Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of management education and research has become an industry of its own an industry with fierce international competition in a global arena. Here, the authors argue that a series of mechanisms has led to mimicking and thus strategic convergence among business schools. The authors further argue that this has resulted in a loss of relevance and diversity of the management knowledge produced and taught in a multipolar world. They view this as counterproductive to business schools, students, firms, societies and other stakeholders, including scholars themselves. Based in part on the work of SFM (Société Française de Management the French Academy of Management), the authors of this volume endeavour to engage in strategic conversations with stakeholders in an effort to reshape the field of management studies. Redesigning Management Education and Research revisits the foundations of management research and education, suggests ways to redesign the content taught to better fit the needs of firms and society at large, and proposes actions and concrete examples of what could be done to restructure the institutional setting of the field of management. This book calls for collective strategies from management scholars to influence some of the de facto regulation mechanisms that have appeared over recent years, such as business school rankings and the race for publication in a narrow list of academic journals. This book is also a plea for working on those issues beyond the specificities of national contexts to encompass a broader regional perspective in order to reshape the rules of the game in management education and research. Teachers, researchers and deans, as well as practitioners from all areas of business will find this volume illuminating. It offers an ambitious vision and a practical framework aimed squarely at remaking management education and research to be relevant to the demands of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This book is the first to directly address the question of how to bridge what has been termed the "great divide" between the approaches of systems developers and those of social scientists to computer supported cooperative work--a question that has been vigorously debated in the systems development literature. Traditionally, developers have been trained in formal methods and oriented to engineering and formal theoretical problems; many social scientists in the CSCW field come from humanistic traditions in which results are reported in a narrative mode. In spite of their differences in style, the two groups have been cooperating more and more in the last decade, as the "people problems" associated with computing become increasingly evident to everyone. The authors have been encouraged to examine, rigorously and in depth, the theoretical basis of CSCW. With contributions from field leaders in the United Kingdom, France, Scandinavia, Mexico, and the United States, this volume offers an exciting overview of the cutting edge of research and theory. It constitutes a solid foundation for the rapidly coalescing field of social informatics. Divided into three parts, this volume covers social theory, design theory, and the sociotechnical system with respect to CSCW. The first set of chapters looks at ways of rethinking basic social categories with the development of distributed collaborative computing technology--concepts of the group, technology, information, user, and text. The next section concentrates more on the lessons that can be learned at the design stage given that one wants to build a CSCW system incorporating these insights--what kind of work does one need to do and how is understanding of design affected? The final part looks at the integration of social and technical in the operation of working sociotechnical systems. Collectively the contributors make the argument that the social and technical are irremediably linked in practice and so the "great divide" not only should be a thing of the past, it should never have existed in the first place.

Book excerpt: Managerial, organizational, and entrepreneurial scholars across disciplines have discussed the topic of resilience from developed economies, yet much remains unknown on its practice during modern times and the crises that have recently affected daily lives, business, and workplaces. Moreover, few experiences of economic instability have been reported from emerging countries, where global competition, economic, social, environmental, and sanitary concerns remain as real challenges. It is essential that both researchers and practitioners explore new perspectives and tools to study resilience at many diverse levels and contexts. The Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurship and Organizational Resilience During Unprecedented Times explores experiences in different managerial, organizational, and entrepreneurial issues, particularly from the perspective of emerging countries. By investigating different levels with interdisciplinary approaches and integrative frameworks, it advances new perspectives for future research. Covering topics such as employee creativity, economic crisis, and supply chain management, this major reference work is an indispensable resource for entrepreneurs, business leaders and executives, marketing managers, human resource managers, organization behavior specialists, consultants, government officials, politicians, librarians, students and faculty of higher education, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Knowledge Management is a wide, critical and strategic issue for all the com- nies, from the SMEs to the most complex organizations. The key of competiti- ness is knowledge, because of the necessity of reactivity, flexibility, agility and innovation capacities. Knowledge is difficult to measure itself but what is visible, this is the way of improving products, technologies and enterprise organizations. During the last four years, based on the experience of most of the best experts around the World, CIRP (The International Academy for Production Engineering) has decided to prepare and structure a Network of Excellence (NoE) proposal. The European Community accepted to found the VRL-KCiP (Virtual Research La- ratory – Knowledge Community in Production). As its name indicates it, the aim of this NoE was really to build a «Knowledge Community in Production ». This was possible and realistic because the partners were representative of the most important universities in Europe and also because of strong partnerships with laboratories far from Europe (Japan, Australia, South Africa, USA, etc...). Based on such powerful partnership, the main issue was to help European manufacturing industry to define and structure the strategic knowledge in order to face the strategic worldwide challenges. Manufacturing in Europe currently has two essential aspects: 1. It has to be knowledge intensive given the European demands for high-tech products and services (e.g. electronics, medicines).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The New Knowledge Management' is the story of the birth of "second-generation knowledge management," told from the perspective of one its chief architects, Mark W. McElroy. Unlike its first-generation cousin, second-generation Knowledge Management seeks to enhance knowledge production, not just knowledge sharing. As a result, 'The New Knowledge Management' expands the overall reach of knowledge management to include "innovation management" for the very first time. 'The New Knowledge Management' introduces the concept of "second-generation knowledge management" to the business community. Mark W. McElroy has assembled a collection of his own essays, written over the past four years, chronicling the development of related thinking in the field. Unlike first-generation KM, mainly focusing on value derived from knowledge sharing, second-generation thinking formally adds knowledge making to the scope of KM. In this way second-generation KM expands the overall reach of KM to include "innovation management" for the very first time. 'The New Knowledge Management' finally begins to bridge the gap between KM and the field of organizational learning, which up until now have been viewed as miles apart.
