Book excerpt: Learning any second language is difficult, but Japanese has to be one of the more difficult ones to master. On top of the 3 writing systems, one of which has almost 2,000 characters, you still have all the regular components of a language such as verbs, adjectives, nouns, and grammar. There are several books available now that teach you how to learn the vast Japanese writing systems. There are equally as many books that teach grammar and verb conjugation. But there are few, if any, books that teach fast ways to learn the actual verbs and adjectives. Learning Japanese Verbs and Adjectives Using Memory Mnemonics uses a creative approach to learning words fast, and more importantly, remembering them longer. Memory mnemonics, or triggers, are used to remind your brain where it just recorded some piece of information. Most people can learn most anything fast, but they have trouble with recollection. This book uses triggers that sound like the verb and the meaning. For example, the verb for "to disturb or corrupt" is "midas". How can you remember this and differentiate it from the hundreds of other verbs. Using a memory trigger can make it easier to learn faster and remember longer. One trigger could be to think of King Midas. He was so corrupt with greed he turned everything to gold. So you can remember midas as corrupt King Midas. Learning Japanese Verbs and Adjectives Using Memory Mnemonics contains triggers for 350 verbs and 126 adjectives. Then as a bonus there are trigger suggestions for an additional 102 verbs, that's over 450 verbs. Using this book you can quickly learn Japanese verbs and adjectives and nearly double your communication skill in a very short time.

To effectively learn Japanese, a strong knowledge of Japanese vocabulary is needed. The complete Japanese Adjective Guide is a simple approach to understanding Japanese grammar and syntax, methodically leading students through the intricacies of adjective use. Exercises build mastery and confidence as grammar topics are introduced. Regular and "na" adjectives are discussed in separate sections to allow beginning students to clarify differences. Vocabulary is kept to a minimum, with a concentration on the fundamental patterns of adjective use—what works with one adjective will work with another like it—and beginning Japanese language students with limited vocabulary will be able to do the exercises without the distraction of constantly looking up new words. An invaluable workbook for any student of introductory Japanese, The Complete Japanese Adjective Guide is written so the reader can master adjectives, which in turn will help distinguishing desu forms and verbs. Lessons are incremental, with easy–to–follow explanations for independent study—gradually working up to the more difficult patters, and include many memory drills to afford the opportunity to thoroughly master the topic at hand. This volume also includes a convenient glossary of nouns. Highlights of this book are: Clear explanations of every adjective formation. Comprehensive exercises and drills. Completely romanized for ease of use.

Book excerpt: ***FOR HIGH-BEGINNER TO LOW-INTERMEDIATE LEARNERS*** Master Japanese adjectives and adverbs in the next 30 days, with this innovative, story-based immersion method. Just read one chapter per day, complete the exercises and watch as your speech becomes more colourful, descriptive and fluent! "I love Olly's work - and you will too!" - Barbara Oakley, PhD, Author of New York Times bestseller A Mind for Numbers Most Japanese students try to learn Japanese grammar and vocabulary through rules and rote memorisation. This doesn't work, and is extremely stressful for you as a learner. Why? Because there are lots so many rules to learn and vocabulary to remember that it's impossible to hold them all in your head at the same time while you're speaking. It's also not a natural approach ... native speakers don't learn the language with rules and memory tricks, after all! With 30-Day Mastery: Amazing Adjectives & Adverbs you'll learn through example and context, just like native speakers do! The magic of learning through story is that your main focus is actually not on memorising anything... you concentrate on understanding and enjoying the story! As you're reading, you will find that the rules surrounding Japanese adjectives and adverbs, as well as their meaning, will begin to lodge themselves subconsciously in your brain. It doesn't happen right away - in fact it may take a couple of weeks for you to feel the real effects. But by the end of this book, you'll have a native-like command of Japanese descriptors that will amaze you and your friends! In this story, you will read about Ai, a 19-year-old student at a prestigious cooking school in Tokyo. She has always dreamt of becoming a chef, however, the competition at the school is hard and, coming up to their graduation day, Ai and her close friends are getting ready for the school's annual competition. Together, they must come up with dishes that are both traditionally Japanese and original if they want to win the competition and be scouted to work in prestigious restaurants across the country. Not yet convinced? Here are all the features you will find in this book: Short chapters of 300 words each - just read one chapter a day for 30 days! A text designed specifically for students at N4/N5 level A detailed language overview so you can review and quickly understand the uses of all adjectives and adverbs as you immerse yourself in the story Short daily practice exercises to practice as you go Bilingual word lists to quickly look up new vocabulary Hiragana superscript to help you with difficult Kanji SCROLL UP AND GRAB YOUR COPY!

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

For this reason, the book is centered on a specific Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) level. This second book, of the Japanese Kanji Mnemonics Series, focuses on the next 181 Japanese characters (kanji) found on the N4 level test and it assumes the reader has knowledge of the two Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) as well as the 103 kanji required for the JLPT N5. In order to start using this book, please follow the following steps: 1. THE FRONT PAGE: a. Flashcard Style: The book is recommended to be used as flashcards. Therefore, the student will find the kanji mnemonic on the front page and the kanji information on the other side. b. Mnemonic: The drawings have been made to match the characters' radicals, elements and history as much as possible. In the cases where this was not possible, I just tried to make it easy to remember. However, creativity from the reader is also highly encouraged. 2. THE REVERSE PAGE: a. Common Meaning(s): The student will find the meanings that are most appropriate for the N4 level. b. Sentence: a sentence to help remember the kanji better and that also creates a story that can be used as a mnemonic device. Each sentence was formed by breaking down the kanji into different elements for easy memorization. The elements are can be radicals, components, kanji or hanzi.

Book excerpt: Since each kanji character in the Japanese language is associated with its own unique vocabulary, the study of kanji unavoidably requires that students learn many new Japanese words. To help you organize and keep track of the new words that are introduced in our three Learn to Read in Japanese books, we have assembled this companion glossary. The glossary lists more than 7,400 Japanese terms that are used in the three books, and it provides definitions and memory aides for nearly every term. The memory aides are of two types: explanations which describe how the listed terms are derived from other known Japanese words, or when such explanations aren't possible, mnemonics to help you to remember the terms' definitions and pronunciations. The glossary also identifies more than 8,000 synonyms (or at least "related terms") which make it possible for you to compare similar words side by side. Of course, this glossary cannot replace a good Japanese dictionary, nor is it intended to do so. However, it includes thousands of explanations, mnemonics and synonyms that you won't find in a standard dictionary, and it focuses precisely on the terms that you will encounter in the three Learn to Read in Japanese books. We think that it will help to make your Japanese study easier and more interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the first volume of Remembering the Kanji, the present work provides students with helpful tools for learning the pronunciation of the kanji. Behind the notorious inconsistencies in the way the Japanese language has come to pronounce the characters it received from China lie several coherent patterns. Identifying these patterns and arranging them in logical order can reduce dramatically the amount of time spent in the brute memorization of sounds unrelated to written forms. Many of the “primitive elements,” or building blocks, used in the drawing of the characters also serve to indicate the “Chinese reading” that particular kanji use, chiefly in compound terms. By learning one of the kanji that uses such a “signal primitive,” one can learn the entire group at the same time. In this way, Remembering the Kanji 2 lays out the varieties of phonetic pattern and offers helpful hints for learning readings, that might otherwise appear completely random, in an efficient and rational way. Individual frames cross-reference the kanji to alternate readings and to the frame in volume 1 in which the meaning and writing of the kanji was first introduced. A parallel system of pronouncing the kanji, their “Japanese readings,” uses native Japanese words assigned to particular Chinese characters. Although these are more easily learned because of the association of the meaning to a single word, the author creates a kind of phonetic alphabet of single syllable words, each connected to a simple Japanese word, and shows how they can be combined to help memorize particularly troublesome vocabulary. The 4th edition has been updated to include the 196 new kanji approved by the government in 2010 as “general-use” kanji.
