Les aspects des processus physico-chimiquue et bactériologiques de l'acquisition des caractères qualitatifs de l'eau souterraine ont été considérés à partir de plusieurs centaines de puits et de forages. Quatre grands faciès hydrochimiques sont mis en évidence recouvrant les grandes provinces géologiques du Tchad (eau très minéralisée) du Sokoto et du socle (faible minéralisation) de la plaine cotière et du bassin des alluvions récentes (concentrations moyennes). Nous montrons que le seul processus géologique contrôlé environ les deux tiers des variations spatioale de la chimie des eaux. Les maladies telles que l'insuffisance rénale et le cancer du foie sont corrélées significativemetn à la présence de nitrite et de sulfate ainsi qu'aux fortes minéralisations de l'eau souterraine. La dégradation de la qualité des eaux potables est liée à des contaminations anthropiques qui en milieu rural sont à l'origine des épidémies de choléra et de dysentrie. L'ensemble du travail fait appel à des modèles géostatistiques (analyses discriminantes et des facteurs, régressions et corrélations multiples, Tendances, etc.) Et à l'outil de calcul des équilibres thermodynamiques. Nous proposons une série de recommandations permettant d'améliorer à court terme la qualité des eaux potables avec en corrolaire une diminution des maladies hydriques au Nigéria
