Book Synopsis Henry James by : Jeanne Delbaere-Garant
Download or read book Henry James written by Jeanne Delbaere-Garant and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both James’s life and his literary career might be figured as a double spiral rooted at the one end in the American soil and in romanticism, contracting in its middle on contact with France and French naturalism and expanding again into the Anglo-Saxon world and into the twentieth century. The spiral—which also suggests the artist’s indirect approach to reality—strikes me as an adequate symbol for Henry James. From Bramante’s ramp in the Vatican to F.L. Wright’s in the Guggenheim Museum it has always been the favourite shape of all those who claimed greater freedom for the artist, rejected the fixity of academic rules and were convinced that art, like the spirit of man, is capable of endless progress.
Book Synopsis Mark Twain's America by : Bernard Augustine De Voto
Download or read book Mark Twain's America written by Bernard Augustine De Voto and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 1835, the birth year of Samuel Clemens, and extending through the Gilded Age, Mark Twain’s America depicts the vigorous social and historical forces that produced the creator of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Bernard DeVoto catches a people moving west: Twain’s own family drifting down the Ohio, emigrants of every stripe, the famous and the obscure. Answering genteel critics such as Van Wyck Brooks, who blamed the American frontier for stifling Twain’s genius, DeVoto shows that, in fact, Twain’s early days in Nevada and California made a writer of him. Mark Twain’s America, first published in 1932, enriched by western humor and supernatural slave lore, is an enduring work of American literary and cultural criticism.
Book Synopsis Critique 675-676-american Fiction by :
Download or read book Critique 675-676-american Fiction written by and published by Les Editions de Minuit. This book was released on 2003 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Edith Wharton written by Blake Nevius and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blake Nevius’s close analysis and appraisal of Edith Wharton’s novels and stories reveals the modernity of her fiction and shows why she should have a permanent claim on our attention. Wharton is the only American novelist who has dealt successfully and at length with the remains of traditional New York society, which barely survived the beginning of the twentieth century. She illuminated, as no other novelist of her generation was able to do, a major aspect of U.S. social history through the dramatic conflict between the ideals of the old mercantile and the new industrial societies. Nevius also argues that Wharton, next to Henry James, is our most successful novelist of manners and, along with him, helped preserve the artistic dignity of the novel This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1953.

Book Synopsis The Memory of Nature in Aboriginal, Canadian and American Contexts by : Françoise Besson
Download or read book The Memory of Nature in Aboriginal, Canadian and American Contexts written by Françoise Besson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages the reader’s interest in the relationship that binds man to nature, a relationship which makes itself manifest through certain literary or visual artefacts produced by Native or non-Native writers and artists. It ranges from the study of literatures (mainly from Canada – including Quebec and Acadia – but also from Britain, the United States of America, France, Turkey, and Australia) to the exploration of films, photographs, paintings and sculptures produced by Aboriginal artists from North America. Thanks to a relational paradigm founded on spatial and temporal enlargement, it re-imagines the critical outlook on indigenous production by instigating a dialogue between endogenous and exogenous scholars, novelists and artists, and by weaving together interdisciplinary approaches spanning anthropology, geology, ecocriticism and the study of myths. From the writings by Scott Momaday to those by Tomson Highway, from Pauline Johnson to Louise Erdrich, or from the photographs by William McFarlane Notman and Edward Burtynsky or the films by Randy Redroad to the paintings by Emily Carr, it explores art as the sedimentation of nature. It simultaneously interrogates the representation of nature and the nature of representation as a geological and generic process inscribed in the history of mankind. Without eclipsing differences and imposing a reified Eurocentric critical discourse upon indigenous productions, this volume does not colonize indigenous texts or indulge in cultural appropriation of works of art, but looks for historical, mythological or geological traces of the past; a past characterized by the intimacy between man and animal, man and rock, or man and plant, a past which is allowed to resurface through the creative and critical outlooks that are bestowed upon its subjacent or subterranean existence. It resurfaces, not as nostalgic memory but as an interactive fertilization giving the present a new life in which the non-human provides a key to the understanding of the human bond to nature.
Book Synopsis Littératures d'aujourd'hui by : Jean Bessière
Download or read book Littératures d'aujourd'hui written by Jean Bessière and published by Honoré Champion. This book was released on 2011 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
