Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1760, the French playwright Charles Palissot de Montenoy wrote Les Philosophes – a scandalous farcical comedy about a group of opportunistic self-styled philosophers. Les Philosophes emerged in the charged historical context of the pamphlet wars surrounding the publication of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, and delivered an oblique but acerbic criticism of the intellectuals of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, including the likes of Diderot and Rousseau. This book presents the first high-quality English translation of the play, including critical apparatus. The translation is based on Olivier Ferret’s edition, and renders the text into iambic pentameter to preserve the character of the original. Adaptations are further provided of Ferret’s introduction and notes. This masterful and highly accessible translation of Les Philosophes opens up this polemical text to a non-specialist audience. It will be a valuable resource to non-Francophone scholars and students working on the philosophical exchanges of the Enlightenment. Moreover, this translation – the result of a year-long project undertaken by Jessica Goodman with six of her undergraduate French students – expounds the value of collaboration between scholar and student, and, as such, provides a model for other language tutors embarking on translation projects with their students.

Book Synopsis Literary Figures in French Drama (1784–1834) by : Ralf Kadler
Download or read book Literary Figures in French Drama (1784–1834) written by Ralf Kadler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general aim of this book is to present a study of a dramatic genre which was a significant facet of French drama in the period from 1784 to 1834 and has never before been singled out or analyzed. The striking feature of the plays of this genre is that the protagonists represent French literary figures. A casual examination of a collection of late eighteenth-and early nineteenth-century plays, many of which concern literary figures, led to the initial idea for this study. Conscientious cross-checking was sub sequently done in a number of reference works and contemporary newspapers to obtain complete coverage and to draw up a list of all the plays in which French literary figures appeared as characters. From the total number of such plays, 153 have been used as the primary source of information. They were found scattered either in different collections or as separate copies in various libraries. This source has been supplemented by use of theatrical journals and almanacs giving reviews of some of the plays which were not published.
Book Synopsis The Modern Philosopher, Letters to Her Son and Verses on the Siege of Gibraltar, by Elizabeth Craven by : Julia Gasper
Download or read book The Modern Philosopher, Letters to Her Son and Verses on the Siege of Gibraltar, by Elizabeth Craven written by Julia Gasper and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a modern edition of three fascinating and important works by Elizabeth Craven (1750-1828), an English author who lived for many years on the Continent. Craven is mainly remembered for her scandalous personal life, but deserves more serious attention. She was influenced by Enlightenment ideas and took a broad interest in the events of her time. The Modern Philosopher (1790) is a satire on the egalitarian theories of the French Revolution. The intellectual Longinius advocates equality in theory as perfectly logical, but is dismayed when his household put it into practice. Its love-plot has a happy ending. Written originally in French, it is here translated for the first time. Letters to Her Son (1784) is a book of advice on marriage that should be regarded as a pioneering feminist text. Craven boldly denounces the tyranny of husbands, the oppressive laws of the institution of marriage, and the fact that women were categorized as “a second sort of beings”. She condemns the law that gave a husband custody of the children after divorce, even if he had been violent or unfaithful. She looks forward to replacing all that with a model of marriage in which the partners are equal companions and seek happiness rather than dominance. Verses on the Siege of Gibraltar (1785) is a satirical poem concerning the battle for Gibraltar which was besieged by the French and Spanish during the American War of Independence. Military vanity, heroic posturing and weird contraptions all serve as targets for her biting wit and artful mockery. Put together, these three works demonstrate Craven’s versatility as a writer and startling modernity.
Book Synopsis Rousseau's Counter-Enlightenment by : Graeme Garrard
Download or read book Rousseau's Counter-Enlightenment written by Graeme Garrard and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that the question of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's relationship to the Enlightenment has been eclipsed and seriously distorted by his association with the French Revolution, Graeme Garrard presents the first book-length case that shows Rousseau as the pivotal figure in the emergence of Counter-Enlightenment thought. Viewed in the context in which he actually lived and wrote—from the middle of the eighteenth century to his death in 1778—it is apparent that Rousseau categorically rejected the Enlightenment "republic of letters" in favor of his own "republic of virtue." The philosophes, placing faith in reason and natural human sociability and subjecting religion to systematic criticism and doubt, naively minimized the deep tensions and complexities of collective life and the power disintegrative forces posed to social order. Rousseau believed that the ever precarious social order could only be achieved artificially, by manufacturing "sentiments of sociability," reshaping individuals to identify with common interests instead of their own selfish interests.
