Book excerpt: This monograph studies the professionalization of History of religions as an academic discipline in late 19th and early 20th century France and Europe. Its common thread is the work of the French Modernist priest and later Professor of History of religions at the Collège de France, Alfred Loisy (1857-1940), who participated in many of the most topical debates among French and international historians of religions. Unlike his well-studied Modernist theology, Loisy’s writings on comparative religion, and his rich interactions with famous scholars like F. Cumont, M. Mauss, or J.G. Frazer, remain largely unknown. This monograph is the first to paint a comprehensive picture of his career as a historian of religions before and after his excommunication in 1908. Through a contextual analysis of publications by Loisy and contemporaries, and a large corpus of private correspondence, it illuminates the scientification of the discipline between 1890-1920, and its deep entanglement with religion, politics, and society. Particular attention is also given to the role of national and transnational scholarly networks, and the way they controlled the theoretical and institutional frameworks for studying the history of religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, Conflicts in French Society is a detailed study of the social history of anticlericalism. Its four chapters, based on original research, reinterpret the causes and extent of some traditional conflicts in modern French society. In ‘The Conflict of Moralities,’ Theodore Zeldin investigates the confession to discover what sins and pleasures of daily life were revealed and repressed by it. This provides rare insight into sexual behaviour in nineteenth-century France. In ‘The Conflict in Education,’ Robert Anderson shows us how different the pupils of church and state schools really were and challenges the view that the two systems divided France into hostile camps. In ‘The Conflict in Politics,’ Austin Gough describes the way the church organized a political following, and how the Bonapartists fought back. In ‘The Conflict in Village Life,’ Roger Magraw studies popular anticlericalism at the local level and shows how ideology was far from being the major cause of it. In doing so, he provides an intimate picture of village life. This book will be of interest to sociologists of religion and educationists as well as to those wishing to understand the politics and morals of France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Torah Praxis after 70 CE, Oliver challenges conventional views of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke as well as the Acts of the Apostles. He reads the works not only against their Jewish “background” but also as early Jewish literature. In doing so, he questions the traditional classification of Luke-Acts as a “Greek” or Gentile-Christian text. To support his assertions, Dr. Oliver’s literary-historical investigation explores the question of Torah praxis in each book, citing evidence that suggests several ritual Jewish practices remained fixtures in the Jesus movement and that Jewish followers of Jesus played key roles in forming the ekklesia well into the first century CE.

Book excerpt: A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated by contemporary research on Qumran, but also its international character. Since the study of texts remains the first task of the Qumran scholar many of the collection's papers belong to its first section — Texts and Text Studies. The other six sections are: The History of the Qumran Community, Halakha at Qumran, Qumran and the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and the New Testament and The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
