Book excerpt: Various analyses of factors that have contributed to the success or failure of economic organizations, institutions and even of whole social structures usually lead to those persons who are at the top. Regardless of the character, specific context, and organization type, the results gained are primarily due to these leaders. A able observer while looking at children's way of acting and while studying their behaviour is able to comment shrewdly on their characters, views, and hierarchy of values as well as on the rules adopted and behaviour reinforced at their homes. Likewise, from observing employees' conduct, one can infer a great deal about those persons in the top level of management, who are responsible for creating the vision and the organizational culture. I have had the opportunity to see the functioning of various companies on five continents and I have always found it fascinating how the personality, qualifications possessed and values shared by leaders influence their action and the long-term expansion of their companies. Also, my interests over many years and my research in the area of building quality in a total dimension have led me to focus on the problem of the kind of leadership that forms one of the pillars of TQM.This subject appears to be especially interesting also due to its surprisingly holistic character. It is pursued by various economists, political scientists, sociologists, psychologists and even by philosophers.

Book excerpt: Leadership Mosaics Across Japan is part of the nine research reports, put together by Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI), each covering an Asian country. These reports develop insights and solutions that help companies in Asia to build global leaders. Leadership Mosaics Across Japan is HCLI’s focus on Japan. Comprising two key sections, the first describes the prevalent characteristics that Japan business leaders tend to display and how they may need to adapt for the future. The second section turns the spotlight on Japan’s emerging leaders, and how they can make the next leap to become global leaders. As a practical takeaway, this report also includes a cheat sheet to help new foreign leaders in Japan hit the ground running. Leadership Mosaics Across Japan would not be possible without the support of many contributors. HCLI expresses its sincere gratitude to the C-suite (or equivalent) leaders who gamely agreed to be interviewed. Their insights, shared through honest and in-depth conversations, were invaluable in drawing out a more intricate mosaics of Japan leadership, both of its present and future, and of the incumbents and the emerging leaders. As Leadership Mosaics Across Japan continues to weave, validate, and event challenge what we know of business leadership in Asia, HCLI hopes that it will truly help companies in Asia build global leaders.

The answers are both common sense - operational effectiveness and CEO leadership - and Japan specific - break with traditions. The lessons about leadership, in particular, have wider relevance for leaders, managers, consultants and academics.' - Andrew Campbell, Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, UK Transformational CEOs questions why some Japanese firms succeeded in the 1990s despite an economy that failed - regardless of the burst of the 'bubble' economy, a number of Japanese companies have maintained or extended their international leadership in particular sectors. The authors argue that whilst some of the reasons for successes are plain common sense - operational effectiveness and superior CEO leadership - some are Japan-specific and point to a break with traditional leadership rationale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widening gap between the requirements of multinational organizations and the strategic and managerial abilities of their leaders, many of whose core experiences predated the globalization of business, has created the need for this book. Editors Mark E. Mendenhall, Torsten M. Kühlmann, and Günter K. Stahl have organized the results of their research—and that of their colleagues in the fields of leadership development, international management, and organizational psychology—for the benefit of scholars and practitioners alike. After surveying current practices to bring the reader up to speed on global leadership development as pursued by the United States, Germany, Japan, and with regard to women in leadership positions, the book's focus shifts to a discussion of effective organizational processes. In the third and final section, contributors analyze the research that has been done on extending human resource management functional practices—such as selection instrumentation, the use of assessment centers, multinational work groups, cross-cultural training programs, and repatriation policies—to global leadership development. The editors define and analyze global leadership and, in their review of the research, clarify exactly what we know and don't know about developing global leadership skills and what it might be profitable to learn. Practitioners will benefit from the contributors well-grounded insights into such issues as the key distinctions between global and domestic corporations, which dimensions of competency transcend internal corporate leadership dimensions, and how global leadership competencies should be developed.

They face the requirement of meeting the needs and expectations of a diverse set of stakeholders. They are increasingly called upon to protect, preserve, and restore the resources of the environment. They are expected to improve human well-being and social equity and recognize and effectively address economic and social issues concerning equality, social justice, and human rights protection. How should leaders in global organizations go about meeting the multiple demands of a complex global stakeholder environment? This book explores the dilemmas, paradoxes, and opportunities that leaders in global organizations of all types confront daily and addresses how managers can and should think about and approach these complex issues in responsible and productive ways. This book will be of interest to students and scholars across business, management and the social sciences more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of political tensions and rising economic interdependence between Japan and China, this book studies how Japanese multinational companies try to minimize damages and manage their own fear and uncertainty to sustain their business interests. Using a qualitative approach, including over 150 interviews with Japanese and Chinese business and industry leaders, combined with statistical analysis of unique firm-level data, this book brings a ‘firm-level view’ to this crucial case of political conflict amid economic interdependence. It argues that there is wide variation in the degree of material damages Japanese multinationals sustain in the aftermath of political disputes, and how threatening they perceive the risks of political conflict to be. This book then goes on to evaluate the different responses to risk, from promoting Japan's culture through privately funded tactics and building common cause with the government, to diversifying a portion of assets abroad and even leaving China entirely. Presenting a new angle on economic globalization in the Asia Pacific region, Risk Management Strategies of Japanese Companies in China will be useful to students and scholars of Asian politics, business, and economics as well as international political economy.
