Book excerpt: In this study the mechanism of extinction of a lean limit flame in a premixed methane-air or propane-air system was studied in a vertical rectangular flammability tube with variable inside dimensions. Both upward and downward extinction were observed for methane while only upward extinction was studied for propane. In addition to the observations of extinction, a theoretical analysis of the flow ahead of the upward propagating flame was made which showed that at extinction the upward propagating flame is severely stretched in the Karlovitz sense. The upward propagating flame in the 50 x 50 mm tube had a stable hemispherical shape with a trailing skirt towards the walls. Extinction in this case occurred from the central holding region of the flame where the stretch was calculated to be the maximum. In larger than 50 x 50 mm tubes the flame is hydrodynamically unstable and extinction occurs on one of the instability cycles. The downward propagating flame in methane is almost flat in the tube but it propagates in an unstable manner. It was observed, both with image intensifier photographs and with a schlieren optics, that this flame extinguished by first losing heat to the walls. Thus the downward propagating flame is extinguished by heat loss mechanism coupled with a differential buoyancy driving mechanism which is sufficiently complex that it cannot be modeled using one dimensional heat loss theories.

Book excerpt: Experimental studies of lean flammability limits (LFLs) for methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, in addition to mixtures of these gases (i.e. CH 4/H2, H2/CO, and CH4/CO2) were performed at temperatures up to 200° C and pressures up to 9 bar. ASTM Standard E918 (1983) provided the framework for tests at these elevated conditions, using a one-liter pressure-rated test cylinder in which the fuel-air mixtures were prepared and then ignited. Flammability is determined using a 7% and 5% pressure rise criterion per the ASTM E918 and European EN 1839 standards, respectively. The LFLs for each gas and gas mixture are found to decrease linearly with increasing temperature in the temperature range tested. The LFLs of hydrogen and mixtures containing hydrogen are observed to increase with an increase in the initial pressure, whereas the LFLs of all other mixtures exhibit a negligible dependence on pressure. For mixtures, predicted LFL values obtained using Le Chatelier's mixing rule are fairly consistent with the experimentally determined values near ambient conditions, however it is not recommended for use at elevated pressure and/or temperature. The purpose for characterizing the flammability limits for these gaseous mixtures is to extend the results to developing appropriate procedures for the safe industrial use of renewable gases, such as bio-derived methane, biogas composed mainly of methane and carbon dioxide, and renewably derived syngas which contains large quantities of hydrogen and carbon monoxide gas.

Book excerpt: Extensively using experimental and numerical illustrations, CombustionPhenomena: Selected Mechanisms of Flame Formation, Propagation, and Extinction provides a comprehensive survey of the fundamental processes of flame formation, propagation, and extinction. Taking you through the stages of combustion, leading experts visually display, mathematically explain, and clearly theorize on important physical topics of combustion. After a historical introduction to the field, they discuss combustion chemistry, flammability limits, and spark ignition. They also study counterflow twin-flame configuration, flame in a vortex core, the propagation characteristics of edge flames, instabilities, and tulip flames. In addition, the book describes flame extinction in narrow channels, global quenching of premixed flames by turbulence, counterflow premixed flame extinction limits, the interaction of flames with fluids in rotating vessels, and turbulent flames. The final chapter explores diffusion flames as well as combustion in spark- and compression-ignition engines. It also examines the transition from deflagration to detonation, along with the detonation wave structure. With downloadable resources of images that beautifully illustrate a range of combustion phenomena, this book facilitates a practical understanding of the processes occurring in the conception, spread, and extinguishment of a flame. It will help you on your way to finding solutions to real issues encountered in transportation, power generation, industrial processes, chemical engineering, and fire and explosion hazards.
