Book Synopsis Evolution of Marine Coastal Ecosystems under the Pressure of Global Changes by : Hubert-Jean Ceccaldi
Download or read book Evolution of Marine Coastal Ecosystems under the Pressure of Global Changes written by Hubert-Jean Ceccaldi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal and estuarine environments at the interface of terrestrial and marine areas are among the most productive in the world. However, since the beginning of the industrial era, these ecosystems have been subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures intensified from the second half of the 20th century, when there was a marked acceleration in the warming (climate change) of the continents, particularly at high latitudes. Coastal ecosystems are highly vulnerable to alteration of their physical, chemical and biological characteristics (marine intrusion, acidification of marine environments, changes in ecosystems, evolution and artificialization of the coastline, etc.).In contact with heavily populated areas, these environments are often the receptacle of a lot of chemical and biological pollution sources that significantly diminish their resilience. In this context of accelerated evolution and degradation of these areas important for food security of many populations around the world, it is necessary to better identify the factors of pressure and understand, at different scales of observation, their effects and impacts on the biodiversity and on the socio-eco-systems, in order to determine the degree of vulnerability of these coastal ecosystems and the risks they face. A transdisciplinary and integrated approach is required to prevent risks. Within this framework, operational coastal oceanography occupies an important place but also the implementation of a true socio-eco-system approach in order to set up an environmentally friendly development.

Book Synopsis Governing Marine Protected Areas by : Peter Jones
Download or read book Governing Marine Protected Areas written by Peter Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world. A novel governance analysis framework is employed to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? The author explores the many issues that these questions raise, as well as exploring options for addressing them. A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance, as it poses some critical questions for contemporary approaches to related research and offers an alternative theoretical and empirical approach.

Book Synopsis INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER TREATMENT by : A. D. PATWARDHAN
Download or read book INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER TREATMENT written by A. D. PATWARDHAN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-05-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All industrial production processes generate waste waters, which can pollute water bodies into which they are discharged without adequate treatment. It is, therefore, essential to treat such wastes and eliminate their harmful effects on the environment. This book discusses sources, characteristics and treatment of waste waters produced in industries such as textiles, dairy, tanneries, pulp and paper, fertilizer, pesticide, organic and inorganic chemicals, engineering and fermentation. Many flow diagrams have been included to illustrate industrial processes and to indicate the sources of waste water in such processes. After describing treatment for individual factories, the author discusses the more advanced and economical common effluent plants. The text uses simple and straightforward language and makes the presentation attractive. This book should prove extremely useful to undergraduate students of civil and chemical engineering and postgraduate students of environmental science and engineering. Industrial design consultants will also find the book very handy. To the Greens, it may offer some of the solutions to their concerns.

Book Synopsis Principles of Sequencing and Scheduling by : Kenneth R. Baker
Download or read book Principles of Sequencing and Scheduling written by Kenneth R. Baker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of scheduling theory, including recent advances and state-of-the-art topics Principles of Sequencing and Scheduling strikes a unique balance between theory and practice, providing an accessible introduction to the concepts, methods, and results of scheduling theory and its core topics. With real-world examples and up-to-date modeling techniques, the book equips readers with the basic knowledge needed for understanding scheduling theory and delving into its applications. The authors begin with an introduction and overview of sequencing and scheduling, including single-machine sequencing, optimization and heuristic solution methods, and models with earliness and tardiness penalties. The most current material on stochastic scheduling, including correct scheduling of safety time and the use of simulation for optimization, is then presented and integrated with deterministic models. Additional topical coverage includes: Extensions of the basic model Parallel-machine models Flow shop scheduling Scheduling groups of jobs The job shop problem Simulation models for the dynamic job shop Network methods for project scheduling Resource-constrained project scheduling Stochastic and safe scheduling Extensive end-of-chapter exercises are provided, some of which are spreadsheet-oriented, and link scheduling theory to the most popular analytic platform among today's students and practitioners—the Microsoft Office Excel® spreadsheet. Extensive references direct readers to additional literature, and the book's related Web site houses material that reinforces the book's concepts, including research notes, data sets, and examples from the text. Principles of Sequencing and Scheduling is an excellent book for courses on sequencing and scheduling at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of statistics, computer science, operations research, and engineering.
