Book excerpt: La présente étude s'attarde à comprendre et illustrer le processus d'innovation dans quatre sites différents au Québec à partir du repérage de la prise de décisions tant individuelle que partagée par les intervenants locaux. L'innovation en question est l'initiative de l'École éloignée en réseau (ÉÉR) qui vise à enrichir l'environnement d'apprentissage de très petites écoles de la province de Québec depuis 2002, à l'aide des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC). Cette innovation pédagogique dans laquelle les enseignants impliqués ont transformé leurs pratiques afin de rendre l'environnement d'apprentissage des élèves plus interactif et ancré dans les théories sur les sciences de l'apprentissage actuelles (questionnement authentique, apprentissage intentionnel, communauté d'apprentissage, entre autres). Au plan organisationnel, la mise en oeuvre de cette innovation a nécessité la participation active de tous les intervenants du système (enseignants, directions d'établissement, conseillers pédagogiques, cadres de la commission scolaire, membres de la communauté) autour d'un but commun, soit la réussite de l'innovation. Finalement, il s'agit d'une innovation sociale puisque les efforts consentis par les intervenants de tout le système vise à améliorer la réussite scolaire des élèves, mais aussi à donner une égalité de chance et de succès, peu importe la région d'appartenance des élèves. À partir d'une méthodologie d'expérimentation de devis, des entrevues avec quatre types d'intervenants (enseignant, direction d'établissement, conseiller pédagogique, direction des services éducatifs ou direction générale de la commission scolaire) ont été conduites et analysées afin de repérer la prise de décision individuelle des intervenants face à l'innovation de même que leur rationalité limitée (Simon, 1959) la concernant. De fait, pour comprendre un processus de mise en oeuvre d'une innovation, il importe d'approfondir les raisons d'adoption ou de rejet de l'innovation par les participants (Amable, 2001; Rogers, 2005). Ce repérage de la prise de décision individuelle nous a permis d'identifier différents profils en fonction des rôles professionnels, mais aussi des quatre sites participants. Par la suite, nous avons identifié les principaux objets de décision sur lesquels des décisions (Elster, 2010) partagées par les intervenants ont été prises lors des rencontres formelles d'un comité de suivi de l'ÉÉR dans chacun des sites. À partir de l'historique du site dans l'innovation, trois modèles de diffusion de l'innovation dans un système ont émergé, et le rôle des conditions d'innovation nécessaires pour soutenir et faciliter la diffusion de l'innovation est mis en évidence (Ely, 1990).

Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which our ideas about language and identity which used to be framed in national and political terms as a matter of rights and citizenship are increasingly recast in economic terms as a matter of added value. It argues that this discursive shift is connected to specific characteristics of the globalized new economy in what can be thought of as "late capitalism". Through ten ethnographic case studies, it demonstrates the complex ways in which older nationalist ideologies which invest language with value as a source of pride get bound up with newer neoliberal ideologies which invest language with value as a source of profit. The complex interaction between these modes of mobilizing linguistic resources challenges some of our ideas about globalization, hinting that we are in a period of intensification of modernity, in which the limits of the nation-State are stretched, but not (yet) undone. At the same time, this book argues, this intensification also calls into question modernist ways of looking at language and identity, requiring a more serious engagement with capitalism and how it constitutes symbolic (including linguistic) as well as material markets.
