Excerpt: ...is not of our body, but a townsman, and licensed by them to keep an inn. I have complained to the Lords about him, and hope there will be a letter go from the Board to the town to call for an account of the whole business. One of the charges against Laud, made by Prynne, the great Parliamentary lawyer, was that his chaplain, Morgan Owen, had set up images of the Virgin and Child, holding a small crucifix, over the new south porch of St. Marys, which he had built at a cost of 230Z., in lieu, it is said, of a Latin sermon. They still keep at Lambeth the very copy of Prynnes Canterburys Doom which Charles I. read, with the clear bold Bum spiro spero, C.R., written on the fly-leaf by the King himself. Hobbes notes how much the doctrine and method of the University contributed to the troubles, and Prynne had cruel wrongs to remember. In 1635 the Caroline charter confirmed the privileges of the University, and their rights over the city, notwithstanding a protest from the citizens; but Laud kept vigilant watch over the city. His History of his Chancellorship supplies full details. He got a letter from the Council, ordering the demolition of the cottages erected upon the town ditch and the town wall, the back way towards the Castle, and in the middle of the street by Trinity College gate, and near a place called Smithgate. Pulling down the cottages made Smithgate passable for coaches. And by his own proclamation he named a toll-gatherer for the market, which office hath of late times been discontinued; by reason whereof divers citizens, inhabiting in or near the corn market, have taken upon them to keep and set forth on market days public bushels and measures for the measuring of corn and grain, and take toll for the same...
Book Synopsis Law and Religious Cultural Heritage in Europe by : Theodosios Tsivolas
Download or read book Law and Religious Cultural Heritage in Europe written by Theodosios Tsivolas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail both historical and current legal concepts of ‘religious cultural heritage’ within the context of the European continent. The latter group is primarily based on the variety of sacred cultural elements emanating from the different religious traditions of the peoples of Europe, which are deemed worthy of protection and preservation due to their outstanding value, in terms of their social, cultural and religious significance. In view of this, the study provides evidence of the European States’ active involvement with their sacred/cultural treasures, on the basis of the political and legal foundations of neutrality and pluralism. Furthermore, the book analyzes all relevant international legislative instruments (i.e. the plethora of EU, EC and UNESCO norms), as well as all major European legislative patterns, in light of their significance for the aforementioned aspects of pluralism and neutrality. The interdisciplinary references listed at the end of each chapter provide an additional incentive for further reading on the subject matter. The most important finding to emerge from the study is that there is a shared legal ethos in Europe that imposes a duty of appropriate care concerning the vast variety of sacred cultural goods and the religious cultural heritage in general, as an invaluable repository of European cultural capital. It also considers the sui generis nature of this capital: like any other type of asset, it may deteriorate or fade over time, necessitating investment in its preservation or refurbishment; nevertheless, like no other, this particular capital maintains a distinct cultural value, as it contains an additional characteristic of ‘sacredness’ expressed in the form of its ‘religious character,’ the latter being analyzed as a triptych of religious memory, religious aesthetics and religious beliefs.
Book Synopsis Migrants and Religion: Paths, Issues, and Lenses by :
Download or read book Migrants and Religion: Paths, Issues, and Lenses written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the worldwide dramatic spread of religious-based discriminations, persecutions, and conflicts, both official data and academic literature have underestimated their role as a root cause of contemporary migrations. This multidisciplinary study aims to overcome this gap. Through an unprecedented collection of theoretical analysis and original empirical evidence, the book provides unique data and insights on the role of religion in the trajectories of asylum seekers and migrants – from the analysis of the religious geography of sending countries to the role of spirituality as a factor of resilience and adaptation. By enhancing both academic and political debate on these issues, the book offers the possibility of regaining awareness of the close link between religious freedom and the quality of democracy.
