Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By meshing psychology with literary analysis, this book inspires us to view the reading of fictional works as an emotional and seductive affair between reader and writer. Arguing that current teaching practices have contributed to the current decline in the study of literature, Jean-François Vernay’s plea brings a refreshing perspective by seeking new directions and conceptual tools to highlight the value of literature. Interdisciplinary in focus and relevant to timely discussions of the vitality between emotion and literary studies, particularly within the contexts of psychology, affect studies, and cognitive studies, this book will open up a space in which the formation of our emotions can be openly examined and discussed.

Book excerpt: Analyzes several novels by Albert Cohen (1895-1981) - "Solal", "Mangeclous", "Belle du Seigneur", and "Les Valereux". Cohen, through his heroes, describes crisis and tensions between Jews and non-Jews. In "Solal" the hero is a beautiful and intelligent Jew born on a Greek island, who is accepted into the Gentile society of Paris and Geneva; he becomes a minister and marries a non-Jew. Solal accepts the antisemitic image of the Jews created by the non-Jews and experiences self-hatred. In "Mangeclous" (1938) the heroes use expressions from "La France juive" by Édouard Drumont, reflecting the antisemitic atmosphere in Europe in the late 1930s. Pp. 129-141 discuss the ways in which Cohen, using Drumont's antisemitic expressions, ridicules the antisemitic stereotypical image of the Jew. Notes that Cohen, himself an assimilated Jew, did not try to escape from Jewish themes as did many other Jewish writers of his time. On the contrary, he reflected on the incompatibility and conflict between these two worlds, and how one side (the Jews) tried to ignore this incompatibility.

The volume contains contributions from writers, therapists, artists, and scholars from disciplines as diverse as psychology and French. The first section addresses the nature of creativity and highlights the role of self-discipline in the creative process. The second section asks what we can learn from studying artists and presents qualitative, phenomenological, quantitative, and archival research on both individuals and groups of artists. The third section discusses the use of creativity within the therapeutic setting, as well as the particular therapeutic needs of creative individuals. The final section of the book presents research exploring creative cognition and its relationship to mood and perception. What makes this book unique is the interdisciplinary consideration of the topic of creativity, the inclusion of works ranging from case studies to theoretical essays, making it appealing to individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Book excerpt: "A Bibliography for After Jews and Arabs presents the original bibliography, as completed in 1992, without changes, as a glimpse into the historical record of a unique scholarly, political, poetic, and cultural journey. The bibliography itself had roots in research begun in the late 1970s and demonstrates a very wide arc. In addition to the bibliography, we include three accompanying texts here. In "Behind the Scenes: Before After Jews and Arabs," Alcalay takes us behind the closed doors of the academic process, reprinting the original reader reports and his detailed rebuttals, and in "A Bibliography for After Jews and Arabs: A Brief Introduction," Alcalay contextualizes his own path to the work he undertook, in methodological, historical, and political terms. Also included is "A Poetics of Bibliography""--Publisher's description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francophone Sephardic Fiction:Writing Migration, Diaspora, and Modernity approaches modern Sephardic literature in a comparative way to draw out similarities and differences among selected francophone novelists from various countries, with a focus on North Africa. The definition of Sepharad here is broader than just Spain: it embraces Jews whose ancestors had lived in North Africa for centuries, even before the arrival of Islam, and who still today trace their allegiance to ways of being Jewish that go back to Babylon, as do those whose ancestors spent a few hundred years in Iberia. The author traces the strong influence of oral storytelling on modern novelists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and explores the idea of the portable homeland, as exile and migration engulfed the long-rooted Sephardic communities. The author also examines diaspora concepts, how modernity and post-modernity threatened traditional ways of life, and how humor and an active return into history for the novel have done more than mere nostalgia could to enliven the portable homeland of modern francophone Sephardic fiction.

Book excerpt: Shortly after Albert Cohen left France for London to escape the Nazis, he received news of his mother’s death in Marseille. Unable to mourn her, he expressed his grief in a series of moving pieces for La France libre, which later grew into Book of My Mother. Achingly honest, intimate, and moving, this love song is a tribute to all mothers. Cohen himself expressed, "I shall not have written in vain if one of you, after reading my hymn of death, is one evening gentler with his mother because of me and my mother."

Book excerpt: Voyage au bout de la nuit (1932), by Louis-Ferdinand Celine (1894-1961), and Zazie dans le metro (1959), by Raymond Queneau (1903-1976), were two revolutionary novels in their transposition of spoken language into written language. Since their publication they have been adapted into a broad range of media, including illustrated novel, bande dessinee, film, stage performance and recorded reading. What happens to their striking literary voices as they are transposed into media that combine text and image, sound and image, or consist of sound alone? In this study, Armelle Blin-Rolland examines adaptations sparked by these two seminal novels to understand what 'voice' means in each medium, and its importance in the process of adaptation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to get to the bottom of an acute and perennial tension between our best scientific pictures of the fundamental physical structure of the world and our everyday empirical experience of it. The trouble is about the direction of time. The situation (very briefly) is that it is a consequence of almost every one of those fundamental scientific pictures--and that it is at the same time radically at odds with our common sense--that whatever can happen can just as naturally happen backwards. Albert provides an unprecedentedly clear, lively, and systematic new account--in the context of a Newtonian-Mechanical picture of the world--of the ultimate origins of the statistical regularities we see around us, of the temporal irreversibility of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, of the asymmetries in our epistemic access to the past and the future, and of our conviction that by acting now we can affect the future but not the past. Then, in the final section of the book, he generalizes the Newtonian picture to the quantum-mechanical case and (most interestingly) suggests a very deep potential connection between the problem of the direction of time and the quantum-mechanical measurement problem. The book aims to be both an original contribution to the present scientific and philosophical understanding of these matters at the most advanced level, and something in the nature of an elementary textbook on the subject accessible to interested high-school students.
