Book Synopsis How People Learn by : National Research Council
Download or read book How People Learn written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-08-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First released in the Spring of 1999, How People Learn has been expanded to show how the theories and insights from the original book can translate into actions and practice, now making a real connection between classroom activities and learning behavior. This edition includes far-reaching suggestions for research that could increase the impact that classroom teaching has on actual learning. Like the original edition, this book offers exciting new research about the mind and the brain that provides answers to a number of compelling questions. When do infants begin to learn? How do experts learn and how is this different from non-experts? What can teachers and schools do-with curricula, classroom settings, and teaching methodsâ€"to help children learn most effectively? New evidence from many branches of science has significantly added to our understanding of what it means to know, from the neural processes that occur during learning to the influence of culture on what people see and absorb. How People Learn examines these findings and their implications for what we teach, how we teach it, and how we assess what our children learn. The book uses exemplary teaching to illustrate how approaches based on what we now know result in in-depth learning. This new knowledge calls into question concepts and practices firmly entrenched in our current education system. Topics include: How learning actually changes the physical structure of the brain. How existing knowledge affects what people notice and how they learn. What the thought processes of experts tell us about how to teach. The amazing learning potential of infants. The relationship of classroom learning and everyday settings of community and workplace. Learning needs and opportunities for teachers. A realistic look at the role of technology in education.

Download or read book Inductive Reasoning in the Secondary Classroom written by Gloria A. Neubert and published by National Education Association. This book was released on 1992 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been alleged that few American students can use their knowledge effectively in thinking and reasoning. This study urges teachers to give more attention to student abilities in analyzing, classifying, comparing, formulating hypotheses, and drawing conclusions--that is, thinking skills essential to reasoning processes. Designed to familiarize secondary classroom teachers with one model of instruction for developing students' reasoning abilities, this book gives practical assistance in learning how to use the inductive approach, a teaching approach that actively involves students in the use of their own reasoning while learning content area material. Each chapter of the book includes a section that asks readers to recall experience pertinent to the material in the chapter, a set of questions to answer as the material is read, and a series of activities designed to lead readers through the developmental stages of the learning process. Chapters of the book are: (1) What is the inductive approach? (2) Why use the inductive approach? (3) How to use the inductive approach for concept development; (4) How to use the inductive approach for principle formation; (5) Inductive reasoning in English; (6) Inductive reasoning in mathematics; (7) Inductive reasoning in science; and (8) Inductive reasoning in social studies. A 90-item bibliography is attached. (RS)

In The Strategic Teacher, you'll find a repertoire of strategies designed and proven to meet today's high standards and reach diverse learners. Twenty reliable, flexible strategies (along with dozens of variations) are organized into these groups of instruction: *mastery style to emphasize the development of student memory; *understanding style to expand students' capacities to reason and explain; *self-expressive style to stimulate and nourish students' imaginations and creativity; *interpersonal style to help students find meaning in the relationships they forge as partners and team members, united in the act of learning; and *four-style strategies that integrate all four styles. To guide teachers in delivering content to students, the authors started with the best research-based teaching and learning strategies and created a tool called the Strategic Dashboard. The dashboard provides information about each teaching strategy in a concise, visual profile; it is also designed to document how you incorporate current, highly respected research into your instructional plans. Book Synopsis Teaching Beginning Reading and Writing with the Picture Word Inductive Model by : Emily F. Calhoun
Download or read book Teaching Beginning Reading and Writing with the Picture Word Inductive Model written by Emily F. Calhoun and published by ASCD. This book was released on 1999-03-15 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this practical guide to teaching beginning language learners of all ages, Calhoun encourages us to begin where the learners begin--with their developed listening and speaking vocabularies and other accumulated knowledge about the world. Engage students in shaking words out of a picture--words from their speaking vocabularies--to begin the process of building their reading and writing skills. Use the picture word inductive model (PWIM) to teach several skills simultaneously, beginning with the mechanics of forming letters to hearing and identifying the phonetic components of language, to classifying words and sentences, through forming paragraphs and stories based on observation. Built into the PWIM is the structure required to assess the needs and understandings of your students immediately, adjust the lesson in response, and to use explicit instruction and inductive activities. Individual, small-group, and large-group activities are inherent to the model and flow naturally as the teacher arranges instruction according to the 10 steps of the PWIM. Students and teachers move through the model and work on developing skills and abilities in reading, writing, listening, and comprehension as tools for thinking, learning, and sharing ideas. Note: This product listing is for the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation has replaced stereotypical and old methods as an attempt to make English language teaching and learning appealing, effective, and simple. However, teaching a second language through literature may be a paramount tool to consolidate not only students’ lexical and grammatical competences, but also for the development of their cultural awareness and broadening of their knowledge through interaction and collaboration that foster collective learning. Despite past difficulties, literature’s position in relation to language teaching can be revendicated and revalued. Using Literature to Teach English as a Second Language is an essential research publication that exposes the current state of this methodological approach and observes its reverberations, usefulness, strengths, and weaknesses when used in a classroom where English is taught as a second language. In this way, this book will provide updated tools to explore teaching and learning through the most creative and enriching manifestations of one language – literature. Featuring a range of topics such as diversity, language learning, and plurilingualism, this book is ideal for academicians, curriculum designers, administrators, education professionals, researchers, and students.

Book Synopsis Learner-Centered Management Education by :
Download or read book Learner-Centered Management Education written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great revolution taking place in the field of education. It covers the social issues, the culture of the classroom, life-long learning concerns, and perhaps both last and least, technology advancement. Inductive method of teaching and learning is an umbrella term that includes a range of instructional methods. They are all learner-centered or student-centered, because they impose more responsibility on students for their own learning than the traditional classroom lecture-based deductive approach does. They can all be characterized as constructivist methods, building on the widely accepted principle that students construct their own versions of reality rather than simply absorbing versions taught by their teachers. This study reviews most commonly used inductive teaching methods, including inquiry learning, problem- based learning, project-based learning, case-based teaching, discovery learning, and just-in-time teaching. The paper defines each method, highlights common features and specific differences, and reviews research on the most effectiveness of the methods. While the strength of the evidence varies from one method to another, inductive methods are consistently found to be equal to, and in general more effective than our traditional teaching methods for achieving a broad range of learning outcomes.
