Book Synopsis The 1906 Olympic Games by : Bill Mallon
Download or read book The 1906 Olympic Games written by Bill Mallon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the early concepts of the Olympic Games was to include "intercalated" Games every four years between the normal cycle, and to hold these Games in Athens, the ancestral home of the Olympics. In 1906 the first, and only one, of these games was held. Occurring only two years after the St. Louis Games of 1904 and two years before the London Games of 1908, the Athens Games were considered by many not to be "official"; social and political forces prevented continuation of the intercalation cycle in 1910 and later. Yet these Games were surprisingly successful and helped guarantee the survival of the modern Olympics. This book, fourth in the series on the early Olympics, presents all the data on 29 nation and city-state participants in more than a dozen events in the Athens Games. Scores and descriptions are provided, and many historical errors and omissions in other sources are corrected. Appendices include the published program for the Games, the actual schedule followed during the Games, and country-by country listings of all participating athletes.
Book Synopsis Gender Inequalities in Rural European Communities During 19th and Early 20th Century by : Polly Thanailaki
Download or read book Gender Inequalities in Rural European Communities During 19th and Early 20th Century written by Polly Thanailaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of women’s opportunities for schooling, their social activities, and the social biases they faced in rural communities in Greece, Italy and parts of the Balkans during the 19th and early 20th century. It examines such topics as female illiteracy, the efforts of women-protestant missionaries to expand knowledge through Protestantism, the prejudice against education for women, the socio-economic context, the roles women fulfilled, and the structure of the patriarchal family. The book approaches these issues from the perspective of pedagogy and social history. The fundamental questions discussed by the book are: How was female education viewed by the country folk? What was the role of women in the private and the public sphere? How did peasant women respond to the challenges of the ‘modern’ world? Were they free to express their feelings and ambitions? In what way? Were they happy?

He studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and at Stanford University in Palo Alto. He worked mostly in the semiconductor testing equipment fi eld and sold US Equipment from Russia to Tokyo. Early on he became very interested in Opera and developed his knowledge in singing from the reissues by Guy Dumazert. He currently maintains a comprehensive website on tenors (historicaltenors.com) and a YouTube channel on Historical tenors. Although his interest on Irish-French tenor John O`Sullivan dates from his early days, he fi nally started researching the tenor`s career in the early 90s after meeting O’Sullivan’s children: Jacques, Colette and Raymonde. After much work contacting the different libraries all over the world, with the Paris and Marseilles libraries being the most diffi cult to work with, he fi nally started writing the O`Sullivan biography in 2007. It is now published. He only regrets that Jacques O’Sullivan, the tenor`s son, did not live to witness the publication.

Book Synopsis Beyond 'Hellenes' and 'Barbarians' by : Kirill Postoutenko
Download or read book Beyond 'Hellenes' and 'Barbarians' written by Kirill Postoutenko and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years ago, German historian Reinhart Koselleck coined the notion of ‘asymmetrical concepts’, pointing at the asymmetry between standard self-ascriptions, such as ‘Hellenes’ or ‘Christians’, and pejorative other-references (‘Barbarians’ or ‘Pagans’) as a powerful weapon of cultural and political domination. Advancing and refining Koselleck’s approach, Beyond ‘Hellenes’ and ‘Barbarians’ explores the use of significant conceptual asymmetries such as ‘civilization’ vs. ‘barbarity’, ‘liberalism’ vs. ‘servility’, ‘order’ vs. ‘chaos’ or even ‘masters’ vs. ‘slaves’ in political, scientific and fictional discourses of Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Using an interdisciplinary set of approaches, the scholars in political history, cultural sociology, intellectual history and literary criticism bolster and extend our understanding of this ever-growing area of conceptual history.
Book Synopsis Sport in Europe by : Annette Hofmann
Download or read book Sport in Europe written by Annette Hofmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview on sport history research in Europe by giving insights into various topics between Europe ́s south and north. Examples are physical activities in the middle ages in Córdoba, bullfighting in Spain, aspects of football in various countries to winter sports in France. Football is mainly looked at in the period of the late 1930s to the 1940s, a period of dictatorship in many European countries. This is shown at the example of the German press coverage of German–Danish sport collaborations and the identity of Spanish football during this time. A further focus are the Olympic Games. This topic is taken up in two articles: One discusses as its main subject the famous painting 'Sport Allegory/The Crowing of the Athletes' created by the father of Pierre de Coubertin, the other one has a more current content and shows stakeholders and challenges of the European Youth Olympics in 2015. Besides these broad topics, a focus is put on research in sport history by reflecting on historical frameworks and various methodological approaches. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue in The International Journal of the History of Sport.
