Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The logistician plays a critical role in the growth of his or her company – in this third edition of Essentials of Logistics, the conceptual framework in which all the stakes and themes of logistics is systematically analyzed, with a strong focus on the role of the supply chain. Indeed, many elements are critical to the successful logistical strategy: customer relation management, interactive information support, production optimization and process development, vision, strategy and operations management, and human resources and resource allocation. Growing out of a successful course given by the International Institute for the Management of Logistics (IML) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), in Lausanne, and by the Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech (ENPC), the purpose of this book is to present a methodology allowing the reader to understand and act based on the critical factors embedded in the design of strategy. Concepts are thus combined with practical examples. Transversal vision and detailed case studies highlight the main themes of modern logistics and daily preoccupations of logisticians. The book is addressed to all professionals of logistics: managers, planners and engineers; as well as to graduate students specializing in the field.

Book excerpt: Evaluating Transnational Programs in Government and Business is a collection of papers presented at a symposium entitled ""Evaluating Transnational Programs,"" conducted at Case Western Reserve University during the 1977-1978 academic year. The symposium was organized to address the various issues and controversies surrounding adequate methods for effective policy evaluation and assessment at the transnational level. The book explores the conceptual, methodological, bureaucratic, political, and organizational factors that hinder sound evaluation of government and private programs with transnational implications. This monograph consists of 11 chapters and opens with an introduction to methodological issues in the transnational field. It then reviews the development of various world modeling activities and compares them from the standpoints of characteristics, structure, methodological underpinnings, applications, and criticisms. The World Integrated Model is used to assess United States policy options regarding agricultural exports and oil imports by placing them in a broader transnational context. The following chapters focus on various problems in the evaluation of U.S. foreign economic policies, including foreign trade and investment policies. The criteria used by development banks in the processing of loan requests are also considered, along with non-economic objectives in economic development assistance programs; the role of multinational corporations as agents of technology transfer and their effects on changing U.S. policies regarding foreign investment. The final chapter deals with the growing need for transnational appraisal of the impacts of institutions on basic human values. This book will be of interest to business and government officials as well as social and political scientists.

Book excerpt: Fifty years after the conclusion of the Treaties of Rome (25 March 1957) and the foundation of the European Economic Community, Brussels has become a political world city and international capital with global influence. The acta of the interuniversity and international colloquium, held in Brussels on 18 and 19 December 2006, present a general outline of the research results and 26 contributions, based on original research and divided into three parts. The first part focuses on Brussels' position in the 'world city network'. How has Brussels grown into the European and international 'capital' we know today? What exactly is its legal status as the European 'Capital'? Of course, other aspects such as the relationship between the Brussels-Capital Region and the Europe of Regions and the role of Brussels as the place for lobbying the European Union are also examined. The second part focuses on the interaction between the European institutions and Brussels. What are the socioeconomic, demographic, political and linguistic effects of their presence? Finally, a number of pressure points and areas of tension are analysed. How is Brussels 'imagined' or represented as the capital of Europe? And what is the impact of the European presence on urban planning and security policy? -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm of mass production has given way to radically new forms of organizing industrial production based primarily on the need to foster continuous redesign of products and processes in the face of intensified competition. This change, which is designed to engender continuous adaptive learning in production systems, requires considerable organizational flexibility. The mass production systems constructed in the early post-war period foundered in the face of new forms of competition which put a premium on learning and flexibility.

Book excerpt: Modern France is an up-to-date and accessible introduction to the nature of French society at the end of the twentieth century. The book examines the transition of France and French life as the nation moves from an industrial to a post-industrial economy, and the cultural and social dislocations that such an evoltuion implies. Sociological concepts and categories of class, race, gender, age and region are discussed as well as how they combine together to produce inequalities and identities. These concepts are then applied to a range of issues such as work, politics, education, health, religion and leisure. Modern France reveals the nature of French society at a critical moment in her evolution and how a member of the European Union reflects distinctiveness and commonality in the development of Europe as a whole.
