This report reviews the available natural analog information used in support of the Canadian concept, with particular emphasis on the disposal of used CANDU fuel. The report gives a definition of natural analogs and an overview of the various types of analogs and analog studies; describes the main components of the disposal system, including the vault, the geosphere, and the biosphere, and gives specific examples for each; and describes several comprehensive natural systems that contain a number of features and processes similar to the disposal concept and that are under study by other countries as part of their waste disposal management programs.

Book excerpt: A previous study (fiche 96-06644) assessed the long-term risk from inadvertent human intrusion into an underground nuclear fuel waste disposal facility. The study analysed four intrusion scenarios, all initiated by a drilling operation. Risk estimates used a risk conversion factor recommended by the Atomic Energy Control Board, based on recommendations of Publication 26 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. This report reassesses the risks from the human intrusion scenarios using recommendations made in later Commission publications. It uses risk factors recommended in Publication 60 to estimate the risks of cancer detriment and serious hereditary effects, and also includes, where applicable, estimates of fatalities resulting from deterministic radiation effects (as recommended in Publication 64). The results are compared to the results using the Board's risk criterion.

The Federal Environmental Assessment Review Panel has issued a set of guidelines to be used in preparing an environmental impact statement (EIS) that require the addressing of a number of microbiological factors and their potential to affect the integrity of the multiple barrier system on which the disposal concept is based. This report formulates views and positions on microbiological factors that could influence the performance of a disposal vault in plutonic rock. These include the presence and survival of microbes, biofilms, corrosion, biodegradation of emplaced materials, gas production, geochemical changes, radionuclide migration, colloid formation, mutation, pathogens, and methylation. Studies being performed to underscore and strengthen current knowledge are briefly discussed.
