En s'intéressant à l'écologie, l'Eglise catholique n'a pas cédé à une mode mais a fait de la sauvegarde de la nature l'un de ses thèmes de réflexion importants. C'est avec le pape Jean-Paul II que Rome a commencé à montrer un intérêt majeur pour la protection de l'environnement, une préoccupation qui s'est poursuivie sous le pontificat de Benoît XVI. En 2000 l'épiscopat français a publié un ouvrage intitulé, Le respect de la création. Ce colloque organisé par la Faculté de théologie d'Angers, qui a souhaité rassembler des spécialistes de diverses disciplines (théologie, sciences du vivant, histoire, philosophie, sociologie, arts) a cherché à montrer l'attrait du christianisme pour les problèmes écologiques, ses prises de position à ce sujet et les solutions qu'il entendait y apporter. La particularité du christianisme est d'avoir toujours pensé l'environnement en rapport étroit avec les conditions de vie de l'être humain. Il ne s'agit donc pas donc pas de " sacraliser la nature mais de la penser en liaison intime avec le devenir de l'humanité. Au sein des confessions chrétiennes, la nature a souvent été perçue comme un chemin pouvant mener à Dieu. Tout le courant franciscain l'a bien mis en évidence et ce n'est pas un hasard si nombre d'artistes chrétiens, en musique ou en peinture, y ont puisé pour associer dans un même élan la contemplation de la nature et l'impérative nécessité de la préserver.

Après avoir montré que déjà au XIXe siècle plusieurs scientifiques catholiques essayaient de concilier leur foi et leurs connaissances environnementales, nous verrons que c’est surtout à partir du sud du monde avec notamment la théologie de la libération et par l’engagement de la Compagnie de Jésus que cette prise de conscience a pu avoir lieu, tardivement, dans le catholicisme. Mais là encore, sans réel impact en ce qui concerne l’engagement local des paroisses en Europe. Si les discours théologiques des Églises intègrent de plus en plus la dimension environnementale, le temps des paroisses prophétiques ou exemplaires dans ce domaine en Europe semble encore bien loin
