Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-school children have fundamentally different attitudes towards the future and attendant notions of time and space. For this reason, early childhood professionals are optimally placed to lay important foundations for young children's long term development. Children's flexibility of thought, their positive and constructive outlook on life, their sense of the continuity of time, their creativity and imagination, and their sense of personal connection with time and the future, are all qualities that should be recognized and addressed in early childhood educational programmes as a means of counteracting the difficulty youths experience in knowing what to expect in their future lives and coming to understand their roles in shaping them. Reframing the Early Childhood Curriculum offers fresh insight into: * examining futurists' and early childhood theorists' thinking of the relevance of planning for children's long term needs in early childhood * identifying the skills, attitudes and outlooks required to assist young children attending early childhood programmes in their long term growth and development * exploring the means through which these skills, attitudes and outlooks can be achieved in curriculum frameworks through specific goals and learning experiences against the background of youth and young children's views of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If cinema can be approached as poetry and philosophy, it is because of Jean Epstein. Cocteau, Buñuel (who was his assistant), Hitchcock, Pasolini and Godard, and theoreticians Kracauer, Deleuze and Rancière are directly influenced by Epstein’s pioneering film work, writings, and concepts. This book is the first in English to examine his oeuvre comprehensively. An avant-garde artist and an anti-elitist intellectual, Epstein wanted to craft moments of pure transformative cinema. Using familiar genres – melodramas and documentaries – he hoped to heal viewers of all classes and hasten social utopia. A lover of cinema as cognitive and sensorial technology, and a poet of the screen, he pushed cinematography – as photogénie – towards the experimental sublime, through daring close-ups, rhythmic montage, slow motion, even reverse motion. Polish-born, half-Jewish, and the author of a treatise on homosexuality, Epstein has been unfairly relegated to the shadows of film history. This book restores him to the limelight of interwar world cinema, on a par with Renoir, Lang, Capra and Eisenstein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time is one of the most fundamental problems facing modern scientists and philosophers: the aim of this work is to shed light on the topic from various viewpoints and thus to promote understanding among specialists from several fields, and between East and West. The first section of the volume deals with the problems of time in astronomy and physics. Among the problems under scrutiny here are the direction and the irreversibility of time and some general physical problems of time touching on questions of philosophy. The second part is concerned with problems of time in geology, biology, and psychology: the third with problems of philosophy (although these are also treated in other chapters). The concluding fourth part considers problems of time measurement. The work should make a positive contribution to interdisciplinary understanding."--inside front flap.

Book excerpt: “A brilliant work . . . A dazzling meditation on the very nature of language itself” from the world-renowned scholar and author of The Poetry of Thought (Kirkus Reviews). In his classic work, literary critic and scholar George Steiner tackles what he considers the Babel “problem”: Why, over the course of history, have humans developed thousands of different languages when the social, material, and economic advantages of a single tongue are obvious? Steiner argues that different cultures’ desires for privacy and exclusivity led to each developing its own language. Translation, he believes, is at the very heart of human communication, and thus at the heart of human nature. From our everyday perception of the world around us, to creativity and the uninhibited imagination, to the often inexplicable poignancy of poetry, we are constantly translating—even from our native language.

This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited new edition of a groundbreaking work on the impact of alternative concepts of space on modern art. In this groundbreaking study, first published in 1983 and unavailable for over a decade, Linda Dalrymple Henderson demonstrates that two concepts of space beyond immediate perception—the curved spaces of non-Euclidean geometry and, most important, a higher, fourth dimension of space—were central to the development of modern art. The possibility of a spatial fourth dimension suggested that our world might be merely a shadow or section of a higher dimensional existence. That iconoclastic idea encouraged radical innovation by a variety of early twentieth-century artists, ranging from French Cubists, Italian Futurists, and Marcel Duchamp, to Max Weber, Kazimir Malevich, and the artists of De Stijl and Surrealism. In an extensive new Reintroduction, Henderson surveys the impact of interest in higher dimensions of space in art and culture from the 1950s to 2000. Although largely eclipsed by relativity theory beginning in the 1920s, the spatial fourth dimension experienced a resurgence during the later 1950s and 1960s. In a remarkable turn of events, it has returned as an important theme in contemporary culture in the wake of the emergence in the 1980s of both string theory in physics (with its ten- or eleven-dimensional universes) and computer graphics. Henderson demonstrates the importance of this new conception of space for figures ranging from Buckminster Fuller, Robert Smithson, and the Park Place Gallery group in the 1960s to Tony Robbin and digital architect Marcos Novak.
