Download or read book With Friends Like These written by David Meren and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most enduring images of Quebec’s Quiet Revolution is of Charles de Gaulle proclaiming “Vive le Qu?bec libre!” from the balcony of Montreal City Hall. The incident laid bare Canada’s unity crisis and has since dominated interpretations of the Canada-Quebec-France triangle. David Meren demystifies this cri du balcon by looking beyond de Gaulle to Quebec’s evolving relationship with France after the war and the clash of nationalisms that resulted. By seeking to understand Quebec, Gaullist, and Canadian nationalism, Meren not only casts doubt on established interpretations of events, he also reveals how the challenge of responding to American superpower and influence shaped the triangle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion volume to Revisiting 1759 examines how the Conquest of Canada has been remembered, commemorated, interpreted, and reinterpreted by groups in Canada, France, Great Britain, the United States, and most of all, in Quebec. It focuses particularly on how the public memory of the Conquest has been used for a variety of cultural, political, and intellectual purposes. The essays contained in this volume investigate topics such as the legacy of 1759 in twentieth-century Quebec; the memorialization of General James Wolfe in a variety of national contexts; and the re-imagination of the Plains of Abraham as a tourist destination. Combined with Revisiting 1759, this collection provides readers with the most comprehensive, wide-ranging assessment to date of the lasting effects of the Conquest of Canada.

Download or read book Eté 1967 : De Gaulle, Israël et le Québec written by Collectif, and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Né à New York, Frédéric Seager a obtenu son Ph.

Book Synopsis Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa by : Andrew W.M. Smith
Download or read book Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa written by Andrew W.M. Smith and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at decolonization in the conditional tense, this volume teases out the complex and uncertain ends of British and French empire in Africa during the period of ‘late colonial shift’ after 1945. Rather than view decolonization as an inevitable process, the contributors together explore the crucial historical moments in which change was negotiated, compromises were made, and debates were staged. Three core themes guide the analysis: development, contingency and entanglement. The chapters consider the ways in which decolonization was governed and moderated by concerns about development and profit. A complementary focus on contingency allows deeper consideration of how colonial powers planned for ‘colonial futures’, and how divergent voices greeted the end of empire. Thinking about entanglements likewise stresses both the connections that existed between the British and French empires in Africa, and those that endured beyond the formal transfer of power.
Book Synopsis France in the South Pacific by : Denise Fisher
Download or read book France in the South Pacific written by Denise Fisher and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is a Pacific power, with three territories, a military presence, and extensive investments. Once seen by many as a colonial interloper in the South Pacific, by the early 2000s, after it ended nuclear testing in French Polynesia and negotiated transitional Accords responding to independence demands in New Caledonia, France seems to have become generally accepted as a regional partner, even if its efforts concentrate on its own territories rather than the independent island states. But Frances future in the region has yet to be secured. By 2014 it is to have handed over a set of agreed autonomies to the New Caledonian government, before an independence referendum process begins. Past experience suggests that a final resolution of the status of New Caledonia will be divisive and could lead once again to violent confrontations. In French Polynesia, calls continue for independence and for treatment under UN decolonisation procedures, which France opposes. Other island leaders are watching, so far putting faith in the Noumea Accord, but wary of the final stages. The issues and possible solutions are more complex than the French Pacific island population of 515,000 would suggest. Combining historical background with political and economic analysis, this comprehensive study offers vital insight into the intricate history -- and problematic future -- of several of Australias key neighbours in the Pacific and to the priorities and options of the European country that still rules them. It is aimed at policy-makers, scholars, journalists, businesspeople, and others who want to familiarise themselves with the issues as Frances role in the region is redefined in the years to come.
Book Synopsis The French Revolution in Global Perspective by : Suzanne Desan
Download or read book The French Revolution in Global Perspective written by Suzanne Desan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situating the French Revolution in the context of early modern globalization for the first time, this book offers a new approach to understanding its international origins and worldwide effects. A distinguished group of contributors shows that the political culture of the Revolution emerged out of a long history of global commerce, imperial competition, and the movement of people and ideas in places as far flung as India, Egypt, Guiana, and the Caribbean. This international approach helps to explain how the Revolution fused immense idealism with territorial ambition and combined the drive for human rights with various forms of exclusion. The essays examine topics including the role of smuggling and free trade in the origins of the French Revolution, the entwined nature of feminism and abolitionism, and the influence of the French revolutionary wars on the shape of American empire. The French Revolution in Global Perspective illuminates the dense connections among the cultural, social, and economic aspects of the French Revolution, revealing how new political forms-at once democratic and imperial, anticolonial and centralizing-were generated in and through continual transnational exchanges and dialogues. Book Synopsis The Making of Tocqueville's Democracy in America by : James T. Schleifer
Download or read book The Making of Tocqueville's Democracy in America written by James T. Schleifer and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible fully to understand the American experience apart from Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. Moreover, it is impossible fully to appreciate Tocqueville by assuming that he brought to his visitation to America, or to the writing of his great work, a fixed philosophical doctrine. James T. Schleifer documents where, when, and under what influences Tocqueville wrote different sections of his work. In doing so, Schleifer discloses the mental processes through which Tocqueville passed in reflecting on his experiences in America and transforming these reflections into the most original and revealing book ever written about Americans. For the first time the evolution of a number of Tocqueville's central themes--democracy, individualism, centralization, despotism--emerges into clear relief. As Russell B. Nye has observed, "Schleifer's study is a model of intellectual history, an account of the intertwining of a man, a set of ideas, and the final product, a book." The Liberty Fund second edition includes a new preface by the author and an epilogue, "The Problem of the Two Democracies." James T. Schleifer is Professor of History and Director of the Gill Library at the College of New Rochelle
