Book excerpt: Contaminated dredged material is sometimes placed in confined disposal facilities (CDFs) where the potential for movement of contaminants to groundwater and surrounding surface water by leaching is an important environmental concern. Column leach tests have been developed as laboratory-scale physical models of contaminant leaching in a CDF that include advective-dispersive and other mass transfer effects. Column leach tests are recommended for predicting leachate quality in CDFs containing estuarine dredged material leached by low-ionic strength water. Under the influence of decreasing ionic strength, contaminant release from estuarine dredged material is complicated by destabilization of the sediment colloidal system. These effects are better predicted with the column leach test described in this report than with the sequential batch leach test previously recommended for leach testing of freshwater sediments. This report describes procedures for conducting column leach tests and provides guidance on interpretation of results for estuarine sediments. Mathematical formulation of sorption descriptors that account for salt washout effect is also described.

Book excerpt: Laboratory studies of sediment leaching are being conducted at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The purpose of these studies is to develop laboratory tests and data interpretation algorithms for predicting leachate quality in confined disposal facilities (CDFs) for dredged material. Leachate quality predictions are needed for evaluation of potential impacts of leachate seepage on foundation soils and groundwater. Two types of laboratory leach tests are under investigation, batch and column. A sequential batch leach test is being developed to provide a short-term laboratory test that describes the distribution of contaminants between aqueous and solid phases as sediment solids are exposed to increasing amounts of water. Column leach tests are being developed as laboratory-scale physical models of contaminant leaching in a CDF. Significant progress has been made in the development of the sequential batch leach test. Research has shown that sequential batch leach tests conducted at a liquids-to-solids ratio of 4 to 1 (by weight) and a shake Contaminant mobility, Dredged material, Contaminated sediment, Leach tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man's activities in the Nation's coastal zones and waterways have served to contaminate sediments in these areas, generating concern that dredging and disposal may exert adverse effects on water quality and aquatic organisms. The long-term effects of dredged material on water quality at the disposal site remain an area of particular concern. To study the magnitude and predictability of long-term releases from dredged material, an 8-month aerobic leaching study was conducted in the laboratory. A large number of sediments (32) representing broad geographical and pollutional variation were used to ensure wide applicability of study results. Under the aerobic chemical conditions likely to prevail at aquatic disposal sites, total organic carbon, orthophosphate-P, and zinc exhibited the most consistent net releases to the water column. Very little net mass release of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), or arsenic (As) into the water column was observed regardless of the composition of the sediments. Worst case evaluation of the potential effects of contaminant releases, conducted by comparing results of this study with the most stringent water quality criteria available, indicated that sediments used in this study would not be expected to cause significant long-term water quality problems.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of a chronic sublethal sediment bioassay with the polychaete Nereis (Neathes) arenaceodentata is described. The sublethal test end point was estimated individual somatic growth rate (milligrams dry weight per day). The test was initiated with 2- to 3-week-old post-emergent juvenile worms and continued for 28 days. The potential bias due to selected nontreatment factors on polychaete survival and growth was evaluated. For example, grain size had no significant effect, whereas the number of worms placed in each exposure vessel was critical. Direct transfer from 30% seawater to salinities less than or equal 15% had a highly significant and adverse effect on survival and growth. Both survival and growth of juvenile worms may be adversely affected if test conditions involve exposures to greater than or equal 0.7 mg/L un-ionized ammonia or greater than or equal 5 mg/L hydrogen sulfide. Survival of juvenile worms to concentrations of the reference toxicant, cadmium chloride, approximating the 96-hr LC50 (5 mg/L) was used as a quality control measure. Results are expressed in control chart format analogous to methods used in analytical chemistry. Chronic, Neanthes, Sublethal, Growth, Sediment.

Book excerpt: This technical note reports and compares initial results of six genotoxicity bioassays applied to dredged sediments and describes progress toward development of a testing protocol to aid in regulatory decisionmaking when genotoxic chemicals are an issue of concern. The Long-term Effects of Dredging Operations Program work unit Genotoxicity of contaminated Dredged Material was initiated in fiscal year 1990 to develop methods for assessing the genotoxic potential of dredged sediments. The impetus driving this new research and development effort was specific regulatory language in section 103 of the Ocean Dumping Act (Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (MPRsA) of 1972) prohibiting the open-water discharge of mutagenic, carcinogenic, or teratogenic substances in other than trace amounts, and language less specific but of similar intent in section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA). pg1. Specifically, its major objectives are to provide: A general technical framwork for evaluating the environmental acceptability of dredged material management, alternatives (open-water disposal, confined (diked) disposal, and beneficial uses). Additional technical guidance to augment present implementation and testing manuals for addressing the environmental acceptability of available management options for the discharge of dredged material in both ope water and confined sites. Enhanced consistency and coordination in USAC/EPA decision making in accordance with Federal environmantl statutes regulating dredged material management.
