Book Synopsis Marcel Broodthaers by : Deborah Schultz
Download or read book Marcel Broodthaers written by Deborah Schultz and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poet and artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-76) is widely recognized as a key figure in 20th century art who questioned the nature of art, the role of the artist, the functioning of the museum and of the art market. This book sets out Broodthaers's strategy for artistic success and examines the dialogue into which he entered with his contemporaries and predecessors in 19th century French poetry, Pop and Conceptual Art, including Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, Marcel Duchamp and René Magritte. It provides a broad overview of his objects, paintings, films, slides, books and installations, and his focus upon relationships, also central to Post-Structuralist and postmodern theories. The visual qualities of his works, combining the material with the poetic, his wit and irony, are examined in relation to his subtle method of questioning and contradicting, defying conventional systems and definitions. The author explores the wider framing contexts in which things are presented and the geographical context via maps, notions of the voyage and a sense of place. Institutional critique, the artist's political position and moral responsibilities in society are discussed by analyzing the responses of Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Joseph Beuys and Hans Haacke to a series of museum events in the early 1970s.

Book Synopsis A New History of French Literature by : Denis Hollier
Download or read book A New History of French Literature written by Denis Hollier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the general reader, this splendid introduction to French literature from 842 A.D.—the date of the earliest surviving document in any Romance language—to the present decade is the most compact and imaginative single-volume guide available in English to the French literary tradition. In fact, no comparable work exists in either language. It is not the customary inventory of authors and titles but rather a collection of wide-angled views of historical and cultural phenomena. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, and large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the “life and works” of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses: fleetingly, in 1701, apropos of Antoine Galland’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights; in 1898, in connection with the Dreyfus Affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church and state; in 1911, in relation to Gide and their different treatments of homosexuality; and at his death in 1922. Without attempting to cover every author, work, and cultural development since the Serments de Strasbourg in 842, this history succeeds in being both informative and critical about the more than 1,000 years it describes. The contributors offer us a chance to appreciate not only French culture but also the major critical positions in literary studies today. A New History of French Literature will be essential reading for all engaged in the study of French culture and for all who are interested in it. It is an authoritative, lively, and readable volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These fifteen essays by former doctoral students, now distinguished seiziemistes, of Francois Rigolot, Meredith Howland Pyne Professor of French Literature at Princeton University, represent a tribute to his qualities as professor, scholar, and person who embodies both a Montaignian esprit genereux and a Rabelaisian pantagruelisme . They pay homage to his renowned erudition and publications on all aspects of French Renaissance literature, his pedagogical skills, his support of students and colleagues, his leadership at Princeton University, and his inspirational personality. The balanced mixture of creative imagination, rigorous explication de texte, and delightful personal rhetoric that characterizes Professor Rigolot's scholarly works still forms a source of inspiration for his students, as is clear in this volume. Regrouping the major fields of interest in which the minds of magister and discipuli produced the most fruitful dialogues (poetry, the Renaissance au feminin, Rabelais, and Montaigne), spanning a wide variety of authors (Petrarch, Sceve, Ronsard, Cretin, Marguerite de Navarre, Louise Labe, Rabelais, Montaigne, La Boetie, and Pascal), these studies for a tribute to the extraordinary breadth of Professor Rigolot's research interests.

Book Synopsis Between Folk and Liturgy by : Fletcher
Download or read book Between Folk and Liturgy written by Fletcher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Folk and Liturgy, the title of this collection, should not be understood to refer to some fixed point, some stable place between the two extremes of an illiterate and a literate culture. Rather, the title flags the wide and colourful spectrum of medieval dramatic possibility. Perhaps except one, none of the ten essays published here deal with a drama existing purely at either end of this scale. They add to our impression of the teaming fecundity and hybridism of early European drama, an impression that grows apace once we start to consider dramas situated Between Folk and Liturgy. The geographical terrain that the essays traverse ranges from the British Isles in the west to Poland in the east. The suppleness of the approaches taken here is the minimum critical requirement of anyone wanting to do justice to so complex and multifold a phenomenon as is early European drama.
