Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never wanted to read Sir Thomas Malory's great classic, Le Morte D'Arthur. All my friends warned me against it. But it seemed inevitable -- it is, after all, one of the foundational texts of English-language fantasy literature. It's also a repetitive, nonsensical slog through jousting tournament after jousting tournament, with dozens of knights (all of whom have ridiculous names) and nearly as many damosels (most of whom Malory doesn't bother to name). It's with you in mind that I wrote this. Take it, and read it, and avoid reading the raw vintage fifteenth-century Arthuriana. In this volume, I retell Le Morte D'Arthur, book by book, chapter by chapter. As we go, I point out all Malory's continuity errors, laugh at his bizarre sexism, and make a couple of jokes along the way. This volume (#1) describes the first two books of the saga. Thrill as Arthur is conceived! Marvel at what a jerk Merlin turns out to be! Enjoy the one bit of the story that everybody knows, with a sword stuck inside something! Be amazed as Malory repeats the sword-stuck-inside-something motif twice more in this volume alone! These are tales of Arthur's early days, back before he settled down and married Guenever and had the Round Table rolled into Camelot.

Book excerpt: Dorsey Armstrong provides a new, Modern English translation of the MORTE DARTHUR that portrays the holistic and comprehensive unity of the text as a whole, as suggested by the structure of Caxton’s print, but that is based primarily on the Winchester Manuscript, which offers the most complete and accurate version of Malory’s narrative. This translation makes one of the most compelling and important texts in the Arthurian tradition easily accessible to everyone—from high school students to Arthurian scholars. In addition to the complete text, Armstrong includes an introduction that discusses Malory’s sources and the long-running debate surrounding the manuscript and print versions of the narrative. For ease of use, the text is keyed to both William Caxton’s print version and the manuscript version edited by Eugène Vinaver. A detailed index is also included.

Book excerpt: First published in 1485, Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" or "The Death of Arthur" collects together many of the known legends of King Arthur into one creative text. Beginning with his birth, "Le Morte d'Arthur" relates Arthur's rise to become the King of England and leader of the Knights of the Round Table. Drawing upon numerous historical accounts of King Arthur, Malory's work details the exploits of King Arthur against Lucius of Rome, of Sir Gareth of Orkney against the Red Knight of the Red Lands, of the quest for the holy grail, of the adulterous love affair of Tristan and Isolde, and of the rise of Sir Lancelot to the position of Arthur's most eminent knight and his ultimate betrayal which leads to Arthur's downfall. Through these tales the reader is transported back to the time of chivalry when the demands of one's honor and duty rose above all else. The influence of Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" upon subsequent retellings of Arthurian legend cannot be overstated having been utilized as a primary source for both T. H. White's "The Once and Future King" and Tennyson's "The Idylls of the King." This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by Edward Strachey.

Book excerpt: How Sir Tristram jousted, and smote down King Arthur, because he told him not the cause why he bare that shield. And if so be ye can descrive what ye bear, ye are worthy to bear the arms. As for that, said Sir Tristram, I will answer you; this shield was given me, not desired, of Queen Morgan le Fay; and as for me, I can not descrive these arms, for it is no point of my charge, and yet I trust to God to bear them with worship. Truly, said King Arthur, ye ought not to bear none arms but if ye wist what ye bear: but I pray you tell me your name. To what intent? said Sir Tristram. For I would wit, said Arthur. Sir, ye shall not wit as at this time. Then shall ye and I do battle together, said King Arthur. Why, said Sir Tristram, will ye do battle with me but if I tell you my name? and that little needeth you an ye were a man of worship, for ye have seen me this day have had great travail, and therefore ye are a villainous knight to ask battle of me, considering my great travail; howbeit I will not fail you, and have ye no doubt that I fear not you; though you think you have me at a great advantage yet shall I right well endure you. And there withal King Arthur dressed his shield and his spear, and Sir Tristram against him, and they came so eagerly together. And there King Arthur brake his spear all to pieces upon Sir Tristram's shield. But Sir Tristram hit Arthur again, that horse and man fell to the earth. And there was King Arthur wounded on the left side, a great wound and a perilous.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed biographer Peter Ackroyd vibrantly resurrects the legendary epic of Camelot in this modern adaptation The names of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Galahad, the sword of Excalibur, and the court of Camelot are as recognizable as any from the world of myth. Although many versions exist of the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory endures as the most moving and richly inventive. In this abridged retelling the inimitable Peter Ackroyd transforms Malory's fifteenth-century work into a dramatic modern story, vividly bringing to life a world of courage and chivalry, magic, and majesty. The golden age of Camelot, the perilous search for the Holy Grail, the love of Guinevere and Lancelot, and the treachery of Arthur's son Mordred are all rendered into contemporary prose with Ackroyd's characteristic charm and panache. Just as he did with his fresh new version of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, Ackroyd now brings one of the cornerstones of English literature to a whole new audience. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A lively and thought-provoking study of gender in the Arthurian community. It is at once theoretically sophisticated and highly readable, full of insightful close readings yet conscious of larger patterns of analysis."--Laurie Finke, Kenyon College Gender and the Chivalric Community in Malory's Morte d'Arthur reveals, for the first time in a book-length study, how Thomas Malory's unique approach to gender identity in his revisions of earlier Arthurian works produces a text entirely unlike others in the canon of medieval romance. Armstrong argues that issues of masculine and feminine gender identity play more critical, central roles in Le Morte d'Arthur than they do in Malory's sources or other chivalric literature. Effectively merging contemporary gender and feminist criticism with careful analysis of Malory's sources, Armstrong uncovers how gender ideals established in the early pages of the text subsequently inspire and mediate the action of the narrative; moreover, her analysis shows how such ideals become progressively more divisive and destructive as Le Morte d'Arthur moves toward its inevitable conclusion. Recent articles and essays have shed much-needed light on various individual aspects of gender in Malory's text. However, only a sustained, book-length analysis like Armstrong's can fully articulate the relationships of gender to other chivalric ideals, such as mercy and martial prowess, that become increasingly complex as the narrative progresses. This study examines not only the most frequently read portions of the Morte but also those sections that often are regarded as extraneous to the primary narrative, such as the Tristram, Gareth, and Roman War episodes. By showing how gender operates in both the well-known and the less-appreciated portions of Malory's work, Gender and the Chivalric Community demonstrates that his text possesses far more narrative unity than previously thought. Armstrong provides a sophisticated yet accessible approach to the study of gender and its relation to other chivalric ideals in Le Morte d'Arthur, offering important insights for scholars and students of medieval romance, Malory, Arthurian literature, and gender and feminist criticism. Dorsey Armstrong is assistant professor of medieval literature at Purdue University. Her work has most recently appeared in Arizona Studies in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and On Arthurian Women: Essays in Honor of Maureen Fries.
