Book excerpt: A practical guide for the beginner. A resource of tips and ideas for the experienced song leader. Answers a host of questions -- -- How do I select an appropriate song? -- Can I keep the group I'm leading in rhythm and on tempo? -- What if I'm nervous? -- How important is beating with my hand? -- May I copy a song from a copyrighted collection so I don't have to buy a whole book? -- How can I make singing come alive in my church, whether it's traditional or contemporary? -- Includes a selection of observations by musicians Kenneth Nafziger, Philip Clemens, and Wilbur Miller. Since 1970 Lehman has held positions in church music leadership including organist, choir director, consultant, and arranger. Lehman has founded several music groups: in 1978 the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Chamber Singers; in 1987 the Table Singers, a choir which explores 20th century Mennonite singing styles and hymnals. Most recently he founded the Foresingers, an ensemble of singers and instrumentalists which specialize in 16th-18th century Mennonite music. Glenn Lehman lives with his wife, Dorcas, and their two children in Leola, Pennsylvania. He is the executive director of Harmonies Workshop, a nonprofit music organization, which helped support the writing of this book.

Book excerpt: Everyone worships. But Jesus tells us that God is seeking a particular kind of worshiper. In True Worshipers, a seasoned pastor and musician guides readers toward a more engaging, transformative, and biblically faithful understanding of the worship God is seeking. True worship is an activity rooted in the grace of the gospel that affects every area of our lives. And while worship is more than just singing, God’s people gathering in his presence to lift their voices in song is an activity that is biblically based, historically rooted, and potentially life-changing. Thoroughly based in Scripture and filled with practical guidance, this book connects Sunday worship to the rest of our lives—helping us live as true worshipers each and every day.

Book excerpt: "Where lies the boundary between meaning and sentiment? Between memory and nostalgia? America and Americana? What is and what was? Does it move?" --Donovon Hohn, A Romance of Rust Part travelogue, part cultural criticism, part music appreciation, It Still Moves does for today's avant folk scene what Greil Marcus did for Dylan and The Basement Tapes. Amanda Petrusich outlines the sounds of the new, weird America—honoring the rich tradition of gospel, bluegrass, country, folk, and rock that feeds it, while simultaneously exploring the American character as personified in all of these genres historically. Through interviews, road stories, geographical and sociological interpretations, and detailed music criticism, Petrusich traces the rise of Americana music from its gospel origins through its new and compelling incarnations (as evidenced in bands and artists from Elvis to Iron and Wine, the Carter Family to Animal Collective, Johnny Cash to Will Oldham) and explores how the genre is adapting to the twenty-first century. Ultimately the book is an examination of all things American: guitars, cars, kids, motion, passion, enterprise, and change, in a fervent attempt to reconcile the American past with the American present, using only dusty records and highway maps as guides.
