The method consists of interpreting aerial photos taken when snow covers the forest floor and the sky is overcast. This report describes the results of a preliminary accuracy test of sampling secondary structure by interpreting aerial photos taken during winter overcast conditions. Overlapping sequential photos of previously selected plots were georeferenced, plot geometry was overlaid, photos were interpreted, and the accuracy of interpretation was determined by field checking the accuracy of tree classification was assessed by determining errors of omission and commission for each tree based on whether it was correctly defined as inside the plot and whether it was a green conifer. The accuracy of measuring crown diameters of green conifers was also assessed by direct comparison of field and photo measurements. The work includes information on materials and methods, results and discussion, the authors' conclusions, as well as recommendations.--Includes text from document.
