Book excerpt: ‘Linking Leadership’ provides a reference for senior executives or those aiming at a cross-border career, to understand cultural differences across selected countries. Each semester we report on our quantitative survey-based global study, on our analyses of existing in-country leadership literature, preferably written by locals in the target language. Besides we try to obtain empirical validations through expert interviews with native specialists. This new issue of our leadership series presents country-specific analysis of culturally endorsed leadership practices for the countries: Afghanistan, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brunei, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Ghana, Japan, Jordan, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Myanmar, Oman, Poland, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain and Vietnam, This publication contains contributions from around 125 researchers from sixteen countries who participated in the Cross-Cultural Business Skills elective offered by the Part-time Academy of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA). Abstract: What are the main reasons for the fact that some companies are able to produce more innovative products and services of better quality in less time for their customers compared to their competitors in a given market? Which are the most important success factors and leadership implications that make some small and medium-sized firms more innovative and more successful than others? Those have been the underlying questions that guided us, when writing this paper on the management of innovation and its role for the accomplishment of leadership excellence in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). When searching the literature of the past five years one can find a vast amount of published articles and studies on innovation and the management of innovation but only a limited number of articles dealt with the specific situation and needs of SMEs. Thus we felt that it would be helpful for leaders of this type of companies to identify a set of practicable implications and measures to be taken in order to support and foster innovation. Of course we cannot reinvent the wheel by setting completely new rules of doing business in SMEs. But what we can do here is trying to identify relevant steps helping to support innovative [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business and employee management are key subjects in business administration. For decades, actually for centuries, there has been a discussion about how effective leadership of people or employees can be realized. It has always been a major concern within market-based economic systems to learn how its products and services should be designed in order to generate consumer demand. That the discussion about business and employee management is more relevant than ever is linked to the fact that leadership situations are influenced by a variety of external factors. They include, in particular, political, cultural, social, demographic, economic, and technological developments. It is therefore required for business and employee management to be adapted to those external framework conditions on a permanent basis. In former times, the assumption in mainstream leadership research was that leadership success relied on specific personal characteristics. Later on, the prevailing view was that the decisive factors in employee management lied in specific leadership behavior or leadership styles. Today's research on leadership is dominated by situation-oriented approaches, providing for specific leadership concepts for specific organizational and employee-related structures. The present thesis is an attempt to bundle a variety of approaches to leadership with the aim of providing an overarching framework for concepts of a similar nature. Therefore, the leadership concept to be developed in what follows is to be characterized by the principles of holism and sustainability. The first step is to present the fundamentals of leadership and management in order to introduce key terms and concepts and provide an overview of the research on leadership. Chapter 3 deals with separately displaying the business and employee management approaches of various management pioneers, distinguishing between early and con-temporary pioneers. Each approach is presented in consideration of its key elements, its strengths and opportunities, as well as its weaknesses and limitations. The fourth chapter, finally, is devoted to developing a holistic and sustainable leader-ship concept.

Book excerpt: In this book, internationally renowned scholars and practitioners elaborate on political as well as managerial questions, e.g. how to make overriding Public Governance changes the ’guiding model’ for a now needed stronger strategic approach. More specifically, their focus is on how moves towards a re-positioning as an enabling authority are to be made drivers for adapting management systems across all levels. In accordance with present developments, the authors explain how changes in the overall governance structure have to be used to adapt leadership practices in a more output-oriented or even entrepreneurial fashion. Overall, the underlying idea is to provide some further basics for a public sector type of a design-oriented management science.

Book excerpt: Competencies are a component of human capital and one of the most important assets of an enterprise. They play an important role in strengthening the position of the company in a competitive market. Investing in the development of competencies increases the organisation's ability to grow and compete through innovations. This book presents a multi-dimensional analysis of the relationship between managerial competencies and innovations. It analyses the role of a manager in a modern organisation, functions performed by managers, management styles and key challenges, including shaping behaviour in the process of managing change in an organisation, as well as an analysis of the structure of competencies, in particular managerial competencies, and the conditions of the process of forming managerial competencies. Management Theory, Innovation and Organisation: A Model of Managerial Competencies illustrates the organisational conditions of innovativeness, which is the relationship between strategy, structure, organisational culture and leadership and knowledge management and innovation management. The developed model can undoubtedly be considered the author’s pioneering contribution to the studies of managerial competencies and innovativeness. The book will be valuable to researchers, students, and managers in the fields of leadership, organizational studies, innovation management, and human resource management.

Book excerpt: Get the latest research on new ways to measure innovation in the tourism value chain Until now, most available research on innovation in tourism product service and development has focused on concepts, rather than facts. Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism presents empirical studies that identify the major push and pull factors of innovation in hospitality and tourism, providing vital information on how to measure innovation in the control and sustainable management of new service development. This unique book examines the internal and external drivers of innovation in the market place, the difference between innovative firms and those that merely follow trends, and explanations and examples of innovations in special areas of the tourism value chain. With hospitality markets saturated and clients selecting services from all over the world, it’s not enough to have an innovative idea for a new tourism productyour idea has to have the potential to be successfully marketed. Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism looks at methods of measuring the market-based applications of new processes, products, and forms of organization, the economic impact of innovation, innovation as a bipolar process between market and resources, and forms of cooperation that can strengthen and reinforce innovation. The book’s contributors analyze the relationship between welfare services and tourism in Denmark, the innovation potential throughout the tourism value chain from the supply side focus, innovation as a competitive advantage in Alpine tourism and in the small- and medium-sized hotel industry, tourism innovation statistics across products, providers, markets, and geopolitical regions, and a case study of AltiraSPA, a wellness concept of the ArabellaSheraton group.
