Honorés dans l’Antiquité, les devins furent soupçonnés de paganisme et de sorcellerie, dans les sociétés chrétiennes, et, mis hors la loi, furent condamnés au bûcher. Cependant, des voyants et des astrologues, souvent savants et habiles, furent employés par les rois et les reines qui souhaitaient que leur fussent prédites longévité et prospérité. Ou par des chefs d’État s’efforçant d’établir leur stratégie et de conduire leur action dans le sens le plus favorable. Ou encore par la police à la recherche de criminels et de personnes disparues, par des malades en quête d’un diagnostic, etc. Il existe de nombreuses “techniques” de voyance, utilisant des “supports” très variés : cartes, boules de cristal, pendules, marc de café, feuilles de thé, osselets, épingles, taches d’encre, lignes de la main, rêves et d’autres plus insolites encore. Quant aux astrologues, bien sûr ils tirent leurs horoscopes de l’aspect des corps célestes. Aujourd’hui, l’astrologie dite “scientifique” va jusqu’à employer l’ordinateur pour ses prédictions... On trouvera dans ce dossier une très riche étude des diverses sciences occultes liées à la prédiction, ainsi qu’une rétrospective des prophéties célèbres exprimées au cours des âges, depuis le troublant et peut-être génial Nostradamus. Certains prophètes, notamment, ont annoncé le réveil actuel de l’islam, son alliance avec le communisme russe, l’éventualité d’une nouvelle invasion asiatique de l’Europe. Et leur vision des années 2000 est en complet désaccord avec celle de nos futurologues.
