Book Synopsis How To Do Politics With Art by : Violaine Roussel
Download or read book How To Do Politics With Art written by Violaine Roussel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major issue in the relation of art to the rest of society is the question of how art penetrates politics. From the perspective of most art scholars, this is a question of aesthetics—whether politics necessarily pollutes and debases the quality of the arts. From the perspective of social science, it has been primarily a question of meaning—how political messages are conveyed through artistic media. Recent work has begun to broaden the study of the arts and politics beyond semiosis and content focus. Several strands of scholarship are converging around the general issue of the social relationships within which art takes political form, that is, how art and artists do politics. This perspective of "doing" moves analysis beyond addressing the meaning of culture, to focus on the ways that art is embedded in—and intervenes in—social relationships, activities, and institutions. This volume brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars from France and the United States to investigate these directions and themes by exploring the question of "how to do politics with art" from a comparative standpoint, putting sociological approaches in conversation with other disciplinary prisms. It will be of interest to scholars of social movements and politicization, the sociology of art, art history, and aesthetics.

Download or read book Carnaval et comédie written by Malika Bastin-Hammou and published by Presses Universitaires de Franche-Comté. This book was released on 2015 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Discourse of Kingship in Classical Greece by : Carol Atack
Download or read book The Discourse of Kingship in Classical Greece written by Carol Atack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how ancient authors explored ideas of kingship as a political role fundamental to the construction of civic unity, the use of kingship stories to explain the past and present unity of the polis and the distinctive function or status attributed to kings in such accounts. It explores the notion of kingship offered by historians such as Herodotus, as well as dramatists writing for the Athenian stage, paying particular attention to dramatic depictions of the unique capabilities of Theseus in uniting the city in the figure of the ‘democratic king’. It also discusses kingship in Greek philosophy: the Socratics’ identification of an ‘art of kingship’, and Xenophon and Isocrates’ model of ‘virtue monarchy’. In turn, these allow a rereading of explorations of kingship and excellence in Plato’s later political thought, seen as a critique of these models, and also in Aristotle’s account of total kingship or pambasileia, treated here as a counterfactual device developed to explore the epistemic benefits of democracy. This book offers a fascinating insight into the institution of monarchy in classical Greek thought and society, both for those working on Greek philosophy and politics, and also for students of the history of political thought.
Book Synopsis Contextualizing Classics by : John Peradotto
Download or read book Contextualizing Classics written by John Peradotto and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays examines innovations in both the theory and practice of classical philology. The chapters address interdisciplinary methods in a variety of ways. Some apply theoretical insights derived from other disciplines, such as folklore studies, performance theory, feminist criticism, and the like, to classical texts. Others examine the relationships between classics and cultural studies, popular literature, film, art history, and other related disciplines. Others, again, look to the evolution of theoretical methods within the discipline of classics. Taken together, the essays offer a spectrum of new approaches in the classics and their place within the profession.
