Book excerpt: This significant and innovative collection explores the changing piety of townspeople and villagers before, during and after the Reformation. It brings together leading and new scholars from England and the Netherlands to present new research on a subject of importance to historians of society and religion in late medieval and early modern Europe. Contributors examine the diverse evidence for transitions in piety and the processes of these changes. The volume incorporates a range of approaches including social, cultural and religious history, literary and manuscript studies, social anthropology and archaeology. This is, therefore, an interdisciplinary volume that constitutes a cultural history of changing pieties in the period c. 1400-1640. Contributors focus on a number of specific themes using a range of types of evidence and theoretical approaches. Some chapters make detailed reconstructions of specific communities, groups and individuals; some offer perceptive and useful analyses of theoretical and comparative approaches to transition and to piety; and others closely examine cultural practices, ideas and tastes. Through this range of detailed work, which brings to light previously unknown sources as well as new approaches to more familiar sources, contributors address a number of questions arising from recent published work on late medieval and early modern piety and reformation. Individually and collectively, the chapters in this volume offer an important contribution to the field of late medieval and early modern piety. They highlight, for the first time, the centrality of processes of transition in the experience and practice of religion. Offering a refreshingly new approach to the subject, this volume raises timely theoretical and methodological questions that will be of interest to a broad audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present Chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between p- losophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the h- tory of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. So far, nine volumes have been published in this series, viz. P- losophy of Language and Philosophical Logic (Volume 1), Philosophy of Science (Volume 2), Philosophy of Action (Volume 3), Philosophy of Mind (Volume 4), African Philosophy (Volume 5), Medieval Age P- losophy (Volumes 6/1 and 6/2), Asian Philosophy (Volume 7), Philo- phy of Latin America (Volume 8), and Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art (Volume 9).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Sentiments of the Human Mind A person of ordinary intelligence would probably resent the imputation that he does not know the meaning of the term Religion; but, should he seriously ask himself the question placed at the head this chapter, he would be surprised to find how much difficulty an act and adequate answer involves. He will first think of the various systems and organisations really or nominally of a religious character, and perhaps content himself with an enumeration or an ample. If more closely pressed he may find himself greatly at a loss, and indeed may be forced to take refuge in that well-known characterisation of the Holy Ghost by an English prelate as 'a sort a something.' For, while there will be no lack of declarations, heterogeneous and contradictory as they may be, as to what a religious man or woman should believe or do, he will find much less instruction as to what religion essentially is, and what he does find will not be of a satisfactory character, since it almost invariably is en in the interest of some system or some organised body. Moreover, in the efforts which his own intelligence may make, a person will be much perplexed from a proneness of his own mind to confuse products of religion, its incidents and accidents, with its ultimate languishing characteristics. When, for instance, we speak of the christian religion we have in mind a social organisation, comprising a community of organised lies united by certain enunciated principles and by certain declared aims. But this society is not the christian religion, but rather a development of it. The religion makes the society. If there were religion there would be no church. Hence we cannot say that christian church is the christian religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
