Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After situating the libretti in the context of French classicism, the author first discusses the prologues to the Quinault-Lully operas, then devotes a chapter to each of the libretti in which he examines such traditional literary elements as performance history, plot, characterization, and style, as well as issues more specifically related to musical theater. The concluding chapter summarizes what opera can tell us about French classicism and explores in depth some of the key theoretical issues such as representation, imitation, and recognition.

Book excerpt: Printers were powerful figures in the creation of early modern books: they determined the physical appearance of books, changed content, and even altered or eliminated the name of the author to suit their own commercial and cultural interests. These interventions encouraged the birth of modern notions of authorship, for they compelled writers, editors, and printers to confront questions of textual ownership and authority. In the publication of female authors, however, book producers had to grapple with new concerns about authority and value since female authors were few and far between and their appeal was far from guaranteed. Certainly, the novelty of female authors could represent both an economic and cultural niche for the enterprising printer, but that same novelty in a culture unaccustomed to women's literary production was also a risky investment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the way ideas and forms traveled between Britain and France during the eighteenth century, and the extent to which the circulation of ideas between the two countries could be difficult. The volume shows that this difficulty, because it was acknowledged and often thematized, contributed to an increased awareness of what was really at stake in the very concept of Enlightenment. The examination of points of contact between the two cultures-contacts that became very much the fashion in the course of the eighteenth century-helps us understand how apparently common concepts and concerns fared differently from one country to the next, while being enriched by those contacts. The conversation of aesthetic theories and artistic forms of expression between the two countries sheds interesting light on the overall confrontation of conflicting theories of power and control that expressed themselves throughout the period of complete political redistribution. The ways myths and stories, forms and theories, traveled and changed currency gives us a clearer political grasp on the whole history of exchanges, as writers and artists, encouraged or irritated by the new myth of Progress, kept putting forward nothing else but models and strategies of public and private political economy. Frederic Ogee is Professor of English Literature at the University of Paris 7-Denis Diderot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume covers 30 Pre-Revolutionary French women, providing a representative sampling of their manifold and varied contributions to intellectual and cultural history. This volume is unique in its grouping of essentially French writers from the Pre-Revolutionary period. The authors included here range from those prominent because of their social position or literary fame, to those slowly becoming part of a new canon of Old Regime women writers - authors whose works were known to their contemporaries but who have slipped into near invisibility in the following centuries until their recent rediscovery and reassessment.

Despite the current flourishing of critical attention to women poets' works, critical assessments of Renaissance temporality remain almost exclusively shaped by early modern male writers." "A reading uninformed by female poets has deprived us of a more multifaceted vision of the temporal concordia discors at work in all these poets." "In Carpe Corpus, Cathy Yandell offers original interpretations of such literary giants as Ronsard and Louise Labe, as well as lesser-known but increasingly studied poets of the sixteenth century, notably Anne de Marquets, Nicole Estienne, and Catherine des Roches. Through readings of poetry, conduct manuals, and moral treatises, this volume seeks to reconstruct the temporal landscape of early modern France."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the best-known and most prolific French women writers of the sixteenth century, Madeleine (1520–87) and Catherine (1542–87) des Roches were celebrated not only for their uncommonly strong mother-daughter bond but also for their bold assertion of poetic authority for women in the realm of belles lettres. The Dames des Roches excelled in a variety of genres, including poetry, Latin and Italian translations, correspondence, prose dialogues, pastoral drama, and tragicomedy; collected in From Mother and Daughter are selections from their celebrated oeuvre, suffused with an engaging and enduring feminist consciousness. Madeleine and Catherine spent their entire lives in civil war–torn Poitiers, where a siege of the city, vandalism, and desecration of churches fueled their political and religious commentary. Members of an elite literary circle that would inspire salon culture during the next century, the Dames des Roches addressed the issues of the day, including the ravages of religious civil wars, the weak monarchy, education for women, marriage and the family, violence against women, and the status of women intellectuals. Through their collaborative engagement in shared public discourse, both mother and daughter were models of moral, political, and literary agency.
