Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How The Golden Legend shaped the medieval imagination It is impossible to understand the Middle Ages without grasping the importance of The Golden Legend, the most popular medieval collection of saints' lives. Assembled in the thirteenth century by Genoese archbishop Jacobus de Voragine, the book became the medieval equivalent of a bestseller. In Search of Sacred Time is the first comprehensive history and interpretation of this crucial book. Jacques Le Goff, who was one of the world's most renowned medievalists, provides a lucid and compelling account that shows how The Golden Legend Christianized time itself, reconciling human and divine temporality. Authoritative, eloquent, and original, In Search of Sacred Time is a major reinterpretation of a book that is central to comprehending the medieval imagination.

Book Synopsis Le temps de l'histoire by : Philippe Ariès

Book Synopsis Questions of Tradition by : Mark Salber Phillips
Download or read book Questions of Tradition written by Mark Salber Phillips and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tradition is a central concern for a wide range of academic disciplines interested in problems of transmitting culture across generations. Yet, the concept itself has received remarkably little analysis. A substantial literature has grown up around the notion of 'invented tradition, ' but no clear concept of tradition is to be found in these writings; since the very notion of 'invented tradition' presupposes a prior concept of tradition and is empty without one, this debunking usage has done as much to obscure the idea as to clarify it. In the absence of a shared concept, the various disciplines have created their own vocabularies to address the subject. Useful as they are, these specialized vocabularies (of which the best known include hybridity, canonicity, diaspora, paradigm, and contact zones) separate the disciplines and therefore necessarily create only a collection of parochial and disjointed approaches. Until now, there has been no concerted attempt to put the various disciplines in conversation with one another around the problem of tradition. Combining discussions of the idea of tradition by major scholars from a variety of disciplines with synoptic, synthesizing essays, Questions of Tradition will initiate a renewal of interest in this vital subject.
Book Synopsis Conceptions of Time in Greek and Roman Antiquity by : Richard Faure
Download or read book Conceptions of Time in Greek and Roman Antiquity written by Richard Faure and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles is an important milestone in the history of the study of time conceptions in Greek and Roman Antiquity. It spans from Homer to Neoplatonism. Conceptions of time are considered from different points of view and sources. Reflections on time were both central and various throughout the history of ancient philosophy. Time was a topic, but also material for poets, historians and doctors. Importantly, the contributions also explore implicit conceptions and how language influences our thought categories.

Book Synopsis Pour une histoire des Alpes, Moyen Age et Temps Modernes by : Jean-François Bergier
Download or read book Pour une histoire des Alpes, Moyen Age et Temps Modernes written by Jean-François Bergier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alps, as Professor Bergier shows in this selection of his work, should not be considered an impassable barrier, nor an isolated region, but rather as an integral part of the history of Europe. The lowlanders’ typical view of the mountains as fearful heights to be crossed, and the image of those who lived there as existing in a delicate balance with nature, are part only of the story. These articles are particularly concerned with transalpine traffic, and the different routes it took in response to changing circumstances in the lands to south and north, and with the exploitation and use of mountain resources. A number aim also to identify the particularities of the mountain way of life, and its social and political organisation.
Book Synopsis L'eau, enjeux politiques et théologiques, de Sumer à la Bible by : Stéphanie Anthonioz
Download or read book L'eau, enjeux politiques et théologiques, de Sumer à la Bible written by Stéphanie Anthonioz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a corpus of royal inscriptions and literary texts, with special emphasis on those that are mythological and biblical, stretching over several millennia from the early days of Sumer to the Biblical period, in order to determine the ways in which the concept of water was used, in particular the way it functions in the political and theological ideology of the time. Three literary motifs are the object of a careful study : the crossing of water, the flood and the water of abundance. Though their study shows diversity in evolution, transmission and reception, it appears that their function is common at the heart of the Mesopotamian political theology of royal mediation.
