Book excerpt: At the opening of the twentieth century, Britain's influence in Argentina was at its peak and resembled, in certain ways, its position in countries such as Australia and Canada. Yet, in the following generation, British preeminence was persistently threatened, and Argentina's prospects plunged into a seemingly irreversible decline. Why did the Anglo-Argentine connection, which appeared so mutually beneficial in 1900, become strained to the breaking point by 1939? This book shows that Britain's efforts in Argentina were usually more pathetic than imperialistic, but that in periods of difficulty (1914 to 1918, and in the 1930s), British pressure unwittingly helped into power a political party that brought destruction, not merely to British interests, but also to the Argentine Republic's future promise.

Download or read book Sovereign Debt written by Mauro Megliani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough legal analysis of sovereign indebtedness, examining four typologies of sovereign debt – bilateral debt, multilateral debt, syndicated debt and bonded debt – in relation to three crucial contexts: genesis, restructuring and litigation. Its treatise-style approach makes it possible to capture in a systematic manner a phenomenon characterized by high complexity and unclear boundaries. Though the analysis is mainly conducted on the basis of international law, the breadth of this topical subject has made it necessary to include other sources, such as private international law, domestic law and financial practice; moreover, references are made to international financial relations and international financial history so as to provide a more complete understanding. Although it follows the structure of a continental tractatus, the work strikes a balance between consideration of doctrinal and jurisprudential sources, making it a valuable reference work for scholars and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: This report examines the difficult economic situation facing Argentine policymakers at the end of 1983 as a new government assumed power. The country's experience with stabilization and economic liberalization is reviewed, distinguishing between the 1976-78 period-when rapid devaluations, a reduction of the fiscal deficit and the easing of price and financial controls helped stimulate exports and growth-and the period after October 1978 when inconsistencies between exchange rate, import liberalization, wage, and fiscal policies produced a deep recession, high levels of inflation, and a serious balance of payments and external debt crisis. Despite present difficulties, the report concludes that the Argentine economy possesses important elements of long-term strength, which, with sustained economic recovery and sound domestic policies, should permit a resumption of growth, at the same time that the burden of external debt is gradually reduced. The report recommends a number of medium-term measures to improve fiscal management, including better tax administration, providing adequate export incentive to both agriculture and industry, and raising the efficiency of the financial system in mobilizing and allocating domestic savings.
Book Synopsis Continuity Despite Change by : Matthew E. Carnes
Download or read book Continuity Despite Change written by Matthew E. Carnes and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the dust settles on nearly three decades of economic reform in Latin America, one of the most fundamental economic policy areas has changed far less than expected: labor regulation. To date, Latin America's labor laws remain both rigidly protective and remarkably diverse. Continuity Despite Change develops a new theoretical framework for understanding labor laws and their change through time, beginning by conceptualizing labor laws as comprehensive systems or "regimes." In this context, Matthew Carnes demonstrates that the reform measures introduced in the 1980s and 1990s have only marginally modified the labor laws from decades earlier. To explain this continuity, he argues that labor law development is constrained by long-term economic conditions and labor market institutions. He points specifically to two key factors—the distribution of worker skill levels and the organizational capacity of workers. Carnes presents cross-national statistical evidence from the eighteen major Latin American economies to show that the theory holds for the decades from the 1980s to the 2000s, a period in which many countries grappled with proposed changes to their labor laws. He then offers theoretically grounded narratives to explain the different labor law configurations and reform paths of Chile, Peru, and Argentina. His findings push for a rethinking of the impact of globalization on labor regulation, as economic and political institutions governing labor have proven to be more resilient than earlier studies have suggested.
