.3 The complete ring of quotients of a commutative ring; 2.4 Rings of quotients of commutative semiprime rings; 2.5 Prime ideal spaces.Classical Theory of Associative Rings: 3.1 Primitive rings; 3.2 Radicals; 3.3 Completely reducible modules; 3.4 Completely reducible rings; 3.5 Artinian and Noetherian rings; 3.6 On lifting idempotents; 3.7 Local and semiperfect rings. Injectivity and Related Concepts: 4.1 Projective modules; 4.2 Injective modules; 4.3 The complete ring of quotients; 4.4 Rings of endomorphisms of injective modules; 4.5 Regular rings of quotients; 4.6 Classical rings of quotients; 4.7 The Faith-Utumi theorem. Introduction to Homological Algebra: 5.1 Tensor products of modules; 5.2 Hom and $\otimes$ as functors; 5.3 Exact sequences; 5.4 Flat modules; 5.5 Torsion and extension products. Appendixes; Comments; Bibliography; Index. Review from Zentralblatt Math: Due to their clarity and intelligible presentation, these lectures on rings and modules are a particularly successful introduction to the surrounding circle of ideas. Review from American Mathematical Monthly: An introduction to associative rings and modules which requires of the reader only the mathematical maturity which one would attain in a first-year graduate algebra [course]...in order to make the contents of the book as accessible as possible, the author develops all the fundamentals he will need.In addition to covering the basic topics...the author covers some topics not so readily available to the nonspecialist...the chapters are written to be as independent as possible...[which will be appreciated by] students making their first acquaintance with the subject...one of the most successful features of the book is that it can be read by graduate students with little or no help from a specialist. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to residuated structures, viewed as a common thread binding together algebra and logic. The framework includes well-studied structures from classical abstract algebra such as lattice-ordered groups and ideals of rings, as well as structures serving as algebraic semantics for substructural and other non-classical logics. Crucially, classes of these structures are studied both algebraically, yielding a rich structure theory along the lines of Conrad's program for lattice-ordered groups, and algorithmically, via analytic sequent or hypersequent calculi. These perspectives are related using a natural notion of equivalence for consequence relations that provides a bridge offering benefits to both sides. Algorithmic methods are used to establish properties like decidability, amalgamation, and generation by subclasses, while new insights into logical systems are obtained by studying associated classes of structures. The book is designed to serve the purposes of novices and experts alike. The first three chapters provide a gentle introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters provide a state-of-the-art account of recent developments in the field.

Book excerpt: Determinantal rings and varieties have been a central topic of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Their study has attracted many prominent researchers and has motivated the creation of theories which may now be considered part of general commutative ring theory. The book gives a first coherent treatment of the structure of determinantal rings. The main approach is via the theory of algebras with straightening law. This approach suggest (and is simplified by) the simultaneous treatment of the Schubert subvarieties of Grassmannian. Other methods have not been neglected, however. Principal radical systems are discussed in detail, and one section is devoted to each of invariant and representation theory. While the book is primarily a research monograph, it serves also as a reference source and the reader requires only the basics of commutative algebra together with some supplementary material found in the appendix. The text may be useful for seminars following a course in commutative ring theory since a vast number of notions, results, and techniques can be illustrated significantly by applying them to determinantal rings.
