Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prolog has a declarative style. A predicate definition includes both the input and output parameters, and it allows a programmer to define a desired result without being concerned about the detailed instructions of how it is to be computed. Such a declarative language offers a solution to the software crisis, because it is shorter and more concise, more powerful and understandable than present-day languages. Logic highlights novel aspects of programming, namely using the same program to compute a relation and its inverse, and supporting deductive retrieval of informa tion. This is a book about using Prolog. Its real point is the examples introduced from Chapter 3 onwards, and so a Prolog programmer does not need to read Chapters 1 and 2, which are oriented more to teachers and to students, respec tively. The book is recommended for introductory and advanced university courses, where students may need to remember the basics about logic program ming and Prolog, before starting doing. Chapters 1 and 2 were also kept for the sake of unity of the whole material. In Chapter 1 a teaching strategy is explained based on the key concepts of Pro log which are novel aspects of programming. Prolog is enhanced as a computer programming language used for solving problems that involve objects and the relationships between objects. This chapter provides a pedagogical tour of pre scriptions for the organization of Prolog programs, by pointing out the main draw backs novices may encounter.

Book excerpt: Since the first publishing of Programming in Prolog in 1981, Pro log has continued to attract an unexpectedly great deal of interest in the computer science community and is now seen as a potential ba sis for an important new generation of programming languages and systems. We hope that Programming in Prolog has partially satisfied the increasing need for an easy, yet comprehensive introduction to the language as a tool for practical programming. In this second edition we have taken the opportunity to improve the presentation and to correct various minor errors in the original. We thank the many people who have given us suggestions for corrections and improvement. W. F. C. C. S. M. Cambridge, England August, 198-1 Preface to the First Edition The computer programming language Prolog is quickly gaining popularity throughout the world. Since its beginnings around 1970, Prolog has been chosen by many programmers for applications of symbolic computation, including: • relational databases • mathematical logic • abstract problem solving • understanding naturallangur~ge • design automation • symbolic equation solving • biochemical structure analysis • many areas of artificial intelligence Until now, there has been no textbook with the aim of teaching Prolog as a practical programming language. It is perhaps a tribute to Prolog that so many people have been motivated to learn it by referring to the necessarily concise reference manuals, a few published papers, and by the orally transmitted 'folklore' of the modern computing community.

Book excerpt: Prolog is a programming language, but a rather unusual one. Prolog'' is short for Programming with Logic'', and the link with logic gives Prolog its special character. At the heart of Prolog lies a surprising idea: don't tell the computer what to do. Instead, describe situations of interest, and compute by asking questions. Prolog will logically deduce new facts about the situations and give its deductions back to us as answers. Why learn Prolog? For a start, its say what the problem is, rather than how to solve it'' stance, means that it is a very high level language, good for knowledge rich applications such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and the semantic web. So by studying Prolog, you gain insight into how sophisticated tasks can be handled computationally. Moreover, Prolog requires a different mindset. You have to learn to see problems from a new perspective, declaratively rather than procedurally. Acquiring this mindset, and learning to appreciate the links between logic and programming, makes the study of Prolog both challenging and rewarding. Learn Prolog Now! is a practical introduction to this fascinating language. Freely available as a web-book since 2002 (see www.learnprolognow.org) Learn Prolog Now! has became one of the most popular introductions to the Prolog programming language, an introduction prized for its clarity and down-to-earth approach. It is widely used as a textbook at university departments around the world, and even more widely used for self study. College Publications is proud to present here the first hard-copy version of this online classic. Carefully revised in the light of reader's feedback, and now with answers to all the exercises, here you will find the essential material required to help you learn Prolog now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued popularity of Prolog and oflogic programming in general has called for a new edition in which we have corrected a few minor errors found in the previous edition. Since the previous edition of this book, the development of Prolog has proceeded with much vigour and creativity on the part of hundreds of researchers around the world. For example, the International Conference on Logic Programming will meet in 1995 for the twelfth time; the Internet newsgroup comp . 1 ang . pro log exchanges many messages daily; and there are numerous World-Wide Web resources of interest to Prolog users. It is no longer posssible to track the many books on Prolog and implementations of Prolog that are now available. The Prolog idea has been extended to new languages for manipulating sets of constraints, functional expressions, type hierarchies, and object-oriented programs. And yet throughout this time the Edinburgh Prolog syntax and semantics have served as a standard and as a base of stability. In tum, we hope that this book can continue to serve as an introduction to the language and its use. Cambridge, England W. F. C. July 1994 C. S. M. PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION We have added new material to Chapter 3 to give an account of up-to-date programming techniques using accumulators and difference structures. Chapter 8 contains some new information on syntax errors. Operator precedences are now compatible with the most widely-used implementations.

Book excerpt: The popular image, derived from Piaget, of the child as a solitary thinker struggling to construct a personal understanding of the mathematical and logical properties of the physical world has given way in recent years to a view of children's learning and thinking as embedded in social relationships. This shift is here reflected in a set of readings which show the child being initiated into shared cultural understandings through close relationships with parents and teachers, as well as siblings and peers.

Book excerpt: This introductory textbook uniquely combines a beginning course in the logic programming language Prolog with a full PC implementation of the language on a free disk. As such it combines the demands made on a coursebook with the hands-on facilities required for self-study.; The book has a practical orientation, with step-by-step development of the key concepts contained in the language. It encourages students to implement all the examples provided as an essential part of the learning process. In addition, the book introduces foundational concepts of artificial intelligence AI alongside its development of the powerful features of Prolog.; The book is ideally suited to an undergraduate course in AI or logic programming. providing a free full version of the language, it also offers an inexpensive package for off-the-shelf self-study for professionals, as well as providing each student with a personal copy of Prolog for home study. It should be valuable for both undergraduate and professionals.

Book excerpt: Addressed to readers at different levels of programming expertise, The Practice ofProlog offers a departure from current books that focus on small programming examples requiringadditional instruction in order to extend them to full programming projects. It shows how to designand organize moderate to large Prolog programs, providing a collection of eight programmingprojects, each with a particular application, and illustrating how a Prolog program was written tosolve the application. These range from a simple learning program to designing a database formolecular biology to natural language generation from plans and stream data analysis.Leon Sterlingis Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Science at Case Western ReserveUniversity.
