Book excerpt: In a busy bee hive near a colorful meadow there lived a little honey bee named Mia. Mia woke one morning still feeling tired; after all, the hive is a very busy-and a very loud-place. She yawned, and stretched, and wished she could climb back into her warm, honeycomb bed. But nectar bees don't sleep in; they have nectar to collect after all! So Mia flew past the lush lavender, over the wildflowers and through the tall prairie grass that danced in the wind. She landed on some bright orange flowers for just a short rest . . . and closed her eyes . . . Soon Mia was not alone. Who joined the little honey bee for a little summer's nap in her orange flower bed? Find out in The Sleepy Honey Bee, a wonderfully colorful read for ages 6 and up. Complete with a short lesson on the Earth's bee population and how we can help them.
Book Synopsis 50 Sunflowers to Knit, Crochet & Felt by : Kristin Nicholas
Download or read book 50 Sunflowers to Knit, Crochet & Felt written by Kristin Nicholas and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunflowers are bold and bright flowers that have inspired painters and designers for years. Master knitter and designer Kristin Nicholas grows her own field of colorful sunflowers and now brings the iconic sunflower to fiber life using knitting, crochet, felting, and embroidery. Included are designs for over thirty different sunflower blooms and buds in a variety of sizes, plus eight different leaf and vine designs, and a host of critters who live in a sunflower field—from birds and honeybees, to butterflies and caterpillars—a total of fifty items. Laid out like the previous books in the series, the book includes all the useful information you need for making the flowers—which needles, crochet hooks, embroidery needles, and types of yarns to use, plus a special explanation of how to choose yarn that felts well. In the "How to Work with Color" section, photographs of actual sunflowers are translated into stitched samples that give the reader visual cues on how to combine colors in their crafting. Organized into knitted and crocheted items, with additional instructions incorporated for felting, the "How-To" section includes full step-by-step pattern instructions and charts where appropriate. The last part of the book features over fifteen projects for using the sunflowers in many and varied ways, from embellishing mittens, to decorating a grapevine wreath to a felted potholder, to making a child's toy, and more!

Book Synopsis My Life As a Honey Bee by : Joyce Wagner
Download or read book My Life As a Honey Bee written by Joyce Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The female honey bee speaks to us about life in the honeycomb. It is highly readable and can be enjoyed by young adult and adult readers. It is based on scientific fact and is an exhaustive fount of information. In no more than 83 pages the author covers all aspects of what it's like to be a female honey bee: when and from whom bees originated, their social hierarchy, how they gather pollen and make honey, their diseases, etc. The book even touches on research done by the United States government at their laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, as well as universities to determine if female honey bees can be used in place of "sniffer" dogs. Although it is based on scientific facts and is portrayed with a unique viewpoint, it generates interest in honey bees and appreciation for their value in nature and economic systems. Despite its brevity, the book is still an in-depth and informative resource with a light-hearted humorous twist. The story is told by a volunteer with the Museum of Natural Science (Houston, TX) who began studying honey bees at the Museum and became enchanted with them. After taking copious notes, the author realized she had written a book!
