Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represent a high point in the intersection between design and workmanship. Skilled artisans, creative and technically competent agents within their own field, worked across a wide spectrum of practice that encompassed design, supervision and execution, and architects relied heavily on the experience they brought to the building site. Despite this, the bridge between design and tacit artisanal knowledge has been an underarticulated factor in the architectural achievement of the early modern era. Building on the shift towards a collaborative and qualitative analysis of architectural production, Between Design and Making re-evaluates the social and professional fabric that binds design to making, and reflects on the asymmetry that has emerged between architecture and craft. Combining analysis of buildings, archival material and eighteenth-century writings, the authors draw out the professional, pedagogical and social links between architectural practice and workmanship. They argue for a process-oriented understanding of architectural production, exploring the obscure centre ground of the creative process: the scribbled, sketched, hatched and annotated beginnings of design on the page; the discussions, arguments and revisions in the forging of details; and the grappling with stone, wood and plaster on the building site that pushed projects from conception to completion.

Book excerpt: This study adds another insight into the period of Louis XIV - that the confluence of the theatrical arts from older traditions developed to shape a distinctly French style which all pertained to the glorification of the Sun King. While previous studies have stressed the literary and musical side of the performances of the period, this study examines the settings and scene designs which completed the picture of the royal mythologies. Besides giving an account of the festivities of Versailles and other venues, and setting them in their social environment, this work relates the spectacles to the political and social milieu, incorporating both contemporary literary theory and cultural history.

Book excerpt: "This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of Louis XIV's magnificent final chapel at Versailles, completed in 1710 near the end of his long reign (1643-1715). Construction, begun in 1699 on foundations of 1689, spanned the offices of two premiers architects du roi, Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte. Eight painters and over 100 sculptors participated in the monumental undertaking, which remains almost unchanged today. An unusually large number of archival documents, drawings, and early texts about the chapel allow a detailed reconstruction of its history and meaning. Given Louis XIV's renown as one of the great kings and art patrons of all history and the universal definitions of his power in terms of divine kingship, the story of his palace chapel interests all historians of the ancien regime."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in France were an epoch of spectacular artistic activity, exemplified by the chateaux of the Loire valley, the palace of Versailles, the paintings of Poussin and Claude, and the sculpture of Coysevox, which echo the political and cultural importance of France and the "Sun King." Anthony Blunt presents major artists and their principal works chronologically, provides an overview of the main projects of the period and of the artistic personalities behind them, and clearly sets the historical context. This new edition, of one of the classics of the Pelican History of Art series, has been revised and updated with color illustrations and a new bibliography.

These exquisite examples of the art of tapestry weaving include medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque works manufactured at many of the foremost workshops in the major centers of production. Among the pieces discussed are The Annunciation, a Renaissance masterpiece designed by an artist in the circle of Andrea Mantegna; The Story of Caesar and Cleopatra, a magnificent series of fourteen tapestries now attributed with certainty to Justus van Egmont, who worked in Rubens's studio; Autumn and Winter, based on designs by Charles Le Bron; and The Elephant, woven after a design by Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. An international team of scholars explains the history of this previously unpublished collection and offers new designer and workshop attributions, design and source identifications, and provenance information." --Book Jacket.
