Book Synopsis The Wind That Lays Waste by : Selva Almada
Download or read book The Wind That Lays Waste written by Selva Almada and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A taut, lyrical portrait of four people thrown together on a single day in rural Argentina The Wind That Lays Waste begins in the great pause before a storm. Reverend Pearson is evangelizing across the Argentinian countryside with Leni, his teenage daughter, when their car breaks down. This act of God or fate leads them to the workshop and home of an aging mechanic called Gringo Brauer and a young boy named Tapioca. As a long day passes, curiosity and intrigue transform into an unexpected intimacy between four people: one man who believes deeply in God, morality, and his own righteousness, and another whose life experiences have only entrenched his moral relativism and mild apathy; a quietly earnest and idealistic mechanic’s assistant, and a restless, skeptical preacher’s daughter. As tensions between these characters ebb and flow, beliefs are questioned and allegiances are tested, until finally the growing storm breaks over the plains. Selva Almada’s exquisitely crafted debut, with its limpid and confident prose, is profound and poetic, a tactile experience of the mountain, the sun, the squat trees, the broken cars, the sweat-stained shirts, and the destroyed lives. The Wind That Lays Waste is a philosophical, beautiful, and powerfully distinctive novel that marks the arrival in English of an author whose talent and poise are undeniable.
Book Synopsis The Old French Lays of Ignaure, Oiselet and Amours by : Glyn Sheridan Burgess
Download or read book The Old French Lays of Ignaure, Oiselet and Amours written by Glyn Sheridan Burgess and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New editions, with translations and introductions. The three narrative lays presented here form a sequel to the authors' French Arthurian Literature IV: Eleven Old French Narrative Lays, published in 2007. No new edition of Ignaure has appeared since 1938 and in the meantime this poem has generated a considerable amount of critical comment, especially as it provides the first full-length example in medieval European literature of the theme of the "Eaten Heart". Oiselet recounts abird's use of three truths as a means of escaping from the clutches of an uncultivated vilain. In the extant manuscripts these truths occur in two different orders, both of which are provided in the present edition. Amours, which follows the progress of a love affair between a nobleman and his beloved, has not been edited since 1878. All three poems challenge our understanding of the term "lay", especially if we regard the lays of Marie de France as defining the principal features of this genre. GLYN S. BURGESS is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Liverpool; LESLIE C. BROOK is Honorary Senior Research Fellow in French at the University of Birmingham.

Book excerpt: The title, Layers, suggests that a complexity exists in human nature. Therapists often refer to the therapy process as "peeling the onion". Although we may establish a sense of someone or form a first impression of them, the truth is that people are complicated and it requires time, numerous observations, and a variety of interactions to begin to grasp the "who" of who they are. Deep level understanding must unfold like a rose. You can not rush that natural process, either. Having said this, do not be shocked when someone you think you know fully, someone who you consider to be quite predictable, shows you some aspect of them selves that changes everything. It happens. So why risk entering and maintaining relationships at all? The answer is basic, really. We were not each given our own little island. We connect, bond, and care for one another because it as important as breathing. We forgive much in love, yet some things are intolerable, unacceptable, and yes, unforgivable, such as Abuse. Jen's story is a classic tale of the process of peeling that onion, leading to the core, and the discovery of a sickness so great, that the only response possible was to escape. An intelligent woman, a professional therapist, herself, was still conned, as she could only see the "outer" layers for far too long. The "how and the why" are explored in depth; the recognition and awareness revealed; and the strategies and skills to survive are explained, in a common sense manner. Self-care techniques; the Boundary setting process; and Assertive communication skills are offered to the reader, both in Jen's story and in the educational component of the text. Let the honesty, humor, and compassion guide you through the process toward understanding. Remember Who you are!

Book excerpt: Dallas Lore Sharp (1870–1929) was an American author, university professor, and librarian, best remembered for his magazine articles and books about native birds and small mammals. "We have had a series of long, heavy rains," he begins The Lay of the Land, "and water is standing over the swampy meadow. It is a dreary stretch, this wet, sedgy land in the cold twilight, drearier than any part of the woods or the upland pastures. They are empty, but the meadow is flat and wet, naked and all unsheltered. And a November night is falling. The darkness deepens. A raw wind is rising. At nine o’clock the moon swings round and full to the crest of the ridge, and pours softly over. I button the heavy ulster close, and in my rubber boots go down to the river and follow it out to the middle of the meadow, where it meets the main ditch at the sharp turn toward the swamp. Here at the bend, behind a clump of black alders, I sit quietly down and wait. I am not mad, nor melancholy; I am not after copy. Nothing is the matter with me. I have come out to the bend to watch the muskrats building, for that small mound up the ditch is not an old haycock, but a half-finished muskrat house." This classic contains the following chapters: I. The Muskrats Are Building II. Christmas in the Wood III. A Cure for Winter IV. The Nature Student V. Chickadee VI. The Missing Tooth VII. The Sign of the Shad-Bush VIII. The Nature Movement IX. June X. A Broken Father XI. High Noon XII. The Palace in the Pig-Pen XIII. An Account with Nature XIV. The Buzzard of the Bear Swamp XV. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current burial practices in the West fail to confront us with the reality of death and make it harder to grieve properly. Burreson and Hoeltke argue that natural burial offers a more accurate picture of Christian hope and resurrection. This immensely practical guide is also an application of the hope of the resurrection to those grieving.
