Book excerpt: The purpose of this grounded theory study was to understand the process of leadership identity development experienced by traditional-aged female undergraduate college students. The findings led to a model for leadership identity development consisting of four phases. In Phase 1: Awareness and Exploration, students viewed leadership as external to themselves instead of something to which they aspired. In Phase 2: Leader Identified, students equated leadership with a title or position and saw themselves as leaders only when they were elected to a position. In Phase 3: Leadership Differentiated, students understood that leadership could derive from any source regardless of a position, yet they continued to see themselves as leaders because of their positions. In Phase 4: Generativity, students understood their responsibility to develop others as leaders. In this phase some students also realized a need to address change, specifically with regard to societal views of women and people of color. In the early phases of the model, the female students in this study saw gender as irrelevant to them as leaders even though they recognized societal views of female leaders as weaker or less capable. In later phases they understood how being female mattered, and by Phase 4 they recognized a need to take a stand on societal issues related to gender and race. This study provides valuable insights on the development of female student leadership identity to help leadership educators and student affairs professionals construct intentionally designed programs, yet much remains to be learned.

The higher education research literature focuses on the leadership development of White males primarily, without examining the Experiential Learning component of a college education with regard to leadership outcomes. Most studies on leadership in higher education use a quantitative approach with leadership survey instruments. Using an interpretive research paradigm and building on previous research literature examining leadership identity in college students, the researcher asked six female college graduates about the role of Experiential Learning in their leadership identity. The students' four year-end legacy papers from their leadership program were examined as well. The data revealed that Undergraduate Leadership, Volunteer Service, Study Abroad, and Internships had a positive impact on leadership outcomes for the participants. Ultimately, this study revealed that this style of learning did facilitate leadership identity in female students who might not otherwise have reached full leadership identity due to their initial perceptions of leaders as being central, positional, and authoritative rather than approaching leadership as shared, collaborative, and relational."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Although concepts of leadership have been explored throughout student development literature, there remains a lack of research on the process by which an undergraduate student develops a leadership identity. The Leadership Identity Development (LID) model was created using grounded theory research to provide guidance on this development process. Various studies have used the LID model as a theoretical framework to explore the leadership identity development of specific populations of undergraduate students including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students and Hispanic female students. Asian/Pacific Islanders (API) are the second fastest growing racial population in the United States and most reside in California, however, less than 1% of research articles in the most popular peer-reviewed journals of higher education pertain to API students, few of those pertaining to API leadership. This comparative case study utilized the LID model to better understand the leadership identity development of twenty API undergraduate female students in Southern California. Data analysis of the qualitative interviews revealed the women experienced leadership identity development trajectories that followed the progressive stages of the LID model. The influences of the participants' Inner Circles, Outer Circles, and Environmental Circles were critical to their leadership development. Additionally, the women developed personal styles of leadership that emphasized advocacy, care, and service, further proving that API women develop leadership identities in unique ways.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this narrative case study was to explore the lived experiences of four Black undergraduate collegiate women leaders in higher education in their third and fourth years of study in a predominantly White Midwestern institution. This qualitative study was conducted with purposeful and criterion-based sampling. The participants selected needed to be at least a student leader in a registered student organization at one time during their collegiate career. Narrative inquiry was used to explore the participants' racialized, gendered, and leadership identity development prior to college and throughout the course of their collegiate careers. The participants' narratives were organized using Bildungsroman format, or as a coming of age story. Findings indicate that although the participants identified as Black women and Black women student leaders, their racialized identity was much more salient than their gendered identity. Therefore, outside of biological markers like menstruating and becoming mothers, they were not able to articulate the development of their intersectional identity. Findings also show the participants had a certain amount of self-confidence and critical self-awareness that allowed them to succeed even when faced with racialized and gendered discrimination as individuals and within their roles as student leaders. Such obstacles contributed to their ability to just do when faced with challenges regardless of the difficulty level of the challenge. The study raises implications about the multitude of support systems that Black women and girls have upon entering college. Another implication is the amount of invisible labor that Black women as collegiate leaders do in order to support their fellow peers. Finally, this study raises implications about the deficit narratives that depict Black women's and girls' stories within education. Thus, this study presented a counternarrative to the traditional, negative, and stereotypical narratives that are untrue and detrimental to the racialized, gendered, and leadership development of Black women and girls within and beyond the education system.

More inquiry into this condition is needed to determine if this filter is detectable in all stages or in all categories. Limitations to the study and suggestions for future research are included.

Book excerpt: As the study of leadership evolves, it is vital to consider adult development; specifically student leadership development. This study examined changes over time in undergraduate students' leadership self-efficacy, leader identity, and socially responsible leadership capacity. As a component of motivation to learn, curiosity breadth and depth were included to explore how the "positive approach to new information" relates to individual leader growth. This research helps explain how leader identity fits into a student leader development model as an outcome and as a contributor to future leader identity growth and engagement with leadership tasks. A combination of longitudinal and cross-sectional designs was used to study student leadership capacity development due to participation in a structured semester-long leadership development program that was based on student-specific theoretical models. Participants in the program and a control group of similarly-aged students from a mid-sized comprehensive university completed surveys at three time points over a six-month period. Past participants in the program and a senior-level control group completed a single survey approximately two years following the past participants' completion of the leadership development program. The extent to which students describe themselves as leaders and the certainty with which they perceive themselves as leaders contributed the most to their growth over time. Students who enter college with a higher level of leader identity may have a tendency to grow at a higher rate in that identity throughout college. Citizenship and depth of curiosity may play a role in leader identity development. Students higher in consciousness of self, citizenship, and breadth of curiosity are more inclined to engage in personal leadership tasks. Recent and past program participants showed greater differences in levels of leadership self-efficacy, leadership self-identity, and leader identity stage than the control groups. Results partially supported existing research that leadership development programs produce growth in students' leadership capacity and leadership self-efficacy. In addition, results indicated that early development of leader identity is an integral part of the overall picture of leadership capacity, adding specificity to the body of literature related to college student leadership development. New paths of inquiry were provided for practitioners and scholars.
