Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between principal leadership style and climate as perceived by teachers. Eleven elementary schools and 275 teachers participated in this study. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) assessed teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership styles. The Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire - Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE) obtained climate data, measured as Open, Closed, Disengaged, and Engaged. Demographic data consisted of five categories: (a) Gender, (b) Years teaching, (c) Years with current principal, (d) Level of Education, and (e) SES and Star rating of each school. An analysis, utilizing Pearson's r correlations, indicated relationships existed between the five LPI and the six OCDQ-RE subscales for principal and teacher behavior. When teachers perceived exemplary principal behaviors, their perception of Collegial and Supportive climate indicators were very high and Disengagement low. Conversely, when teachers perceived low principal behaviors, their perceptions of Collegiality were low with high Restrictive climate indicators and high Disengagement. An analysis, utilizing MANOVA, indicated teachers who spent zero to two years with the principal or spent greater than six years with the principal perceived their principals in a similar manner. Teachers who spent three to five years with the principal scored the principal lower. An analysis of the SES and Star rating of the school indicated teachers from high SES schools with satisfactory achievement scored their principals higher than teachers from high SES schools with high achievement on four LPI subscales and one OCDQ-RE subscale. Findings support the proposition for continued research in the area of school climate and principal leadership.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Effective leadership behaviors are imperative in contributing to student achievement and the overall culture of a school. School leaders must mold the culture of the school in order to create an environment which is conducive to learning. Studies on school leadership and student achievement have highlighted the evidence of school leadership behaviors which contribute to student achievement. The purpose of this investigation studied the extent of school leadership behaviors and or characteristics that contribute to student achievement. This study was designed to identify the relationship between the behaviors of the school leader and student achievement. The study determined if teachers and principals perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. More specifically, this investigation was designed to study the behaviors and practices of elementary principals as it relates to student achievement in elementary school students in a large urban school district. Sixty-three elementary teachers and six principals were selected for this study. The six principals were apart of the focus group interview. Data was collected through teacher and principal surveys, audio-taped interviews and transcriptions. SPSS 13.0 was selected as a means to interpret and analyze data. 2 The results of the study support the literature and indicate that principal leadership is critical to student achievement in elementary school students. More specifically, it raised the question about what specific leadership behaviors are used to increase student achievement. This study further clarified that the principal is the primary person for instituting leadership among all within the school which ultimately contribute to student success. The elementary principal has a demanding and challenging job in and of itself, but by recognizing the leadership behaviors, the principal can influence the climate, productivity, effectiveness of their school and ultimately student achievement.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Servant leadership is an approach to leadership that holds promise in the school setting because of the nature of the principalship. The current educational climate created by the No Child Left Behind Act, funding cuts, and principal shortages increases the importance of leadership within the schools. Utilization of the approach has been reported in business, but it was less clear if school leaders by practice model servant leadership in elementary schools. The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to determine the extent that elementary school principals in Southwest Georgia participated in the servant leadership model. The researcher administered a Likert-scale survey, Self -Assessment of Servant Leadership Profile (SLP), developed by Page and Wong, to 61 elementary principals within the Southwest Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency area. Survey return rate was 55%. The researcher also conducted follow-up interviews with six randomly selected principals who returned their survey. Fifty-percent of the principals were engaged in the servant leadership model as self-reported. The results indicated that they possessed the desirable attributes of a servant leader found in the conceptional framework designed by Page and Wong. Follow-up interviews reinforced the survey results obtained through a 55% return rate from the research sample. Ninety-five percent of the principals reported they were engaged in six of the seven factors of the SLP. Principals perceived themselves as engaged in Open, Participatory Leadership, Authentic Leadership, Courageous Leadership. Developing and Empowering Others, Inspiring Leadership, and Visionary Leadership (mean> 5.60). The scores in the area of Pride and Power (mean of 2.55) indicated that there were mixed practices among principals within this factor. The researcher used descriptive analysis of the mean scores of each of the seven factors within the categories of demographics of ethnicity; age; degree; gender; years of experience as a principal; and years of experience in present school as a principal to assess data trends. The following was found among the age demographics in Factor 2 (Power and Pride) of the SLP. Principals in the age range of 35-40 had a mean score of 1.96, whereas principals in the age range of 46-50 had a mean score of 3.07. There was a trend in the data for years of experience as a principal within each factor. The mean scores of the principals who had 16-20 years experience as a principal were lower than the principals who had 21+ years of experience for each factor of the SLP. The interviews conducted in Phase II of the study provided greater understanding of the results of the survey on the items selected from each factor. Principals seem to have varied opinions about being in the forefront at every function; delegating responsibility; bringing out the best in others; status quo; and control of subordinates. Principals agreed on the items dealing with growth of staff; appreciation of staff; staff welfare; service to others; group interests above self; empowerment; communicating enthusiasm and confidence; articulating a sense of purpose and direction; and doing the right thing. Barriers to the practice of servant leadership emerged from the interviews and included: trust; power relations; lack of emphasis on collective growth; communication problems; and paternalism.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Principals of elementary schools continue to be required to perform many duties which include administrative and instructional tasks. The increased accountability for all students to achieve, including the lower achieving students, has made principals focus on their leadership behaviors and practices. Researchers of various studies on principal leadership behaviors and student achievement have found that leadership behaviors make a difference in the academic achievement for all students. Researchers also found that the principals most important role is that of an instructional leader. Principals leading elementary schools with at risk learners may assist them academically when effective strategies, programs, and organizational structures are present within the school. The demands and the complexity of the role of the principal in the 21st century make the principals job a hard task, especially when leading schools with majority at-risk students. The legislation of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 obligates elementary principals to reflect on their best leadership behaviors and practices to encourage all students to succeed. Using a qualitative, phenomenological research design, the researcher explored the common leadership behaviors of six Georgia elementary principals of high 2 performing, high poverty schools. The phenomenological research design was appropriate for this study because it provided a means for exploring the lived experiences of the elementary principals leadership behaviors in a high performing, high poverty school. The collection of data was obtained from interviews, school observation, and school artifacts. Six common themes and patterns emerged from the qualitative research study: (1) monitoring of teachers educating at-risk learners, (2) gathering and analyzing student achievement data, (3) instructional decision making using a leadership team approach, (4) appropriate use of reading resources and materials, (5) a positive school climate, and (6) an effective staff of teachers. The six common themes and patterns were identified as common leadership behaviors of Georgia elementary principals from high performing, high poverty schools.

"The Relationship Between Leadership Skills of Elementary School Principals and School Climate." Unpublished Doctoral Thesis, University of Houston, May, 2013. Abstract As state and federal accountability standards demand that schools show adequate progress for school improvement, principals have found it more difficult to find the time and resources needed to adequately focus on school culture and climate. The purpose of this descriptive statistics study was to determine the relationship between elementary school principals' leadership skills and school climate. Perceptions of school leadership and school climate were measured by an employee perception survey developed within a large, diverse, suburban district in the state of Texas. The data were collected from elementary school campuses with varying demographics, located within the same school district. The design of the research involved descriptive statistics and frequencies to investigate the possible relationship between perceived school climate and perceived principal leadership skills. The intent of this descriptive statistics study was to clarify educators' understanding of important phenomena by identifying relationships among variables, school climate, and leadership skills. As previous researchers have related school climate to principal leadership and behaviors (Bulach, Booth, & Pickett, 1998; Peterson, 1990), this research concurred that there is, indeed, a relationship between the leadership skills of the principal and the school's climate. This study was significant because the behaviors of the building principal have been linked to the school climate, thus telling practitioners that effective leadership is critical. In order to develop a climate of autonomy, cohesiveness, adequate communication, and focused goals, principals must develop leadership skills focused on respect, instructional leadership, effective communication, shared decision making, and valuing the contributions of others.
