Book excerpt: POUR EVALUER LES APTITUDES DU BETON DE FIBRES METALLIQUES AMORPHES COMME MATERIAU DE REPARATION, NOUS AVONS ETUDIE L'INFLUENCE DE 0,3% EN VOLUME DE FIBRES, D'UNE PART SUR LA DURABILITE DU BETON VIS-A-VIS DE LA PENETRATION DES AGENTS AGRESSIFS, D'AUTRE PART SUR LES VARIATIONS DIMENSIONNELLES DU BETON ET, LORSQU'IL EST UTILISE EN REPARATION, SUR SA CAPACITE A REDUIRE LES EFFETS NEFASTES DES VARIATIONS DIMENSIONNELLES DIFFERENTIELLES ENTRE LA COUCHE DE REPARATION ET LE SUPPORT D'ANCIEN BETON. DES ESSAIS D'ABSORPTION ET DE CARBONATATION SUR PLUSIEURS BETONS AVEC ET SANS FIBRES MONTRENT QUE LES FIBRES MODIFIENT LA REPARTITION POROMETRIQUE DU BETON EN LOCALISANT BEAUCOUP DE GROS CAPILLAIRES DANS L'AUREOLE DE TRANSITION DES FIBRES. CES MODIFICATIONS MICROSTRUCTURALES VONT ACCELERER LA PENETRATION DES AGENTS AGRESSIFS LORSQUE CELLE-CI SE FAIT PAR ABSORPTION DE SOLUTION ET LA RALENTIR LORSQU'ELLE S'EFFECTUE PAR DIFFUSION, CECI TANT QUE LES AUREOLES DES FIBRES RESTENT DISJOINTES. - NOS RESULTATS MONTRENT QUE L'INTRODUCTION DE 0,3% EN VOLUME DE FIBRE DE FONTE REDUIT DE 10% LES VARIATIONS DIMENSIONNELLES DE RETRAIT ET LIMITE CELLES DE GONFLEMENT INTERVENANT EN PARTICULIER DURANT LES PREMIERES 24 HEURES. NOUS AVONS ENSUITE CONSIDERE L'ASSOCIATION ANCIEN-NOUVEAU BETON. L'ETUDE A MIS EN EVIDENCE L'EXISTENCE D'UNE ZONE FORTEMENT DEFORMEE (ZONE DE CONTACT) AU VOISINAGE DE L'INTERFACE ANCIEN-NOUVEAU BETON. PAR FLUAGE ET RELAXATION ELLE PERMET AU DESACCORD DIMENSIONNEL QUI S'ETABLIT ENTRE LES DEUX BETONS DE SE DEVELOPPER SANS CONTRAINTES SIGNIFICATIVES. CETTE CAPACITE A CEPENDANT UNE LIMITE QUI DEPEND, NOTAMMENT, DE L'AGE DU BETON LORSQUE LE DESACCORD S'INSTALLE. - DANS LES CONDITIONS DE NOS ESSAIS, L'AJOUT DE FIBRES AUGMENTE DE 15% LES POSSIBILITES D'ADAPTATION DE LA ZONE DE CONTACT. PAR AILLEURS, DES VARIATIONS DIMENSIONNELLES PLUS RAPIDES QUE CELLES DE RETRAIT PEUVENT ENGENDRER UNE MICROFISSURATION DU CONTACT EFFICACEMENT LIMITEE PAR LES FIBRES

This book was released on 1986 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book excerpt: Among different approaches that can be considered for concrete rehabilitation, bonded overlays are often the most economical alternative. The primary purpose of overlays is to extend the life of the candidate structures, either by restoring the quality and integrity of the surface and/or the re-establishing or improving the load-carrying capacity. Nevertheless, the durability of bonded overlay systems still draws concerns in the technical community because of bond sustainability problems encountered in a number of cases. At this time, there is still no accepted design approach or methodology that can warrant the practitioner a successful outcome of the repair. This State-of-Art report summarizes the findings with respect to all aspects involved in the overlaying process.

Book excerpt: Soils are affected by human activities, such as industrial, municipal and agriculture, that often result in soil degradation and loss. In order to prevent soil degradation and to rehabilitate the potentials of degraded soils, reliable soil data are the most important prerequisites for the design of appropriate land-use systems and soil management practices as well as for a better understanding of the environment. The availability of reliable information on soil morphology and other characteristics obtained through examination and description of the soil in the field is essential, and the use of a common language is of prime importance. These guidelines, based on the latest internationally accepted systems and classifications, provide a complete procedure for soil description and for collecting field data. To help beginners, some explanatory notes are included as well as keys based on simple test and observations.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, silicon carbide fibres and whiskers, and carbon nanotubes, including single-walled and multiwalled types. None of these agents had been assessed previously by the IARC Monographs Working Group. The Working Group relied mainly on epidemiological studies to evaluate the carcinogenic hazard to humans exposed to fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole, an environmental contaminant that was reported to cause mesothelioma in the regional population of Biancavilla, Sicily, Italy. Silicon carbide fibres are by-products of the manufacture of silicon carbide particles by the Acheson process; silicon carbide whiskers are produced by other processes. The evaluations of the fibres and of the occupational exposures associated with the Acheson process were mainly based on epidemiological studies, whereas the assessment of the whiskers--in the absence of epidemiological--was based on carcinogenicity bioassays and consideration of their physical properties. In view of the absence of epidemiological studies on carbon nanotubes and the limited information available from mechanistic data, the evaluations of single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes relied essentially on carcinogenicity bioassays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Wireless Community Networks is about getting people online using wireless network technology. The 802.11b standard (also known as WiFi) makes it possible to network towns, schools, neighborhoods, small business, and almost any kind of organization. All that's required is a willingness to cooperate and share resources. The first edition of this book helped thousands of people engage in community networking activities. At the time, it was impossible to predict how quickly and thoroughly WiFi would penetrate the marketplace. Today, with WiFi-enabled computers almost as common as Ethernet, it makes even more sense to take the next step and network your community using nothing but freely available radio spectrum. This book has showed many people how to make their network available, even from the park bench, how to extend high-speed Internet access into the many areas not served by DSL and cable providers, and how to build working communities and a shared though intangible network. All that's required to create an access point for high-speed Internet connection is a gateway or base station. Once that is set up, any computer with a wireless card can log onto the network and share its resources. Rob Flickenger built such a network in northern California, and continues to participate in network-building efforts. His nuts-and-bolts guide covers: Selecting the appropriate equipment Finding antenna sites, and building and installing antennas Protecting your network from inappropriate access New network monitoring tools and techniques (new) Regulations affecting wireless deployment (new) IP network administration, including DNS and IP Tunneling (new) His expertise, as well as his sense of humor and enthusiasm for the topic, makes Building Wireless Community Networks a very useful and readable book for anyone interested in wireless connectivity.
