Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France's Third Republic confronts historians and political scientists with what seems a paradox: it is at once France's most long-lived experiment with republicanism and a regime remembered primarily for chronic instability and spectacular scandal. From its founding in the wake of France's humiliation at the hands of Prussia to its collapse in the face of the Nazi Blitzkrieg, the Third Republic struggled to consolidate the often contradictory impulses of the French revolutionary tradition into a set of stable democratic institutions. To Be a Citizen is not an institutional history of the regime, but an exploration of the political culture gradually formed by the moderate republicans who steered it. In James R. Lehning's view, that culture was forced to reconcile conflicting views of the degree of citizen participation a republican form of government should embrace. The moderate republicans called upon the entire nation to act as citizens of the Republic even as they limited the ability of many, including women, Catholics, and immigrants, to assume this identity and to participate in political life. This participation, based on universal male suffrage alone, was at odds with the notion of universal citizenship—the tradition of direct democracy as expressed in 1789, 1793, 1830, and 1848. Lehning examines a series of events and issues that reveal both the tensions within the republican tradition and the regime's success. It forged a political culture that supported the moderate republican synthesis and blunted the ideal of direct democracy. To Be a Citizen not only does much to illuminate an important chapter in the history of modern France, but also helps the reader understand the dilemmas that arise as political elites attempt to accommodate a range of citizens within ostensibly democratic systems.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII THE WORKWOMEN OF PARIS The Jactory-worker: The journeywoman: The baker's assistant: Miscellaneous occupations: Laundresses: Florists: Needlewomen: Dressmakers: Errand-girls: Milliners The question of women's work and wages, in Paris and in all the large centres of France, is beginning to engage the serious attention of economists and sociologists. M. Jules Simon's book VOuvrihre is already out of date, and therefore inaccurate as regards work at the present time; yet it retains its interest and, though not profound, it shows conscientious study of facts. More recently, M. Paul Leroy-Beaulieu has published a book on Le Travail des femmes au XIX"" Steele, a methodical collection of facts rather than the original work of an observer of manners. Lastly, M. le Comte d'Haussonville, in his Mislres et Remides, has given us a series of social studies, and has drawn up a clear account of women's wages in Paris and the provinces--a profoundly sad revelation. In all these publications the authors generalise too freely on the subject of the workwoman. In the following pages on the workwomen of Paris, we will try not to deal with their arguments but to give a rapid sketch of the most obvious types, without attempting to exhaust a subject which must be reviewed again and again before the Government takes in hand the task of protecting these underpaid and overworked women in every possible way. There are in Paris about 135,000 workwomen of all professions, whose wages average 2.25 francs for about ten hours' work. The greater number are the ouvrieres du dehors. The ouvrieres du dehors are those who, not having the means of being their own mistresses, work away from their homes, either for the State or for companies or for private persons....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender figured significantly in the industrial, social, and political transformations of the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, Germany, and Russia. This book explores its importance during a period of radical change for the working classes, from 1800 through the 1930s. Collectively, the authors demonstrate how the study of gender can lead to a new understanding of working class history. The authors-leading historians, sociologists, and feminist scholars ask how gender meanings and relations shaped and were shaped by transformations in areas ranging from the Irish linen industry to German social policy, from the French labor movement to Britain's interracial settlements. With special attention to the importance of language and culture in social life, they show how political identities are constituted and social categories created, contested, and changed-and how gender plays a central role in this process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The World of the Paris Café, W. Scott Haine investigates what the working-class café reveals about the formation of urban life in nineteenth-century France. Café society was not the product of a small elite of intellectuals and artists, he argues, but was instead the creation of a diverse and changing working population. Making unprecedented use of primary sources—from marriage contracts to police and bankruptcy records—Haine investigates the café in relation to work, family life, leisure, gender roles, and political activity. This rich and provocative study offers a bold reinterpretation of the social history of the working men and women of Paris.

At a time when most French workers did not have the power to effect changes in the health and safety conditions of their work, the match workers succeeded. At a time when most French women were not unionised and did not pursue effective action on occupational health problems, French women in the match industry succeeded. This book, first published in 1989, examines their actions and provides the definitive account of their success.
