Book excerpt: Leading Change Through Problem Solving at Northeast Georgia Health System was created to send a consistent message to NGHS's 7,000 employees on their Quest for Excellence. It is no surprise that they discovered that Lean Leadership is much more than implementing tools. It is a mindset that is developed through practicing deliberate problem solving, with a coach. The Lean Leadership Development Model (LLDM) presented in this book is intuitive and aligns well with accepted principles of operational excellence. It expands significantly on the elements of Lean, structuring them in a more specific way that can be operationalized by lean practitioners. You can learn everything you want about the Toyota Way; you can implement the tools they have created, but if you do not have the behaviors established within your culture, it will not be successful for long-term sustainment of operational excellence. This Shingo Award Winning book can be referred to as the fieldbook for The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership. It answers the questions: How can I apply this in my organization? What concrete actions can I take to begin the journey of becoming a lean leader? How can I spread this learning to all parts of the organization? What critical tools are needed to turn the theory to practice? The book treats you as a student who will be actively engaged in developing lean leader skills as you read. It acts as a tutorial for beginning the journey.

Book Synopsis The Future of Nursing by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book The Future of Nursing written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
Download or read book Making Change written by Tina P. Kruse and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Change demonstrates the potential for youth to engage in social entrepreneurship to transform themselves and their communities. Effective for all young people, this approach is most impactful for youth in marginalized communities where the opportunity gap, suppressed social mobility, and economic disparity are most profound. In such settings, engaging youth as leaders of social change offers the exponential benefits of personal empowerment, community enhancement, and economic transformation.Grounded both in interdisciplinary theory and an expansive set of practical case examples, this book uses an asset focus and cultural relevance that centralizes youth and communities in social entrepreneurship, while introducing vocabulary and frameworks for youth social entrepreneurship advocates to gain resources and political traction for the approach. Social entrepreneurship is outlined as a social justice mechanism that allows disempowered adolescents to change their own communities, with a positive compounding effect on their own lives and futures. Consequently, readers will have the opportunity consider the complex interplay of individual, economic, and community development, versus oversimplifying causes or solutions of social disparities. Individuals engaged in youth work, program design, funding, and the study of youth and community development will appreciate the text's exploration of existing research and theory that cross scholarly disciplines to promote a robust view of youth development.
Book Synopsis Innovative Community Change Practices by : Norman Walzer
Download or read book Innovative Community Change Practices written by Norman Walzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national recession forced many communities to examine new and innovative ways to promote local economic development, resulting in long-term community changes. New techniques and approaches were used to identify available opportunities and programs which could take advantage of development opportunities. A common theme among the contributions to this book is a focus on building leadership capacity, and several chapters discuss the successful practices which are aimed at bringing new leaders into local development efforts. Especially important are ways to identify youth and young adults, and designing programs that bring them into active leadership roles within community development efforts. On a broader scale, several authors present material regarding building local entrepreneurship capacity, and recognizing that entrepreneurs at different stages in their development have different training and support needs. The discussions in this book will help local policymakers and development practitioners better understand the various development techniques, and find ways to build capacity within their community, stimulating development. This information will be especially useful for groups interested in engaging youth and populations who, in the past, have not been especially active in discussions about community and economic development. This book was originally published as a special issue of Community Development.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
Book Synopsis Leading in the Age of Innovations by : Lenka Theodoulides
Download or read book Leading in the Age of Innovations written by Lenka Theodoulides and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading in the Age of Innovations centres on the need for a more complex process-relational oriented approach to leadership. The complexity of leadership has grown significantly during the 21st century where the need to adapt to the escalating changes in our society and workplace forms one of the most important prerequisites to succeed. Leading in the Age of Innovations represents the outcomes of the lengthy scientific work that was undertaken for the past 10 years and it is still an ongoing process. This book introduces a new concept of leadership introduces a new concept of leadership based on the process and relational dimensions which resulted in the development of the Reflective Leadership concept. The new model of leadership provides a unique concept on how to bring together various disciplines and explains the overlapping relations between them. Moreover, the proposed view on leadership reflects the current evolution around the globe highlighting the importance of change and innovation. In organizations, too much focus is on the end product and the technical details of how a product is made and distributed. Less attention is focused on how people interact, and how the human capacity is effectively supported by leaders who, on the other hand, are expected to support a culture of innovation. This behavioural interaction is governed by a set of predictable values and norms. These relationships need to be understood for an organization to prosper and is thus far more important to the leadership process. Leading in the Age of Innovations seeks to establish this understanding and will be key reading to researchers, scholars and practitioners alike in the field of leadership, organizational studies and related disciplines.
