Ces communautés ainsi créées ont pour objectifs la coopération et l'intégration économiques. C'est le cas de la Communauté Economique des Etats de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (CEDEAO), du Marché Commun de l'Afrique de l'Est et Australe (COMESA) et de la Communauté Economique des Etats de l'Afrique Centrale (CEEAC). Si la coopération est décidée dans tous les domaines de l'activité économique, l'intégration a pour but l'ouverture des marchés nationaux et la création des marchés régionaux propices aux échanges commerciaux grâce à une politique de libéralisation desdits échanges. En effet, à l'image de l'union européenne, et pour faciliter, favoriser et développer leurs échanges commerciaux, les Etats membres des trois communautés se sont engagés à supprimer dans leurs relations réciproques les barrières tarifaires et non tarifaires à la libre circulation des marchandises et à mettre en place un tarif extérieur commun dans leurs relations avec les tiers. Ils se sont également engagés à mettre en place une politique de libre circulation des personnes, des capitaux et de tous les autres facteurs de production. Ils se sont engagés enfin à adopter une politique économique, financière et sociale commune. Mais à la différence de l'union européenne, cette politique de régionalisation des échanges commerciaux dans le CEDEAO, le COMESA et la CEEAC connaît des difficultés de mise en œuvre dues à un contexte politique, socio-économique et naturel peu favorable, et au développement des échanges commerciaux informels dans tous les domaines de l'activité économique.

In a context where liberalizing trade has not produced the expected gains in developing countries and growth in global trade has not led to the expected economic growth, an alternative solution has emerged. This new paradigm suggests that trade liberalization should be accompanied by public investment. However, by its very nature, trade liberalization leads to a reduction in revenues from duties and taxes, which means that the available resources for public investments will also be reduced. There are now solid arguments for encouraging the less-developed countries to first emphasize regional integration before trying to access the global market. This book explores the issues linked to regional integration in West Africa and presents empirical data about the experiences in = West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) countries to converge their economies. It also examines how these efforts, which make a major contribution to regional integration, influence poverty reduction in the economic and monetary community. First, the concept of mobility itself is considered and how it is conceived of in distinction from sedentarity. Second, which forms of mobility can be distinguished, not only from the perspective of Western social sciences, but also from the perspective of people's own experiences, ideas, notions, etc? Social science in Africa has particularly focused on rural-urban migration, but it is clear that there are many other forms as well. In addition to 'forms of mobility' there is a 'mobility of forms' in which the perception of those other spaces plays a crucial role. In short, the book intends to turn the whole notion of mobility as a supposedly rupturing phenomenon on its head, emphasizing that rather through travelling connections are established and continuity is experienced. We are challenged to delve into the traveller's mind, to think and follow their multi-spatial livelihoods and to explore what it means to people if they move in a variety of spaces.

Mordechai Kreinin and Michael Plummer consider the implications of the emerging global trend of economic regionalism for developing countries. The analysis focuses on the trade and investment effects of integration in developed countries on developing countries, as well as the ramifications of regional integration in the latter. After an extensive review of the theoretical and empirical literature pertinent to the economics of regionalism, the book considers the ex-post trade and direct-foreign-investment effects of the Single Market Program in Europe and NAFTA, followed by chapters on ASEAN and economic integration in Latin America, primarily MERCOSUR.
