En France, le nombre de personnes de plus de 80 ans augmente et devrait croître de 88 % d’ici 2050. La longévité est une bonne nouvelle mais, avec elle, la question de la dépendance et de la perte d’autonomie prend une importance capitale. La Direction de la recherche, des études, de l'évaluation et des statistiques (DREES) estimait que 2,5 millions de personnes étaient en perte d’autonomie en 2015 et que ce chiffre devrait dépasser la barre des 3 millions en 2030. Même si plusieurs types de solutions existent pour la prise en charge de la dépendance chez les personnes âgées, les besoins sont très importants et les places comme les aides formelles ou informelles ne sont pas suffisantes. La France compte aujourd’hui près de 11 millions d’aidants familiaux qui assistent une personne de leur entourage proche par une aide matérielle et/ou financière. Cette aide, formelle ou informelle, est majoritairement fournie par les femmes. Aux grands âges, les femmes sont également plus touchées par des situations de dépendance, elles sont également plus nombreuses en maison de retraite. Sous le co-pilotage de Jean-Hervé Lorenzi et de Pierre Pestieau, le numéro 152 de la Revue d’économie financière est consacré à la dépendance liée à l’âge. Il rappelle la définition de la dépendance et celle de la perte d’autonomie, s’interroge sur la façon de mesurer le degré de dépendance en se fondant sur les activités de la vie quotidienne que les personnes peuvent ou non effectuer seules. Quelles solutions innovantes pour prévenir la dépendance ? Comment financer sa prise en charge ? Existe-t-il de nouvelles perspectives de financement à mettre en œuvre ?
