Book Synopsis Women’s Studies of the Christian and Islamic Traditions by : Kari Elisabeth Børresen
Download or read book Women’s Studies of the Christian and Islamic Traditions written by Kari Elisabeth Børresen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of articles, Kari Elisabeth Børresen and Kari Vogt point out the convergence of androcentric gender models in the Christian and Islamic traditions. They provide extensive surveys of recent research in women's studies, with bio-socio-cultural genderedness as their main analytical category. Matristic writers from late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are analysed in terms of a female God language, reshaping traditional theology. The persisting androcentrism of 20th-century Christianity and Islam, as displayed in institutional documents promoting women's specific functions, is critically exposed. This volume presents a pioneering investigation of correlated Christian and Islamic gender models which has hitherto remained uncompared by women's studies in religion. This work will serve scholars and students in the humanistic disciplines of theology, religious studies, Islamic studies, history of ideas, Medieval philosophy and women's history.

Book excerpt: This is a historical excursus that describes female ministries in the early Church. It analyzes the disputed traces of women in the presbyteral ministry, diaconal ministry, and the differences in ordination rite and functions for deaconesses and deacons of the Byzantine Church. Information is included on the gender balance of today's identical ordination rite and functions of deaconesses and deacons. The study also examines: the hypothetical possibility of female presbyteral ordination; belief in female subordination; the spousal symbol; Mary; woman and person; reciprocity; the incarnation of the Word; the impossibility of female presbyteral vocation; the value of doctrines; and the sacramental sign and substance of a sacrament. In conclusion, a prayer for female presbyteral ordination is proposed. Book Synopsis Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla by : Ailbe M. O'Reilly
Download or read book Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla written by Ailbe M. O'Reilly and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla explains how Karol Wojtyla, philosopher, theologian, and Pope, tried to show how the sexual act, within the context of marriage, is an expression of love. After explaining how love as goodwill is the foundation of conjugal love, the correct relationship between love and justice is clarified. The negative dimension of the personalistic norm of Wojtyla is then critically examined. Conjugal love is explained in terms of conjugal beneficience based on conjugal benevolence. This love leads to total self-giving in each conjugal act. The procreative meaning of the conjugal act seems to be its most formal element (the soul of the act, so to speak); the unitive element is described as an essential property of this act, something which necessarily flows from the conjugal act which is open to life. Chastity is the virtue that allows sexuality to be integrated into a love which is truly personal and reflects Trinitarian Love.

Book Synopsis The Nuptial Mystery by : Angelo Scola
Download or read book The Nuptial Mystery written by Angelo Scola and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Michelle K. Borras The idea of love pervades our society, yet it is nearly impossible to answer the question What is love? especially as we witness the divorce of love from sexuality and of sexuality from procreation. Aware that many people today are skeptical about marriage, Angelo Cardinal Scola nevertheless suggests that only in the category of nuptial mystery do we find a way to adequately describe the phenomenon of love. A bright new leader in the Catholic Church, Cardinal Scola argues that the male-female relationship lies near the heart of what it means to bear the image of God. Scola's book explores the essential sexual differences that both separate and unite men and women, and it shows how men and women can realize their purpose in marriage or celibacy. Conversant with papal teaching and Catholic writers from Aquinas to von Balthasar, Cardinal Scola writes with a deep regard for marriage and the family. His Nuptial Mystery will leave readers with a thoroughly Christian appreciation for incarnate love.
