The processes of selection, nature and constitution of leadershp, internal procedures and democratic processes of these organisations are critically examined and reveal a poor culture of internal democracy and ethos. Strengthening this capacity is a central message. The case studies are on South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Zambia.

In the post-colonial, post-apartheid, neo-liberal new South Africa poor and marginalised citizens continue to struggle for land, housing and health care.
