Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There could hardly be a more topical book than this for the committed Christian. War and the Gospel does not pose a new problem. The problem is as old as the Christian faith, but it has assumed a greater urgency in our own time. Can a Christian conscientiously take part in modern war, a war that would undoubtedly result in the annihilation of tens of thousands of innocent persons? There have been numerous books and propaganda pamphlets issued on this subject, most of them utopian or idealistic rather than Biblical in viewpoint. It is the Biblical realism of this book that makes it such a deep and prophetic contribution to the subject. "Christian theology should start from the Scriptures, not from preconceived ideas", writes the author, and he adheres firmly to that standpoint throughout. The clarity of the author's exposition, the pertinence of his analysis, the vigour of his convictions and the firmness of his testimony make War and the Gospel a very important contribution to the most urgent question of our time.

Ces sermons prêchés alors qu'il était octogénaire, n'ont par conséquent rien de théorique ou d'artificiel ; mais ils sont le fruit de la foi en Christ, qui permet de traverser victorieusement les deuils de notre vie terrestre.

Book excerpt: Philosophy of religion is a highly diversified field. An apt description of it is “zoo.” It conjures imagery of a species-wide cacophony of sights and sounds. While some bemoan what this description implies, Contributors to this volume appreciate it. There is no reason why a zoo should intimate a den of confusion rather than an important condition of emergence and novelty. “Polyphonic” is the catchall term to capture this sentiment. It signals a way of thinking that resists the desire to siphon insight into manageable packets of information in the Name of historicality and finitude. A polyphonic, then, is a variegated and discontinuous study that breaks with a tradition that desires continuity and unification, without being erratic. This volume is an exercise in polyphonic thinking. Each contributing scholar develops ideas in connection with his or her research interests. Despite the fluctuation of themes, symmetry exists as each piece sounds off a core melody of religion and the divine. The book contributes to the advancement of current research in contemporary Continental philosophy of religion. By juxtaposing articles by cultural theorists and philosophers of religion, religionists and theologians, the book emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary and polyphonic conversation to the development of matters of topical interest and issues related to method and ethics in religious studies, and theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Taizé, there was Grandchamp. The lesser-known Protestant women’s community, initiated in 1936, grew out of generations of women’s groups in French-speaking Switzerland. It was heavily influenced by Wilfred Monod, the Student Christian Movement, Swiss Reformed efforts at liturgical renewal, and Bonhoeffer’s Life Together. It was so deeply affected by the angst generated by World War II and the search by European Christians for new ways to be Christian. The Fruits of Grace, authored by the third prioress of the Community of Grandchamp in Switzerland, reflects on the origins of the community, the sources and development of its spirituality, and on its ministries. Foci include the involvement of the community in the ecumenical movement and in mission around the world. There is also important new information about its interaction with Taizé, Roman Catholic religious communities, and the women themselves, as individuals and as a community. Sister Minke de Vries provides an intimate view into the inner workings of a women’s community and the structures of the spiritual practices of the Community of Grandchamp. It is a powerful analysis of a European Protestant women’s monastic community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one become a "Righteous among the Nations"? In the case of Henri Nick (1868-1954) and Andre Trocme (1901-1971), two French Protestant pastors on whom that title was conferred by Yad Vashem (Jerusalem) for their acts of solidarity toward persecuted Jews, the answer seems to be: by being immersed, from an early age, in the discourses and practices of social Christianity. By focusing on the lives of two significant figures of twentieth-century Christianity, this study, the first in English on the Social Gospel in French Protestantism, presents a genealogy of that movement, from its emergence in the last decades of the nineteenth century to its high point, during World War II, in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, where Trocme and many people of that area of southern France rescued hundreds of Jewish refugees. As social Christians who prayed and worked for the coming of God's kingdom on earth in the midst of a world torn by two world wars, Henri Nick and Andre Trocme combined a deep revivalist faith with a concern for the concrete conditions in which people live. They wished to "save" others, and indeed they realized that intent in ways they did not foresee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Knight-Monks of Vichy France John Hellman describes the founding, operation, transformation, and demise of the school, details the institution's ideological and political struggles with other segments of French society, and deals with the remarkable rise of Uriage ideas and alumni in postwar France. By focusing on the social, philosophical, and psychological concepts propounded by the staff of the school, Hellman has produced the first study that shows the École Nationale des Cadres d'Uriage to have been an original educational and group experience which inspired French youth from very different backgrounds to abandon the liberal democratic tradition for a new political and social vision. Drawing on a variety of sources, including interviews, newly available archival material, Vichy publications, correspondence, and diary entries, Hellman contributes to the current, lively debate concerning the phenomenon of collaboration and the response of the French population to fascism and to the occupation during the Second World War. This book will be of particular interest to readers concerned with the intellectual and political life of modern France, modern religious thought and experience, fascism and the Vichy regime, changes in France in the prewar and postwar periods, and the "third way" political option in contemporary Europe.
