Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is already known? Since the advent of modern economy and globalization, leadership has more often been linked to effectiveness and efficiency in promoting organizational performance and profits (Nahavandi, 2000), and is rarely considered in relation to wisdom (Srivastva & Cooperrider, 1998). But in present years, the construct of wisdom is viewed as a key leadership component in any organizational setting, be it business, government or academic institution. While a significant number of empirical investigations have examined the dynamics of various types of leadership such as transformational, charismatic, ethical and visionary leadership styles among others, few attempts have been made about wise leadership. Though such leadership style has been investigated in the field of business, its value in the realm of school leadership has yet to be seen and appreciated. The identified gap in the literature asks for further investigation of wise leadership behaviors of school principals, especially in the Philippine educational setting. Understanding the multiple layers of wise leadership as a human experience calls for a thorough examination of how leaders integrate wisdom in their leadership practice. It will also help us understand the factors that promote its development and the benefits that can be derived from it. What this paper adds? Anchored on the mixed method perspective, this paper provides on the one hand, an empirical data via Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), of the impact of contemporary leadership styles on wise leadership development among school principals, thus providing school leaders with a wise leadership framework that could be used as basis in the design and development of leadership programs and activities. On the other hand, employing phenomenology as a research design for the qualitative approach, this paper afforded the emergence of first, the Maze of Wise Leadership, which describes the school principals' views and experiencesof the pathways to wise leadership development featuring the different leadership realms or spaces that they have to go through, namely: landscape, seascape, peoplescape and lifescape. Second, this inquiry yielded interesting features that collectively describes the consciousness of school principals through the emergence of the COR (Consciousness, Organizational Benefit and Role) Continuum of Wise Leadership Effects, which offers a means to understand the benefits that the practice of wise leadership brings to the organization. Third, from the findings of the study, a Wise Leadership Scale (WLS) is proposed. WLS intends to measure how often leaders, like the school principal integrate wisdom in their everyday practice as observed by the people they are working with. Finally, this paper deduced the E.N.R.I.C.H. Principles on the practice of Wise Leadership in the school setting. These principles could guide school principals in making wisdom integral to their leadership journey.

Download or read book The Determinants of Leadership written by Fei Su and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the determinants of leadership in East Asia, emphasizing the significance of followership in the success and failure of leadership projects proposed by China, Japan, and the United States. While doing so, it answers a central question in the field of international relations: Why do potential leader countries succeed in obtaining potential followers in some instances, but fail to do so in other instances? Employing an inclusive leadership and societal approach, the book investigates how the leading countries motivate followership in East Asian economic and security dynamics. It analyzes how Chinese, Japanese and American leadership obtained acceptance from potential followers, focusing on the significance of domestic politics of potential follower countries in shaping their governmental preferences and generating followership. The book features empirical evidence in six case studies, covering topics such as the successful Chinese endeavor of South Korea joining the Chinese initiative for the Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank (AIIB), the failed US attempt to prevent South Korea from doing so, the US's success to convince Japan to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the failed Japanese strive for winning South Korea's support for Japan’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC), the Chinese failure at obtaining the Philippines’ backing of the Chinese aspirations in the South China Sea (SCS) during the Aquino Presidency, and, finally, the Chinese success one the same effort during the Duterte presidency. The book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of international relations interested in a better understanding of leadership determinants in East Asia, Global Power Shift, foreign policy, as well as East Asian economic and security dynamics.
