Book excerpt: Presenting a rare glimpse into the dining rooms of Belgian nobility from the Middle Ages to modern times, specialists in the field discuss gastronomy and festive culture in a historical and sociological context. This stunning work provides insights into both the culinary proclivities and table manors of these epic gourmands, answering such questions as What was the daily menu of the dukes of Burgundy? What was behind the sudden enthusiasm for saltwater fish in the 17th century? and Why were exotic desserts so popular in the 19th century? A valuable addition to the historical study of Belgian Noblemen and the ruling elite, this bilingual collection--presented in both English and French--creates a wonderfully rich portrait of the past, from the dukes of Burgundy to Belgian royalty.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume of essays in his honour gives a good overview of the fields in which Prof. Van Doorselaer has been active throughout his academic career. This book is especially an Album Amicorum, filled with reminiscences and intentions to continue the work. The voluminous size of this book may be considered as an adequate measure of the overall sympathy for Prof. Van Doorselaer. We hope that this publication may encourage him to remain active in the field of archaeology, and that the co-operation among colleagues, stimulated by this project, may be continued in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002 the 21st Colloque of Ch'teau Gaillard was held in Maynooth in Ireland. This well-presented and richly illustrated volume presents the proceedings. Thirty-one papers present recent archaeological discoveries or research developments at castles and their environs across Europe. Specific case studies are accompanied by more general syntheses of castles and castle-building across broad geographical regions, including Germany, Switzerland, Norman England, the Netherlands, Finland, Bohemia, Andalusia, the Rhineland, and Ireland. Case studies include the castle of Coudenburg in Brussels, the castle of Rosstal, Hen Domen in Wales, Schlossberg at Graz, Newark in Nottinghamshire and the Viking Grevlunda Motte in Scania, and others. Papers also examine economic activity surrounding castles and typical religious structures. Two tributes to Arnold Taylor begins the volume. Papers in French, English, or German; all have abstracts in these three languages.

Book excerpt: This book investigates Jan Van Eyck's patronage by the Crown of Portugal and his role as diplomat-painter for the Duchy of Burgundy following his first voyage to Lisbon in 1428-1429, when he painted two portraits of Infanta Isabella, who became the third wife of Philip the Good in 1430. New portrait identifications are provided for the Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and its iconographical prototype, the lost Fountain of Life. These altarpieces are analysed with regard to King Joao I's conquest of Ceuta, achieved by his sons, who were hailed as an "illustrious generation." Strong family ties between the dynastic houses of Avis and Lancaster explain Lusitania's sustained fascination with Arthurian lore and the Grail quest. Several chapters of this book are overlaid with a chivalric veneer. A second "secret mission" to Portugal in 1437 by Jan van Eyck is postulated and this diplomatic visit is related to Prince Henry the Navigator's expedition to Tangier and King Duarte's attempts to forge an alliance with Alfonso V of Aragon. Late Eyckian commissions are reviewed in the light of this ill-fated crusade and additional new portraits are identified. The most significant artist of Renaissance Flanders appears to have been patronized as much by the House of Avis as by the Duchy of Burgundy. Barbara von Barghahn is Professor of Art History at George Washington University and a specialist in the art history of Portugal, Spain, and their colonial dominions, as well as Flanders. In 1993, she was conferred O Grao Comendador in the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry the Navigator. She has spent nearly a decade completing research about Jan van Eyck's diplomatic visits to the Iberian Peninsula.

Book excerpt: The articles here concern the period from the end of the Roman Empire up to the 10th-11th centuries and the lands between the Loire and the Rhine, most particularly the Low Countries. Rural history forms the subject of the first studies, which focus on the large ’classical’ estates of the Carolingian period. Adriaan Verhulst has argued convincingly that these were medieval creations, not any inheritance from Late Antiquity, and emphasizes their regional differences. The following section, on urban history, consists of three studies on the origins and early development of the key Flemish cities of Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp (this last now in English), and three broader-ranging essays which seriously challenge Pirenne’s long accepted views of town origins. In these the author makes full use of contemporary archaeological research to supplement the scanty written sources and to examine the possibilities of (dis)continuity from Roman times through the early Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: New studies on manorial domestic buildings in England and northern France has led to a reappraisal of the essential elements of the seigneurial residence: the ground-floor hall, the chamber-block and the first-floor hall. The eight essays in this volume highlight the similarities and differences between the regions, and include contributions by: J Blair (English domestic planning, 1000-1250); P Dixon (The manor-houses of the Anglo-Scottish border); J Munby (Manorial building in timber in central and southern England, 1200-1550); J Decaens (De la motte au chateau de pierre dans le nord et l'est de l'Ile-de-France du XIIe au XVe siecle); E Gautier-Desvaux (Les manoirs du Perche); G Meirion-Jones, M Jones and J R Pilcher (The seigneurial domestic buildings of Brittany, 1000-1700).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (1174-85) has traditionally been seen as a period of decline when, because of the king's illness, power came to be held by unsuitable men who made the wrong policy decisions. Notably, they ignored the advice of Raymond of Tripoli and attacked Saladin, who was prepared to keep peace with the Franks while uniting the Islamic near east under his rule. This book challenges that view, arguing that peace with Saladin was not a viable option for the Franks; that the young king, despite suffering from lepromatous leprosy (the most deadly form of the disease) was an excellent battle leader who strove with some success to frustrate Saladin's imperial ambitions; that Baldwin had to remain king in order to hold factions in check; but that the society over which he presided was, contrary to what is often said, vigorous and self-confident.
