Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Management Styles, grade: 10.00, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to determine the impact of leadership styles on the business. Specifically, the paper is aimed at defining the relationship between the leadership style and a certain unit performance. To this objective, the first chapter introduces the reader to the leadership concept, shows its importance in the daily life and its correlations with the HR field. The theoretical insights into the leadership phenomena and its effects on the business are provided by the paper’s state of the art. Subsequently, the chapter of methodology presents the objective of the research and briefly the chosen company that the study is conducted on. It also defines the variables and describes the process of data collection and the participants. The chosen company is NN Group Romania, specifically, the NN subsidiary in Brasov, from which one of its units was empirically analysed. The analysed leadership styles are transformational and transactional types as I consider them to be the fundamentals of the styles. They serve as independent variables in the study. The SPSS software tests these variables for a potential correlation with the dependent variable, which is unit performance. The data was provided by twelve participants, consisting of one leader and eleven followers, who answered an online survey constructed in Sosci Survey. Further, the chapter of practical approach starts with the explicit description of the company. Moreover, in order to generate numerical values for describing the relation between the variables, a linear regression model was implemented and interpreted. This chapter ends with recommendations to the company after proving that there are two positive correlations between the leadership styles and the unit performance in the chosen unit of NN Romania. Both transformational and transactional leadership influence the unit performance, and thus they have a positive impact on the business. Eventually, the conclusion of this paper summarizes the most significant concepts and findings as well as offers a personal perspective on the study.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This research project explores the predominant leadership characteristics among community college presidents as measured by Bass and Avolio's transformational leadership continuum, the degree of collective teacher efficacy among faculty, and any correlation that exists between them. The populations studied are the presidents and faculty of community colleges in Alabama. Two instruments were employed, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) developed by Bass and Avolio (1995) and Goddard's CE-SCALE (2000, 2002), as a measure of collective teacher efficacy. The researcher found evidence of mid-range collective efficacy scores among faculty and strong evidence of pervasive transformational leadership characteristics among college presidents. The researcher also found a positive correlation using Spearman coefficients between the degree of transformational leadership characteristics and the degree of collective teacher efficacy among four of the five dimensions of transformational leadership on the leadership continuum. Correlation was most pronounced for Idealized Influence (Behavior), which centers on the fact that transformational leaders communicate their most important values and sense of purpose to followers, a characteristic that promotes a collective and cohesive view of institutional purpose. Although a slightly negative correlation was found for Idealized Influence (Attributes), modest positive correlations were also found for Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individual Consideration.

Incompetent leadership is everywhere, and there's no denying that most of these leaders are men. In this timely and provocative book, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic asks two powerful questions: Why is it so easy for incompetent men to become leaders? And why is it so hard for competent people--especially competent women--to advance? Marshaling decades of rigorous research, Chamorro-Premuzic points out that although men make up a majority of leaders, they underperform when compared with female leaders. In fact, most organizations equate leadership potential with a handful of destructive personality traits, like overconfidence and narcissism. In other words, these traits may help someone get selected for a leadership role, but they backfire once the person has the job. When competent women--and men who don't fit the stereotype--are unfairly overlooked, we all suffer the consequences. The result is a deeply flawed system that rewards arrogance rather than humility, and loudness rather than wisdom. There is a better way. With clarity and verve, Chamorro-Premuzic shows us what it really takes to lead and how new systems and processes can help us put the right people in charge.

The problem was that the school’s day-to-day running is vested in the principal. Curriculum implementation at the school level is monitored, supervised, and evaluated by the principal. The principal may adopt different leadership styles to undertake these duties. In turn, these activities' success or failure may affect the school's functioning, hence the student's performance in national examinations. Therefore, it is necessary to establish whether there is a clear link between the principal's leadership and the students' Performance. The research questions were: What are the instructional leadership roles that can cause poor Performance on learners? What are the principal instructional leadership management strategies that enhance learners' Performance? What are the challenges facing principals during the school leadership at the workplace? What is it that can be done to improve the principals' leadership and enhance students' performance? This was a mixed approach that combined both the qualitative approach done through the interviewing process. The analysis was executed by deploying NVivo Software. The quantitative approach was made through the deployment of the questionnaire as a collection data gathering instrument. The analysis was executed by deploying SPSS Software and Statistica. The key finding was that the following constructs were identified as ones that need improvement in practical approaches in facilitating effective performance. The emotional intelligence, e-learning, stability and control, participation and openness all had a maximum of four which denotes that the ratings were terrible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although leadership theories have evolved to reflect changing social contexts, many remain silent on issues of equity, diversity, and social justice. Diversity and Leadership, by Jean Lau Chin and Joseph E. Trimble, offers a new paradigm for examining leadership by bringing together two domains—research on leadership and research on diversity—to challenge existing notions of leadership and move toward a diverse and global view of society and its institutions. This compelling book delivers an approach to leadership that is inclusive, promotes access for diverse leaders, and addresses barriers that narrowly confine our perceptions and expectations of leaders. Redefining leadership as global and diverse, the authors impart new understanding of who our leaders are, the process of communication, exchange between leaders and their members, criteria for selecting, training, and evaluating leaders in the 21st century, and the organizational and societal contexts in which leadership is exercised.

The Oxford Handbook of Leadership and Organizations brings together a collection of comprehensive, state-of-the-science reviews and perspectives on the most pressing historical and contemporary leadership issues - with a particular focus on theory and research - and looks to the future of the field. It provides a broad picture of the leadership field as well as detailed reviews and perspectives within the respective areas. Each chapter, authored by leading international authorities in the various leadership sub-disciplines, explores the history and background of leadership in organizations, examines important research issues in leadership from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, and forges new directions in leadership research, practice, and education.
