Book excerpt: CHAPTER ONE page 4 Chapter One contains 12 Original Psaltery Practice Sheets intended to familiarize Psaltery Players with an ability to interact with musicians playing solo parts. The Musical Scores in this chapter were written specifically for the Psaltery by a Psaltery Player. All note symbols are marked with letter notations located directly below them for beginning Psaltery Players that are familiar with their instrument and playing techniques as also described in the book 'LEARN TO PLAY THE PSALTERY' by Caroline Gilmore. In that manual, students are given just enough basic information on music theory to be able to play in tune and on time without needing an ability to read music. Students are encouraged to play notes as marked in each score in Chapter One before moving on to the next arrangement in the first chapter of this learning manual. Students must learn their parts to perfection before engaging with other band members or singers in order achieve the full value of their inter active part for each song. Once the Psaltery Player feels comfortable with orchestrating their entire accompanying arrangement, as provided in Chapter One and are able to read the music easily, then they are encouraged to move on to Chapter Two to begin practice reading Melody Lines and Lead Sheets. Lead sheets in Chapter Two do not contain letter notations for musical symbols or practice parts provided for the Psaltery Player as in Chapter One. CHAPTER TWO page 39 Lead Sheets for the 12 Psaltery Worship Songs can be found in this chapter. They contain the full Melody Line or Lead Sheet for singers and musicians. Advanced Psaltery Players that are ready to read music without notations marked under the scores will also be able to play Melody Lines found in this section. CHAPTER THREE page 89 Chapter Three begins with information pertaining to the development of the 12 Worship Songs in this manual. It goes into detail about the author's inspiration and gives you some information on her musical background. This section of the manual contains Lyric Sheets for the Lead Scores in Chapter Two. Beginning Psaltery Practice Sheets for songs in this section can be found in Chapter One of this manual, however are not a part of the Musical Scores in Chapter Two and are only intended for the Psaltery Player's interaction with the presented Lead Sheets, therefore the lyrics will not fit with the practice sheets and must be sung along to Lead Scores in Chapter Two only.

Lessons include reading the tablature, tuning, bowing techniques, holding the psaltery and some of my favorite Gospel, Christmas and Traditional folk songs.Personally I want to play the Psaltery in accompany with the mountain dulcimer. Therefore, I used the songs in my book, “Playing The Mountain Dulcimer Made Easy Vol I” book and arranged them to be played with the Psaltery. However, you do not have to combine these two books, this Psaltery Instruction Book is a stand alone project! If you want to play your Psaltery along with the mountain dulcimer, simply have the dulcimer player use the tablature in the “Playing The Mountain Dulcimer Made Easy Vol I” instruction book (they can play in either DAA or DAD tablature) and as they play you can join them with your Psaltery by playing in the key of “D”. However, you do not have to combine these two books, this Psaltery Instruction Book is a stand alone project!I also included the Psaltery tablature for the Key of “C”. It is easier to play the Psaltery in the Key of “C”. . . so you can play your instrument in this "Easy" Key (accompanied by a guitar would be nice) and enjoy the sweet sound of this unique mountain instrument!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter of the twentieth-century saw a renewed interest in the hammered dulcimer in the United States at the grassroots level as well as from elements of the Folk Revival. This book offers the reader a discussion of the medieval origins of the dulcimer and its subsequent spread under many different names to other parts of the world. Drawing on articles the author has written in English as well as articles by specialists in their own languages, Gifford explains the history and evolution of the instrument. Special attention is paid to the North American tradition from the early 18th-century to the 1970s revival. Drawing from local histories, news clippings, photographs, and interviews, the book examines the playing of the dulcimer and its associated social meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses core questions about the role of materials in general and of wood in particular in the construction of string instruments used in the modern symphony orchestra – violins, violas, cellos and basses. Further attention is given to materials for classical guitars, harps, harpsichords and pianos. While some of the approaches discussed are traditional, most of them depend upon new scientific approaches to the study of the structure of materials, such as for example wood cell structure, which is visible only using modern high resolution microscopic techniques. Many examples of modern and classical instruments are examined, together with the relevance of classical techniques for the treatment of wood. Composite materials, especially designed for soundboards could be a good substitute for some traditional wood species. The body and soundboard of the instrument are of major importance for their acoustical properties, but the study also examines traditional and new wood species used for items such as bows, the instrument neck, string pegs, etc. Wood species’ properties for musical instruments and growth origins of woods used by great makers such as Antonio Stradivari are examined and compared with more recently grown woods available to current makers. The role of varnish in the appearance and acoustics of the final instrument is also discussed, since it has often been proposed as a ‘secret ingredient’ used by great makers. Aspects related to strings are commented. As well as discussing these subjects, with many illustrations from classical and contemporary instruments, the book gives attention to conservation and restoration of old instruments and the physical results of these techniques. There is also discussion of the current value of old instruments both for modern performances and as works of art having great monetary value. The book will be of interest and value to researchers, advanced students, music historians, and contemporary string instrument makers. Musicians in general, particularly those playing string instruments, will also find its revelations fascinating. It will also attract the attention of those using wood for a variety of other purposes, for its use in musical instruments uncovers many of its fundamental features. Professor Neville H. FletcherAustralian National University, Canberra
